The video has already been pulled (I guess due to traffic), but I'm getting pretty good speeds from hxxp://www.cs.wisc.edu/~coates/video/. There seemed to be plenty of mirros available, here
"The typical case involves a lot of outgoing connections on port 25 -- you can't really block this as well unless the user in question uses nothing but webmail."
Eh? port 25 is for SMTP servers, a user has no need for this port unless they are running their own mail server. Checking your mail is done through POP3 and IMAP on ports 110 and 143, respectively. My ISP (Cox Cable) blocks port 25 on all non business level service, which pisses me off since I'd like to run my own server, but I'm sure it does help keep the spamming to a minimum. At any rate I can check my email just fine over POP3, IMAP, or Webmail.
wow you dont enven bother to RTFSummary, this is a ban on MUNICIPAL wireless, not an all out ban on companes or individuals providing waireless. So unless your coffee shop is run by the city or state, this wont affect you as a wifi host one iota.
Well with MAC address spoofing being as easy as it is, that would make it trivial to circumvent by constantly changing MAC addresses, and it also opens up a new avenue of DoS by spoofing your victims machine's mac address and getting them blocked.
I used to be an avid America's Army player, until I got so sick of all of the bugs. Half of the weapons dont work and aren't used in any maps, like the shotgun and fists.. which have been bugged for years. It also runs like absolute crap. I can play Doom 3 and HL2 both at 1024x768 with moderate settings and they play smoothly. With all the settings turned down in AA, I still get lag on any map more compliacted than Bridge Crossing. Sometimes it would bug causing your teammates to look like OpFor. I once hit a guy in the chest with a 203 round, it exploded, and didn't do a single bit of damage. This game is written like crap, and any time you complain to the community about it, you get 1000's foreigners crying "Quit bitching! It's FREE!". Well no sir it is most certainly not free to us Americans who's tax dollars were used in its creation. I have no problem with them making a game for recruitement but I would expect it to at least be commercial quality, i have seen open source projects done better than that game. I have since quit AA completely, and play Counter Strike Source exclusivly, but if Ubisoft can make this game, and make it right, I very well might switch back. Under current circumstances however, I find it to be unplayable.
No barcode printer necessary. A regular run of the mill printer will print barcodes just fine. I did this a few years ago when I was archiving my media collection, some of the items didn't have a UPC printed on the case or media so I had to print my own. If I was able to print with an old canon bubbljet and read with a cheap (free actually) CueCat then I'm sure they could do the same.
"some software which are publicly available for a few hundred dollars"
There are several barcode generators available online for free. There is even a database of UPC's available here, which is fairly extensive, I tried picking random things with barcodes up once, and it recognized almost all of them.
"The hard part is finding a checker who won't notice. I can't figure out that one."
If you've been to a walmart recently you've probably notice they now have self check out lines, you just scan your items, it calcualtes your charge and you can pay with cash or credit. I can see very easily how you could get away with it.
I found it interesting that I could actually read barcodes directly off my screen, though it often took a few swipes. But it goes to show that barcode readers aren't really that finicky about reading barcodes.
Uhm, no that would make you a cowardly murderer. Toerrorists dont kill civilians just because they're an easier target than military, they kill them to send a message of terror, "Yes, we will kill you too, you will never be safe. We will bring the war to your doorstep." The point being to terrorize the offending nations people. If they could as effectively get this message out by killing military personnel they would certainly do it.
Of course, your example makes the US one of the most notorious terrorist nations, we dropped atomic bombs on cities chock full of citizens. We weren't even outnumbered.
Targetting of civilians does not make you a terrorist. Using terror as a tactic for furthering your cause makes you a terrorist.
"Of course, Kevin was actually a pretty different character but the authorities didn't really have any way of verifying that this was the case."
Nor do they have any way of varifying that my one phone call wont do the exact same, nor yours, nor anyone elses. We have the presumption of innocence in this country, and it's one of those troublesome rights given to us by our misguided founders. Of course, I'd like to make a phone call in that same situation, I'm sure you would too, but it's ok to forget about due process if it's someone else, right? I dont care if they thought the guy was Hitler reincarnate, he was an american citizen and deserved the same fair treatment as you or I.
The image is a bit blurry and usually darker than those expensive multimedia projectors. But the bulbs are cheaper to replace, and it's suitable for watching movies with your friends on walls and such. I'd recommend forgoing the overhead lamp and getting yourself a much more high powered light source, and a top quality fresnel lense, it will still probably be cheaper than the overhead projector, and having a brighter light source means a bigger or brighter picture. Couple one of these with a low powered am/fm transmitter and you're ready to host a Guerilla Drive in
Is anyone else disturbed by the fact that this came out over a year after it's initial release date? It makes one wonder what was so wrong with the source that they had to spend a year fixing it just because someone else was able to look at it.
