  4. Other UK mags on What Magazines Do You Read? · · Score: 1

PC Pro and PC Plus have always been my favourite... and PC Format was good for the first couple of years, that was until they went for 'busty women on the front cover to boost sales to teenage boys' crap, plus the content becoming shit (then I nicknamed it PC Floormat). I've always prefered PC Zone for games (and would subscribe, if I could be arsed). Other mags I like are FHM and Attitude (yep I bat for both sides).

I hear you regarding the UK press though... I've always liked The Independant, much better now since they do a tabloid size edition... the regular tabloids really do set themselves up as 'campaigners for justice x' (wheras they only want to sell papers), and spend enough time slagging each other off and devoting multiple pages spreads to Big Brother.

RE the 'Loosers' bit, I haven't read into that too much but the 'Loosers' that was scrawled on the Beckham photo must refer to that slapper and the fact that England did lose... Rooney was the player who comes out of the tounament smelling of roses... either I've misread your comment or the person who damaged the photos couldn't spell :)

I was thinking the same thing... and the rumour (at least the one I've seen over the years) was that JMS was a teensy but peeved at Paramount/Viacom because of this issue. It also reared its head when the DS9 finale came out and the parallels with 'Sleeping In Light' (Bab5 finale), given that Bab5 went for 5 years and DS9 for 7 (Bab5 finishing before DS9)... although JMS had the whole of Bab5 planned before it started filming, and the Paramount pitch may have included it.

Mind, it would be a great coup (for JMS) if something he pitched got taken on... especially in light of these past events. Although I'm still of the opinion that Trek needs a break, a LONG break... I stopped watching Enterprise half way through season 2 episode 1 and I don't envisage going back to it.

But quite a lot of people said that in the EU elections in the UK...

..but Mr Blair seems to want to do otherwise. It almost seems like he is playing a game of brinkmanship with the country, and if so I don't think he should be doing it with the British electorate.

Mind I voted for the Greens instead when El Reg suggested that the Conservatives might acually support the EU Patent reforms. I can see closer integration with us and the EU in the future, but I think it is being rushed (esp. considering the red tape, beaurocracy, corruption, et al)... plus I don't fancy the knee jerk reaction of completely withdrawing from Europe that UKIP desire (but at least they're in a position to give more counterweight to what Labour/Lib Dems would like).

The other worry about this precident is that more potential resources are being targeted at the blocking (oh 'we' don't need to do anything, BT is doing it for us)... a bit like surgery after the event has actually happened, rather than using preventative methods. The sites will simply move or try other distro methods.

I can appreciate the idea that someone is actively doing this blocklist (rather than sit on thier collective asses), but there is the slippery slope aspect and with BT at the helm, that does concern me... but for one I'd rather more energy goes into taking down these bastards full stop.

They might be letting Mozilla and others gain a bit more ground so that in a couple of years, if the playing field became a little more level... then MS can play the "we've not got a monopoly on browsers" as extra leverage on governments/organisations who view them with more suspicion on this very issue (as well as other matters). It could be a more long term plan with them.

  25. Thatcher wasn't pro Europe on EU To Counter Echelon With Quantum Cryptography? · · Score: 4, Informative

Mrs Thatcher was distinctly anti-Euro, apart from free trade and good relations which follows the last referendum the UK had. It was the Major years (Maastricht treaty and in then out of the ERM) followed by Blair who pursued the closer ties.

Despite being promised a referendum on the EU constitution (which is a woeful hack of previous revisions), the British public hasn't been given a date on it... and the trust (read as 'lack of') I have in Blair is as such that he would do the referendum after the point of no return (sorry people if you voted 'no', it's too late now!).

I for one would like the closer ties with Europe (i.e. what we have now), but what is proposed I think is too much too soon... and there are too many problems which really need sorting first (red tape, beaurocracy, politicians voting in new laws when they have no clue as to what they are, etc etc). Added to that the majority of the British public need to know exactly what is going on, and what will happen before we're even semi happy with it.

I've always been of liberal views and what you would call a floating voter, but I wouldn't trust the Lib Dems (almost wanting to powershare with Labour, no real manifesto), I definately don't trust Blair.... but despite his previous convictions I think the Conservatives are in a much stronger position with Howard (especially regarding party unity).

Maybe the biggest problem that'll hit us in a couple of years is the national debt (where the conservatives saved a crap load of money by taxing the country half to death - mind Labour were happy to add to that) and the housing prices/issues, add to that the amount of money being literally thrown at the NHS is a nice little ticking time bomb that I'm not looking forward to going off.

Anyway, most opinion/info in this post is AFAIK and is open to correction/counter viewpoints... as they say (damn this zippy led US keyboard), just my 0.02 UK Sterling (yes I do know about character map, I just can't be arsed!).
