yes but is punctuation really necessary in a game I mean you can get along just fine without any of those symbols and anyway I was thinking since nethack had so many addons maybe you should be more specific tell us which if any additions you used falcons eye was cool
This would be spectacular, except that the apparatus as described does not function. A great hullabaloo has been made regarding ancient civilizations' supposed technological advances, and yet not one of them wrote of molecular structures, proteins, chemistry and knowledge of the elements, or materials science of composites or alloys.
If building flying machines as described in your post, one must understand the physical principles of flight, aerodynamics, and center of gravity for the device. The descriptions of these magical texts are always overly vague and no actual mechanism of any purpose can be built according to them. It would then appear that these ancient texts are not conclusively indicative of an advanced technological achievement.

I've been to Roswell, seen the museum. They had one piece that they claimed was actual debris from a craft. Affixed to its surface was a small spade-type electrical contact with a red rubber insulating grommet. As an electronics technician, I am extremely familiar with this connector family. It appeared completely mundane and terrestrial.
The photographic evidence was also not particularly compelling. I require evidence before I profess belief in a thing, be it unicorns, ETs, or Bigfoot.
I've researched and read up on as much UFOlogy as I can get my hands on, and my conclusion so far is that of the photographic evidence I've seen, many are hoaxes, some are atmospheric phenomena (lenticular clouds particularly), some are lens flares from a light source, and about 5% are too fuzzy to make any definitive conclusions on.
I do, however believe aliens probably exist. I just don't think they're here yet.
Your straw man argument that skeptics are nonbelievers because they are closed minded is a foolish attack. You would do better to offer compelling evidence to support your argument, rather than attacking your detractors.
As Prince is one of the best guitarists in the entire world, and as he's had numerous top 10 hits, with many of them still on mp3 players around the developed world, the music industry can kiss his ass. If they decide not to carry him in record stores, he will have the option of retailing his own new material as he chooses. When demand rises for his stuff, they'll be forced to carry it anyway because they're motivated by money, not spite.
"Progress" is what we call that state where infant mortality goes from 60% to 1%.
"Progress" is what we call that state where cancers and genetic diseases no longer have to lead inexorably to death.
"Progress" is what we call that state where individuals are no longer threatened daily by tribal infighting, but rather have access to a structure, a legal system, for redress of grievances against one another, or even the powers that exist in our nation.
"Progress" is what we call that state where a family can support itself without a single drought bringing them to starvation.
The western world has progress. I'm sorry if your degree hasn't brought you success, but remember that the decision to pursue direction in your life has been yours and yours alone. Schooling was provided at no cost. Thousands of people rise from even the most squalid conditions in the West to success. Thousands do not, but most who fail do so because they were given a culture by their parents which leads to failure. It is a sad fact that if your parents do not teach you how the world works, and how to succeed within it, you will most likely not even approach success.
It is the easy path to become jaded, to say that success was never a possibility for you. The hard path is to look back at those poor decisions to not do homework, to not pursue a lucrative career and give up partying and laziness, and realize that if you've failed, you did so at some point in the past, and that it is not too late to try to better the resulting situation.
There is a lot of progress still to make. Still, inequalities exist between races, and between the sexes. Just because success is possible for most does not imply it is just as easy for all. These are the areas where progress has still to take us further.
The Third World is different. In the Third World, if you're born poor, you WILL die poor. Progress will eventually change this even there. Science is curing the diseases which kill their young children, and helping the aging to deal with the symptoms of life. These advances are being applied even in the Third World, slowly, as costs permit. It is not all screwed. Instead of declaring war on the West, the most important thing for Westerners to do is assist "progress" to be applied to ever more people's lives across the world. Seeking to revert to a pastoral existence is not an option, for this world has seven billion people on it and most do not live on arable land sufficient to feed them with ancient farming practices.
Forgive yourself your youth and realize that your efforts are best spent not railing against the inequality with a fist in the air, but with your hands on the tools which better the lives of those less fortunate than yourself.
Alright then, "jihadist", is the western world stupid for not having honor killings of our young women who are victimized by men?
Are we foolish for not treating our women like cattle?
Are we ignorant because we allow people to say that which offends another without needing to chop somebody's head, arms, or feet off?
If you're an Islamist, I can honestly say your ideologies are 1300 years too old to be taken seriously, and contain so much malice, hatred, intolerance and foolishness that any movement by the west toward your way of life would be a gigantic leap backwards.
The ONLY reason Islam gets the tolerance it gets from the western press and politicians is because there are cowards who are afraid of your violent, sociopathic tendencies.
So go ahead, use the computers the West created, the network the West built, to condemn us. It makes you look exactly like what you are: a person who has embraced the ideologies of 6th century unschooled goat-herders.
Yeah, all lawyers should be removed. Sure, because companies and individuals are so completely reasonable when you attempt negotiations with them without lawyers. I'll give you an example of a typical consumer/corporation negotiation on something as simple as defective product or something like that:
{consumer} Hey, (company name), I got some defective (stuff) from you and I wanted to know where to return it for a full refund.
