  1. Re:Sorry, but this is bunk on Most File Sharers Would Pay For Legal Downloads · · Score: 1

    Sorry but...

Amazon MP3 is not available in Canada. And those "East European sites" don't carry the music I listen to.

I would gladly pay for the content I download. I do pay for a good portion of it in the form of DVDs, Blu-rays and CDs. But I still justify downloading because I simply do not have the chance to pay for TV and downloadable movies and music in a reasonable way.

I doubt you will see these in High Schools or anything but in an airport I think it makes perfect sense.

  10. The same argument... on Revolution Horsepower Revealed · · Score: 3, Insightful

This is exactly the same story that came out when DS and PSP specs were announced. PSP is so much more powerful and DS is for kids, etc... But look at how well the DS is doing. Not that it is blowing away the competition but I don't think anyone expects the Revolution to "beat" 360/PS3. Nintendo just needs to recover from Gamecube's failure and grow it's user base. If Revolution is anything like the DS then I think they will do quite well.

The concept is great but a bunch of people saying "AJAX" a lot does not mean it should be hailed as being important.

  14. Re:Should We Fear? on SHA-0 Broken, MD5 Rumored Broken · · Score: 4, Interesting

Here is the significance of this story:

The proof that they have computed two values that have the same hash is significant because it proves that it is computationally feasible with today's computing resources to calculate a second different string or dataset that hashes to the same value as the original. It shows that a md5 hash can be "faked" or duplicated using current computing power. There is nothing significant about the values themselves presented in the story just that such values can now be theoretically found in a reasonable amount of time using available resources.

Why this is a bad thing:
Say I sign a program using md5. An attacker writes his own different program and appends some gibberish data in such a way that the two files are different but have the same md5 hash. There is now no way (using md5) to tell the two programs apart. (Of course the programs would have to be similar in other ways, size etc... for the spoof to work.) This same thing could be used to calculate new passwords for md5 hashes that are known to the attacker.

Why should we not panic: It took a long time to find the collision. Chances are a script kiddie wont be able calculate such hashes to crack into your site. But it show that banks or other highly confidential data stores should now look elsewhere for their hashing needs. (Which they probably already do).

Ultimately the consumers will make the choice. The problem being that consumers don't always make the best choices (VHS, Windoz, etc...).
I would expect that the winning format is fully compatible with all HDTV formats (1080i) and that players are backwards compatible with DVD.
Anything else would not be worth the upgrade.

I agree that the market for standard web design is highly saturated but there are some things that have helped me as a freelance web designer:

    1. Read a lot. Find out what is good and bad about the web. Use xhtml and avoid javascript and flash. Don't use frontpage (or dreamweaver)!
    2. Be a Pro. Take graphic design (or hire a designer). Make you web pages look professional and user-friendly.
    3. Become a web application programmer. Use PHP, sql, ASP, etc... and learn to write dynamic, remotely administered pages.
    4. Don't over charge. Every client is a walking talking ad. Leave them happy.
    5. Keep it simple. Don't get over your head and NEVER take a job with the intention of learning the required skills.

  22. Re:Bullet Time? on Movie Landmarks for CGI Effects? · · Score: 1

Here is the origin of Bullet Time:

Industrial clients examining buildings for structural flaws needed to see Paris from above. Parisian airspace, however, is tightly controlled; nonmilitary aircraft may fly over the city only on Bastille Day. A man named Lamorlette found that by morphing between two photographs, he could generate a 3-D model: digital photogrammetry. BUF first employed the technique to help director Michel Gondry create a music video for the Rolling Stones. Its radical camera moves - zipping through a room full of partygoers frozen in midmotion - caused a sensation in Europe. (BUF also used this method to make a Gap ad called "Khakis Swing" that was most Americans' first glimpse of the effect.) This effect was latter used in the Matrix and renamed 'Bullet Time'.

The creators of the Matrix special effects did not invent bullet time (as is implied on the making-of videos).

If, per chance, the site can't handle the load we should all just keep trying, because hey, that set painter guy might lose his job, and even though the execs aren't in trouble of losing theirs, this important and truthful information might change the whole industry in favor of the 'little guy'.