Becuase if it became the new hotness, 1000's of fanboys and fangirls would have "wasted" all that money on their mp3 player, and would have to go out and buy a new one so people will still think they are cool. I think about %5 of the ipod user base likes the ipod because of it's functionality, the other %95 use it as a status symbol, and will make any excuse to discount competitors as being subpar.
I used to have an iPod, I liked it alot, and it served me well up until the point my brother dropped it out of a boat. I upgraded to a Rio Karma and I like it much better. It was cheaper and does the job just as well as the ipod. This is just my personal opinion, but at least it's an informed opinion.
I'm thinking you're a troll, but what the hell, I'll bite.
What are you talking about? Redhat, Suse, Gentoo, FreeBSD, and NetBSD all have SPARC distros, and those are just the ones I can name off the top of my head. I have a SPARC20 running a gentoo live cd as we speak, serving as basically a web terminal. More distros have PPC compatability beacyse PPC is a more popular architecture, just like x86 has more available distros than PPC.
And how exactly would having BSD for any particular arch make Linux redundant or vice versa? They are two completely different operating systems.
Perhaps you are unaware, but PPC hardware did in fact exist before OS X, and most of that pre-existing hardware will not run OS X. Given Linux vs. OS 9, I'd certainly choose Linux. Of course, I'd probably choose Linux regardless, as I'm not a huge fan of OS X, but to each his own.
I've tried GAMBAS (Gambas Almost Means Basic) a few times in the past and while it had potential, it was far from "production quality". I'm glad to see that development is active and I plan on giving it another shot. I'm not really a fan of Visual Basic myself, but I know a ton of VB programmers who won't make the switch simply because there isn't an viable equivalent. I think projects like this are especially important, because I beleive if you can get the developer market, the user market will follow the application trail on over. Anyways, congrats to the gambas development team.
Who modded this moronic crap up as insightful? In case you were unaware, all of the technology that comes from Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, etc. is artificially inflated by import taxes, in order to keep American companies from having to compete. So the corporations get financial protection from cheap labor, while the people do not. You very well can be against outsourcing and for free trade, they are not mutually inclusive, and the fact that you think they are goes to show how little you understand about economics. If you drop the import taxes, then I might be able to afford to work as cheap as an outsourced foreigner, however there is an imbalance due to import taxes.
"There is no difference between importing computer hardware and importing software services (outsourcing) except in the particular sector affected."
This is just stupid. The difference b/w importing hardware and importing software services is that hardware is taxed, software services are not. Perhaps the ranters have something to complain about when their government allows for protection of the corportations but not protection of the people. It is not free trade until there are no import taxes, so start with your "outsourcing is good" crap there.
What I think is retarded is people who can't seem to read the post. It says it's order of magnitudes faster than the FTTP (Fiber to the premises) that Verizon is rolling out, which they claim will carry up to 30Mbps, though they didn't release prices for anything above 15mbps. It did not compare it directly to the transfer rates of fiber or any other data line. Try a little bit of critical thinking before you post next time. They are talking about service levels, not maximum transfer rates for any one type of connection. And it quite possible could carry more bandwidth, since you can't saturate wireless connections like you can with physical lines. If i have 10 people on a 100Mb cat5 run, they can each get 10 mbps. If I have 30 people on a 54mbps wireless connection they can all get 54mpbs.
SELinux is not audited, it simply has enhanced permission controls. It even states on the home page that they make no attempt to audit code for bugs, but rather to show how priveledge seperation can increase security, even limiting the power of the root user. I know you didn't exactly say that SELinux was audited, but just calryifying that up for anyone who might misconstrue your post.
You can install gentoo from ANY linux distribution. Knoppix, Gentoo Live-CD's, debian floppies, network boot, pre existin Yoper installation, it really doesn't matter. To me this is one of the greatest things about Gentoo.
I personally use Knoppix to install Gentoo, so that I have a full desktop environment to play around in while compiling. That way I can get my Gentoo system fully installed with all the big compiles (X, KDE or Gnome libraries, Oo.org, mozilla). This pretty much negates the trolls whinings about not having a useable system while you're compiling. I certainly use my system more during a gentoo install than I would during a Fedora, Mandrake, or $BINARY_DISTRO install. The debian netboot floppies are great too, especially for laptops, since they come complete with pcmcia support.

There is a filter for this kind of crap, it's called moderation. If you don't want to see it, raise your threshhold.

How do I mod an entire section as flamebait?
:)
And I can see all the foriegners complaining that this is too U.S. centric
And the only difference between them and you is that they like anime.
I am curious as to why anyone would think having an infinite supply of energy could be anything but a good thing. Please explain.
