You know, I'd lay odds that this system will probably only be used on shopping carts in more expencive grocery stores that use baggers (like Hagen's) and in places where the chances of theft are lower (like the 'burbs).
It isn't just microsoft. I remember back in the days of the PSX that Sony was very much against Modding. Nintendo didn't care as much at the time because it's much more difficult to make a duplicate cartridge.
You forgot that according to Fallwell, god also hates: Catholics, Mormons, Gamers, Wiccans, Goths (Visi, Ostro, or otherwise), Rock Music, anyone who's friends with any of the aboce...
Say... I'm a Catholic Gamer that listens to Rock Music who's friends with Mormans, Wiccans, and Goths and has a sister who's a Catholic Gamer that listens to Rock Music who's a Harry Potter Fan. Does this mean I'm getting my own layer of hell?
I recently sat down to back up some of my audio casette and record (as in vinyl) collection. I sucessfully downloaded good copies of all save 2 tracks of AC/DC's Live album. I found the other two, but I didn't like those songs that much.
On the other side of the coin, I was rarely able to find any of the tracks on Horslips' "Book of Invasions" or "Man Who Built America" albums. I might have been able to find them on Napster, but I didn't have my laptop then, so I couldn't take advantage of my high school's T1 line to download the Mp3s really fast. Ah well. C'est la vie.
Alternatively, they decided to listen to him for the first time and guess where it got them...
Actually, being a classic rock man myself, I had never listened to that much Metallica. After hearing about the suit, I was on the fence. However, I truly realized how much they f'd up after I saw the Behind The Music on them. Amazing how little it takes to lose it all...
Actually, you can try before you buy. It's called a library. Many of them carry CD's. And best of all, if you check out a CD and you only like a couple of songs on it, you can rip them. And if you like all of the songs and feel like supporting the artist, then buy the album. Actually, at my closest store that sells CDs (Fry's Electronics) the most expensive single cd (as opposed to a double album) I saw cost $15. I only saw one album that cost $20 and that was a two-CD set.
They also have turntables too (not high-end DJ stuff but I'm digressing).
Switch to Eudora. It's not OE, and it's pretty user friendly. And you can get a free version (you just have to put up with very small advertisments in the lower left hand corner of the window).
Well, not to pick nits, but technically, that's not whistleblowing.
It'd be whistleblowing if the network administrator at the base had told higher ups in the federal government about it, and possibly gotten fired.
It's not whistleblowing if an outside, non-governmental agency, hacks the system and sees how far they can go, goes and tells the press that they've done it and what they were able to find, and then gets the book thrown at them by the government.
They could have handled this a lot better. They should have offered their services as an independant contracter to the federal government, and, *if* they were hired, done the hack. However, they would have been *paid* to do the hack, and given permission to do the hack. That way they would not be stepping on anyone's toes.
Region Coding? It's already happened. Try to play a Japanese Playstation (PS1, not PS2) game on an un-modded US Playstation. It's won't work.
If you're talking averting the equivalent of Region Coding, once again, it's already happened, in the form of Mod Chips. However, if memory serves, they are illegal to buy, sell, or install in the United States (you can own them though, and if you installed one before they were made illegal, you're safe). Apparently, the reason Sony wanted Mod Chips made illegal, was they also allowed you to play pirated games, or something like that. I might have gotten parts of this wrong. If I did, please let me know.
This is different. It's very hard to stop being fat. It may be a little difficult to stop being smelly. It is very, very easy to stop talking on one's cell phone in the theater.
Besides, many theatres and cineplexes say explicitly, "Turn off your cell phones and other electronic devices". Does this mean it'll happen? No.
Yes, this is not dangerous. But no one said you had the right to ruin my (and everyone else's) enjoyment of a movie or play or opera or whatever by talking on your cell phone during it.
Well, just because a game is outdated, doesn't mean it stinks. Besides, of the FPSs for Linux that I know about, they're good ones (Quake III, Tribes II). They just need to port Unreal Tournament & Counterstrike to Linux and we'll have the Holy, um, Quadity(?) on Linux, and you'll be able to play those games without needing to run WINE.
DS9 they might do. I don't see them doing a Voyager movie at all (thank god), as all the loose ends were tied up. There are a couple loose ends for DS9 though, and many of the fans consider it to be the best of the five series. I doubt they'll make a Enterprise series until they end the series (which hopefully won't be for several years).

