Netware was incredibly stable but when it came to setup and configuration it was overly complicated. Windows took over the market not because it was a better product, but because it was more accessible. They concentrated too much on things people, who were casually trying to get involved with it, did not want to learn. MS basically proved that you don't need to be a genuis to set-up file and print sharing which is what Netware was geared for.

In many area's they were ahead of their time(Directory Services in 1994 is a great example), but if they had paid a little more attention to how people would like to work with computers instead of making it act like a mainframe they would not have been whipped so thoroughly in the market.

Why? Some people need the money and no longer play so for $100 you can have a complete set, ready to play instead of going to the store, buying miniatures, paint, paint brushes, prime, sealant and fake grass and about 100 hours of personal time to get your miniatures "ready" by painting them.

Uhm, your math is slightly off as well as your statement. It is 1 in 25 people who have reported HAD the disease that have died. My your numbers 250,000 people would be dead in Hong Kong. Also the numbers don't include people who get infected but DO NOT GET SICK! Noone really knows how many people are carrying the disease but are not affected by it. You have have 100,000 who are carriers but have no symptoms! You don't think that people who are around other people with the flu did not get any germs do you? They just were not affected at all.

This is all along the same path of the West Nile virus, the previous PLAGUE that was roving through the US. It was little worse than the common cold and killed people who were older and already had health problems. It did not stop local government from scare-mongering, asking for millions so that they could spray every inch of their counties with pesticide even though noone in their district had even contracted the disease.

It is like that Simpsons episode where a bear gets spotted in town. So they organized dedicated Bear Patrols to keep the town safe from roving bears.

  10. Questions on When Should a Consultant Question Decisions? · · Score: 1

The company I work for hired a consultant to help resolve issues that they were having with a piece of software. I went and talked with her about the problem, off to the side. I asked her straight up, is the problem with the software or with the person who was in charge of the software, and said it was the person. I asked, "are you going to say anything?" She said "no because noone wants to here that!" So after shelling out 40K for this contractor, she was going to tip-toe around the real problem for why she was there, so that managment would not have to hear that someone made a dumb decision in who they had hired.

So even when a consultant/contractor is paid for an opinion, there is a good chance that are not going to tell the whole truth because they don't want to cut themselves off from potential business.

Companies that are too sensitive to take criticism are not going to be doing any real business with consultants anyways. They are looking for an opinion that matches the answer that they have come up with. Customers who will listen to your opinion without getting angry about it are more likely to come back. Someone who can respect honesty will value your opinion more so than someone who is just looking for you to say "everything is just peachy the way things are!"

There's no reason to believe they're about to "fail".

The reason I said that they are failing is that if you look at their Balance Sheet they are negative 6 Billion Dollar's in Retained Earnings. The rule is that you cannot pay out any dividends UNTIL R/E are positive and for no more than they have R/E. Now the income that they are generating every year is 200 million. Assuming that everything else is constant it would take 30 years before any stock holders would see a dime!

Take the fact that they cannot pay out money to investor's and that it is getting easier to open your own radio station(not REAL easy, but viable). There is little reason to believe that Clear Channel can be a dominate company. A good example, take a look at the railroads. AmTrak has to go and beg for money from congress every year just to stay afloat and they are not making any money. I doubt that the media business would get the sam subsidies that a fixed asset company like AmTrak would.

So basically, yeah CC is buying up everything but they are taking up alot of loans to do it, and it does not look realistic for investors that they are going to get their return on their money back in their life time. Even a bond would pay more than CC would. So CC buys everything, but cannot make any money. Goes broke, has to sell off it's assets on the cheap, and noone can afford to buy it all. Free market wins again! I hope! :)

I got a very bland letter stating that they already had a procedure for approving books which obiviously had nothing to do with an open-license book. I moved back in with my parents because I can no longer afford rent

As I was reading this, I was wondering, is this really such a bad thing? It is nice to go out and live on your own, but does EVERYONE need to own a house, and have a new car all the time? My parents have THREE cars, they don't even go anywhere! Is everyone owning their own home a "keeping up with the Jone's" like attitude? I think that it is.

Lots of countries have several generations of family living together, or at least near each other. In the US, it is not uncommon to have your family living on the other side of the continent, with siblings being little closer. If I moved back in the with my parents(I am 31, BTW), I could get along with them. I really don't have alot of stuff that I need that takes up space. I do that, I could save about $8,000 a year in rent, probalbly a couple thousand from phone, electric, and food. I figure that with everything I could save $12,000 a year.

That being said, maybe we are artificially inflating what we need in the way of salary. Instead of taking advantage of the utility of sharing with our family, we are competing with them. Everyone has got to have their own car, their own house, their own phone. A 7.50/hour job might be enough if we tried sharing what we have instead of trying the same things as everyone else.

    Just something to think about.
