  1. THIS HAS GOT TO STOP!! on Why IE Is So Fast ... Sometimes · · Score: 1

Sorry about the all caps, but this is really starting to get ridiculous. Sure, it's very funny for all of us reading to know that we can bring a site to its knees. But, this persistent slashdotting has got to come to an end! Would it really be that had for Slashdot to mirror the submitted site in cases where the editors know that it is going to get slaughtered?

Don't say that they would have to ask for permission. They have no qualms with devastating a site, so why should they worry about the repurcussions of mirroring the site?

There is an op-ed over at Kuroshin that deals with this subject.

Come on people, can't we try and be a little bit more responsible?

I would think that if something like this were to happen, then some new, awe-inspiring monument could be built. However, It seems to me that there has been a dearth in people eligible for immortalization in a mountain face (for example) for quite a while now.

Being a resident of Montreal, I've encountered these folks numerous times as they try and sell their *ahem* books to pedestrians outside of downtown malls.

One day, just for the hell of it, I decided to try and speak with one of the "believers." I'm a molecular biologist, so I have an idea of what they are trying to do, but I approached it from a simplistic view and confronted the pair with some facts. Within a minute they were trying to chase me away, no doubt because I was scaring off the cattle.

It goes without saying that these folks--at least at the recruiter level--have absolutely no idea of what they are purporting to have done. The two I spoke two acted exactly like brain-washed zombies. Needless to say, the whole endeavour was an exercise in futility.

I completely agree with you, but unfortunately that is the catch 22 that is required to get new users right now. You average Mary Jane Rottencrotch (thanks, Stanley) is too scared to try something other than Windows, so in order to get her attention, GUI developers try their best to provide a Linux version of Windows.

You mentioned OpenOffice. I was totally shocked when I first saw screenshots of it and saw how closely it visually mimiced Office. The thing is, as has been stated here a thousand times, people don't want to learn a new interface. So, what choice to GUI designers have?

Personally I like Enlightenment. It's very clean, no clutter, and reasonably easy to manage once you get into it. Anyone could use it if they just took the time to figure it out, but most people just don't want to.

It seems to me that the ultimate goal of a lot of developers is merely to provide a new backend to Windows. I understand why they are doing it, but I still think that it's pretty sad.

I have to agree. I used to have a Toshiba 1640 cdt, which was an okay laptop, but was hell on the shoulders. Two months ago I got a Fujitsu P-2110, and since then, I haven't gone anywhere without this little beauty.

It may cost quite a bit ($1600), and the specs aren't that fantastic (this is not a desktop replacement), but for anyone who needs/wants to have a computer with them all the time, this thing rocks. Battery life is a big issue with laptops, and if you cough up the extra cash for the long-life battery and the modular battery, you could get about 12 hours out of it.

Another aspect that I really like is that the screen has a native resolution of 1280X768, which makes it just about perfect for watching DVDs in widescreen. And since the DVD drive is an internal, modular drive, and it doesn't weigh very much, you'll be watching lots of movies on the go.

And for the Linux fiends, the P series works well. I've had Slackware 8.1 running for a couple months now, and everything works pretty well.

Check out the P-series forums for a lot more info.

I don't think that you can make that conclusion, at least not in a general sense. I know a lot of people who have emotional issues who then gravitated towards the activities like videogames or D&D. These people had social skills that are sorely lacking, and thus they tend to rather spend their time doing something that they enjoy. I agree with you that the time is better spent trying to work through their issues, but how many people do that? I see videogames as an avenue--specifically for the people that I am referring to--to just get away from the struggle that is associating with other human beings.

As for you last statement, it seems to me that any activity can be done to excess, so faulting games is hardly fair. How many people reading Slashdot are where they are today because they obsessed about their chosen subject instead of dealing with life? I would wager that there are quite a few.

There is no universally-accepted definition for a hacker, which leads to the media calling anyone that knows what TCP/IP is a hacker. You just said, "You mean Cracker.", but there are a lot of hackers that don't like this term either.

I think that the most important step is making sure we can define the point where someone crosses from hacker to criminal. The rest of the monikers are then basically superfluous.

Now, I don't mean "Are you making more money now?" That much is a foregone conclusion. I mean, "Are you fundamentally a happier person after pushing yourself to the limit?"

There is way more to life than just money. If this is really what you want to do, and you are happy while doing it, cool. But we're only on this planet for a little while, and afterwards, that's it. The Universe carries on as you lie in the ground as bacterial fodder. Is it really worth skipping time with your SO and friends, or not reading a book you wanted to read or seeing a movie you wanted to see, or just not being able to laze about and think?

These all sound like really trivial things, but do you really want to be lying on your death-bed and think to yourself, "Shit man, I made a ton of dough." Maybe I'm just being naive, but I definitely don't want to end up like that.