Oh, Microsoft knows that Open Source has the potential to be a threat to them. It just hasn't gotten to a level where they can bring their army of lawyers against it. And even then, I don't think they'd be successful. After all, Open Source would, I suppose, be more difficult to destroy than p2p. p2p was like a Hydra (this may be a poor analogy), cut of one head (Napster) and two more (KaZaA, Gnutella) spring up.
The difference is that Open Source has many, many heads to begin with. Microsoft and it's ilk could sue from now till doomsday and not make much of a dent.
Um, where is this? In Oregon (specifically in the West Linn/Wilsonville School District), not only is "Grapes of Wrath" assigned reading in classes, but one of the running projects for students throughout the reading of the book is about religious allusions in the book.
Also, in sophmore year, during the myth unit, parts of the Old Testament are required reading.
Hey! Think about it through his shoes. He does the demo, he's unemployed. Unemployed=no money. This will also make things more difficult for him to get a job because if a potential employer checks back at HP and finds out why he was fired, he won't get hired.
Frankly, I don't believe in "selling out" except in certain circumstances. Metallica sold out. Bruce Perens didn't not. Bruce Perens made sure that he can still be a voice from inside the industry.
Which would you prefer? That he gives his expose and be cut off from all his sources and resources that allowed him to do his expose, or that he be able to continue to pass on information to we/.ers.
What would you do in his position, risking what he would have been risking. Also, he may also have a wife and kids. Would you be willing to risk a marrage just to spill the beans. You may be a legend on/. for standing up to the MPAA, but that may not mean jack shit to his wife.
Things are rarely black and white. There are almost always shades of grey.
I admit, I am skeptical about this. I'm not saying that the site linked to made this up, but perhaps they were leaked bogus information. Just because (as I stated in a previous message) I'm a little naive and sheltered doesn't mean that I'm not skeptical. And in cases like this, I'm skeptical.
However, *if* it's legit, then we're one step closer to the future according to William Gibson and R. Talsorian Games.
Um, excuse me, but it's not your right to endanger yourself and others on the roads. I admit, I may be a bit naive, I may be a bit sheltered, but I am certainly not as bitter and dissolusioned with society to say that it's my *right* to drive like a *moron*.
Frankly, perhaps this device will cut back on some of the idiocy I see on the roads. For example, not more than a week ago, I saw a person backing up the *on* ramp on I-205. And it's not that rare to see stuff of that degree of idiocy.
Frankly, from some of the opinion's I have seen expressed on/. I have gathered that either a larg e amount or people, or a small amount of people posting under the name of "Anonymous Cowards" have grown to dislike Capitalism, due to the corruption of Big Business. Now, the only way to check that is with laws. However, aformentioned people don't seem to like Big Government. They also seem disillusioned with democracy.
So what does that leave. Monarchy is out, we've moved beyond that, plus those are easily undermined in today's society. Communism is most definatly out. Last time that was tried on a large scale cause failed miserably with major loss of life (see the USSR and that which Stalin didn't watn you to know). That leaves Timocracy (see "Starship Troopers" (the novel, not the movie, for that system of goverment, though the book doesn't go into detail), Aristocracy (Society has moved beyond this one also). This just leaves Anarchy.
However, for starters, Anarchy tends to lean towards the economic system being capitalist. Also, it tends to have the consumers being screwed over and much disorder because only the strongest people can keep the unruly elements from making everyone else's lives hell. Eventually, people tend to follow the strongest/most charismatic because they get people to follow them, obey them, and so forth. This leads us back to (you guessed it) monarchy. Monarchy leads us to Aristocracy, which leads to either Democracy or Communism.
So, in short, what I'm trying to say is Anarchy sucks, you don't deserve to hurt other people because you think you rule the road, and quit biching about stuff that'll lower everyone else's insurance rates except yours because the insurance company will know how you tailgate, cut people off, and back up on-ramps.
Now we just need to install mandatory breathalizers in cars to that noone can drive drunk.
Here in Oregon, we have similar devices in the Tri-Met bus system. They were fairly recently used in an accident between a Tri-Met Bus and a Sedan. Initially, the driver of the bus said that the driver of the sedan was at fault. However, the device inside the bus, very similar to this one, but with a forward facing camera, showed that actually, the Bus Driver was at fault in the accident, and he was eventually fired.
The only logical reason I can think of is that they think that if the person is using "spam" in the addy, then they're a spammer. However, we're talking Microsoft here, and there isn't much logic there.
It's most likely that the companies that are doing the spamming are paying a small fee to Microsoft to keep people from taking those addresses, as they've figured out that the spambots ignores those addresses.
You know, I'd lay odds that this system will probably only be used on shopping carts in more expencive grocery stores that use baggers (like Hagen's) and in places where the chances of theft are lower (like the 'burbs).

This is the 3rd time I've read this post worded the exact same way as a reply to 3 different posts, therefore, it's Redundant.

Yeah. Also, McDonald's wasn't the first burger joint. The closest to that would be White Castle, if not some other chain.
5. Film it and put it on pay-per-view.

Activate the english subtitles. Every DVD worth buying has it.
