No, it's the exact same issue with the Xbox that you described for the 360, except we don't know for 100% sure since the 360 isn't out yet. Xbox executables are signed with a private Microsoft key, is the executable isn't signed it won't run on a non-modded Xbox. If MS's private key was brute forced like the project that is currently trying to, then anyone could make a 3rd party game. This has happened with both the PS2 and Gamecube as the Action Replay/Gamesharks are unlicensed software that run on the console. The Xbox's auction replay is nothing more than a thumbdrive that lets you transfer saved games off a computer to your Xbox and vice versa, nothing special there.

Just download steam and you can download the games back on to your machine with no issue, or you could just backup the game files so you don't have to redownload everything.

With Steam the games you can access are limited to your account. Did you buy Darwina and you want to show it off to your friend? Just goto his house, fire up Steam and login with your account. You can download the game and play.

Yes there has been the rare occasion where Steam's login server has gone down and you can't play the games, but the times that has happened can be counted on 1 hand, and I personally never tried playing on one of those days. And for the record I preloaded Half-Life 2 through Steam, and purchased it through Steam. The day it came out I unlocked the game and played.

You should try Steam before you badmouth it. Since you own Half-Life 1, just download the Steam client and input your CD key. You'll be able to download HL to any computer you access. You'll also get access to Counter Strike 1.6, Opposing Force, and Blue Shift. Learn what your complaing about before you start complaining. The only real issue I have with Steam is that you can't transfer access to games to different accounts. This prevents you selling your old copy of the game, but then again I still have every game I ever purchased...

Hi, I guess I'm Tom. It's try that the media player functionality in Xbox Media Center is very good. I wouldn't call it making Xbox owners happy. The media center requires a modded Xbox, so not being offical you can't give Microsoft props for it.

A lot of the people who enjoyed the Xbox because of it basically being a PC and allowing easy homebrew to give us the mediaplayer and old school emulators aren't really looking forward to the 360. The architecture change makes it less port friendly (homebrew open source), and while the development environment is still going to be Visual Studio, Sony might have the edge. If Sony follows through with there plans to include a hard drive with the PS3, and perform a uncrippled, large scale launch of Linux. The PS3 could become the homebrew system of choice like the Dreamcast used to be. The two things holding back homebrew on the PS2 were that the Linux Kit was not very widely released and difficult and use, and the PS2s architure did not run computer software as easily as the Xbox. The 32MB vs. 64MB was also a huge factor as some of that 32MB was being taken up by the Linux Kernal in the first place. And then Nintendo is still a wild card with the Revolution, who knows what they have up their sleves.

Mortal Kombat on the other hand was one of the best video games to movie conversions. It's true the sequel sucked, but the first film had a very americanized hong kong kung fu movie feel to it. I'm sure being a fan of cheesy kung fu movies helped be enjoy the movie, but I really enjoyed how the movie didn't take itself too seriously. If you haven't seen it, it's a good retail and surprisingly low on the gore and violence that made the games so big. Everytime I've seen Live it looks like nothing more than a glorified chat room that acts as a gaming hub. The single sign-in for all games is a nice features but Sony and Nintendo will have something simiular. Past interviews with Nintendo have mentioned it, and you can be sure Sony is researching it.

Other than that Live is a pretty big let done when compared to what even the PS2's online mode in Japan can do. You can download movies, music, pictures, and short games/demos and watch, listen, view, or play them. I also already interfaces with Sony cameras for viewing pictures so nothing really big there.

And how does this make a bad choice for the PS3 and a good choice for the 360? First off in the coming 1-2 years not every place will be able to stream this HD video off the web as some places in the US are unable to get broadband. Secondly that still doesn't make MS sticking with a 9GB disk when you are trying to load up with HD content a good idea. So the disks become only good for storage, you'll get a lot of it on that one disk. Gamecube games suffered from only being 1.5GB in some games where the video and audio had to be more highly compressed, will the 360 suffer this fate because as Allard said "the compression isn't there yet".

I'm not trying to be a fan boy but I can't see Sony losing all the much more than MS. Sony as the manufacturing plants to make the parts themselves. As for talking to developers I spoke in person with a friend who is currently doing testing for Activision (I won't say his exact position because they are only a handful of them) but he's not a beta tester. His comments where than it doesn't look any better than a high-end PC. Look at the PC when the PC and Xbox came out. The graphics were far better than the consoles, sure now years later those old PCs can't keep up, but look at what the new ones can dish out compared to the consoles.

As for the cell being hard to program for? We heard the exact some complaint with the PS2. Boo fucking hoo. Take a wild guess which console had the most games released for it? That's right the PS2, developers will release on which ever console has the largest user base. And remember that the 1 year head start didn't help the dreamcast.

    >I'm going to buy both consoles, but I'm really not the average user... it will >be interesting to see how sony handles xbox's initial success this year.

I'll hold my judgement on the 360's initial success until after the smoke clears from the holiday season. As for consoles, I'll probably pickup a PS3 after the first price drop or a nice bundled game with a good coupon, and a Revolution right awa

Xbox Live only had one big feature that hasn't already been done else where, and that's the standardization of how the online interfaces will work. Previously you always had to create accounts for different games, and now you have one which will let you play under the same gamertag in every game.

The voice support that everyone is always ranting and raving about isn't really all that big of a feature. Sure you can now talk to each other rather than needing a keyboard on a computer, but does anyone really have anything useful to say? In some games it makes sense since you can coordinate with teammates (not that you'll get that more than 3% of the time in a pickup game). Also most of the people sound like whiney little 13 year olds spewing forth how they p0wnz that n00b, or what they want to do to your mother. I truely fear an MMORPG that will have full voice in it. Thankfully FFXI for the Xbox360 won't support voice chat as it runs on SquareEnix's servers and not MS's Live servers.

Now don't get me wrong as Voice chat can be highly useful in the right situation if used properly. I enjoy playing Guild Wars and using either Teamspeak or Ventrillo with it while doing PvP to coordinate attacks is great. However I don't want to jump into a random FPS and sit there listening to somebody practicing for their American Idol reject song where they get ripped apart.

In the end is Xbox Live awesome? Not really, it nice to have compared to things have been done before, but we've had things like MPlayer years ago that supported different games. And voice chat is good in certain cases. But my feeling is that Live isn't worth my $50/year as most of the online experiences have been far surpassed by games on the PC.
