Like Russia and China, the United States has extensive natural resources (energy included), it is just cheaper for us to import them from other countries. Now, I'm not advocating WWIII, or saying we [Americans] have nothing to worry about if WWIII breaks out, BUT if a major war does occur, I would expect the United States to convert to a controlled economy, ala WWII, and you'd see domestic production skyrocket in relatively short order.

Since Vista is generally a consumer-level or workstation operating system, I can't imagine most users would care. Now, if this was in Windows 2003, then I'd say Microsoft has some REAL problems... (I have no idea whether it is or not).

Like it or not, Vista is a consumer operationg system designed for... consumers! Most people have wireless networks and are more likely to notice their music skipping than slower file transfers between computers (because we know in the US at least, broadband is pitiful). Personally, I'm impressed they put THAT much thought into it in the first place (and I hope instead of issuing a "fix", they enable some sort of option that allows us to set the limit/disable it completely).

It's unfortunate the parent felt they needed to buy a game console because gaming companies are forcing DRM on their customers, but it's not at all hypocritical, imho.

OEM versions of Windows don't get Microsoft support, they get the OEM's.

Yes... but this won't help Microsoft if people buy Vista Basic and then try to run it in a virtualization environment. I'm almost positive Apple is not going to start selling Vista OEM, why would they? Their entire marketing strategy up until now has been "We're better than IBM + Microsoft" kit. Now that they're IBM Compatible (depreciated, I know) their only hook is that they don't run Windows. This actually does mesh well with the people buying Apple computers. Every Mac user I know, when I ask if they are going to run Vista ask me "Why would I?" I think it would be a particularly hard sell for Apple to include it with every machine, even if it was "seamless".

At the end of the day, Microsoft is using their power to price-differentiate by use. Like it or not, that's their right. If you don't like it, switch to Linux. If you can't, pay up; there's no such thing as a free lunch.

I'm not so sure about that. Yes, people are lazy, but switching to a different ISP is more of a hassle than running a virus/malware scanner; even if you're really computer-unsavvy, you'll probably have a child, sibling, cousin or friend who knows a bit more about computers and can do it for you.

Five years ago, I would have agreed with you. The problem is, (some) of those same kids who were fixing computers a few years ago have graduated to writing the malware they used to remove. I am gainfully employed fixing computers and I can certainly say running a virus/malware scanner AFTER the computer is already infected almost never works except for the weakest of bugs. The malware out today often takes control of the entire computer, infecting or replacing system of application files (explorer.exe, notepad.exe).

People have often asked me what Antivirus program to use to clean up their computer, and the best analogy I can come up with is this: Using antivirus software to remove a virus is akin to using a condom to cure an STD. IT's already too late.

What really needs to be done is consumer education, and the will to go after the people who profit from these botnets, legally. Once the profit motivation is gone, so will the 'nets.

If you've ever read Marx, he was pretty much worried about the same thing, and really they're both pretty baseless. Basically what happens is this. As technology improves, a society's PPF will shift outward, meaning we can make more STUFF. What you're worrying about could only happen if we maintained the same output.

This concept be understood quite intuitively by imagining the GDP of the entire world in the 1600s. As technology improved (think cotton gin), many people were afraid these machines would take their jobs, and in the short-term they did. As time went on, more jobs were created, as productivity rose. If machines could truly "take our jobs" we'd all be destitute now. Instead, we enjoy 10,000x pairs of clothing instead of having one we keep for 20 years... (Exaggeration, but you get the point). As technology improves, worldwide production increases, and the rate of employment remains unchanged (actually it has improved).