{Company rep} I have a policy against refunding money. I'm not liable, yada yada.
{consumer} Are you sure? My state's law provides that all defective goods be replaced or refunded. Your product is designed to be defective, so I don't want another, I want my money back so I can buy one from someone else.
{Company rep} Well, we don't do that, regardless.
24 hours later...
{consumer} Well, I talked to my attorney and we've got a letter to you and to a judge asking for a case in small claims regarding the refund.
{Company rep} Oh all right, we'll give your money back, I don't know why you people always have to get lawyers involved, geez.
Many people are completely selfish and unreasonable, or even downright dishonest. Without lawyers, you can't get them to play nice, even if you're asking for a completely reasonable thing, like asking that a network router actually route packets instead of catching fire and routing zero packets. You look up on the net and thousands have had the exact same problem with that company's routers. So you call them up and say you're in your warranty period, you know the dang thing is irreparably broken in design, and you want your money back. An honest businessman who finds he's sold defective and non functioning goods knows that he has no choice but to give the money back or somehow fix the problem so it's GONE. Here's a hint: The XBOX 360 has had repeated problems with disk read/write, and overheating. They're OK (not excellent) on warranty, but if you're experiencing your third read/write error a day after warranty ends with someone like (CENSORED OTHER COMPANY HERE), you are screwed. ((hint- they're in China and their initials are M_I, and they make crap.))
Not so fast! Humans are made of hydrocarbons, remember that. Hydrocarbons are energy rich and widely distributed in the galaxy. Alien microbes could very likely have adapted to metabolize hydrocarbons, and although they probably would not use our own biological mechanisms to replicate their DNA like a virus does, and probably would not be parasitic organisms compatible with our pH and temperature, they'd likely LOVE to eat us as food.
Bah, coffee snob. Nothing is any good if it's good enough for other people (the boobs!).
Seriously, while I am certain that your method produces a fine cup of coffee, buying pre-roasted coffee and grinding it yourself or grinding it at the grocery store yields perfectly acceptable coffee if you freeze the grounds when you get home.
I use a cheap Bialetti stove-top espresso maker and pour it into a filthy glass. I drink it with some cream and a little sugar, and wash it down with half a dozen Wal-Mart donuts. The large holes in the Bialetti machine allow a nice fine muddy sludge to form at the bottom of the cup and this is my favorite gritty little treat. I drink it in a filthy glass because I am an internet badass and that's how I roll.
Skeptics DO go after peddlers of religion, however, MOST religious leaders do not perpetrate hoaxes in order to convince their followers. Instead, they merely leave it as "a matter of faith" in a religion where NOT believing is a sin.
Christians, for example, will deliberately avoid providing evidence of God, believing that setting up an experiment to detect him would be either sinful, or inconclusive as God would not consent to the experiment. So, it's kind of pointless to go after religious leaders unless they do something really ridiculous. However, you're dead wrong when you say Randi only goes after people like Uri. Look up Peter Popoff on Google sometime. He was a televangelist engaging in fraud, and Randi himself caught and outed him.
He is NOT a magician. A magician's performance is labeled as such, and a magician does not use the ruse of paranormal ability to fool people into giving money for "healings", and does not promise that the magic act will change the lives of those who view it.
Magicians also espouse no special philosophy for dealing with the substantive problems of modern life.
Uri Geller is a fraud. David Copperfield is a magician. Copperfield has written NO books on psychic energies or other questionable items. He is an entertainer and sells tickets to see his show and be entertained by it. Mr. Geller instead promises miracles. He's like a magician with no showmanship AND the desire to steal from others.
I say psychic energies are questionable because they can't be detected by any known means, and yet people know about them somehow. This poses some problems regarding the origin of such "knowledge".
Console games do not have "hardware requirements". To do so would be completely antithetical to the purpose of console gaming.
PC games have hardware requirements. The expectation for console games is that if your grandmother buys you a game for the XBOX 360, you can play the game as soon as you get it. ALWAYS.
Exceptions?
Ok, simple logical question:
Do video games cause violence, or do violent people seek out video games?
Which is the cause and which is (an) effect? So numerous studies show that people who commit major crimes statistically tend to play violent games. How do we know that they didn't play the games because they enjoyed (or were obsessed by) violence a bit more than average?
People enjoy violent entertainment. Violent stories through oral tradition, Punch and Judy, violent books, violent movies, violent games on the playground, etc. It's part of being human. We like things that are exciting.
Maybe some people enjoy video games because they're dynamic and exciting, and some people like them because they want to harm something and society won't let them? Something tips them over the edge til the consequences are not real (since they plan to kill themselves) and they kill people because they're angry, sadistic, selfish bastards? Maybe being one of those people makes team sports not so much of an option and they end up playing first person shooters because people don't want to interact with psychopaths, sociopaths and malcontents?
Just a thought. Your politician may wish to boil the whole situation into a 20 second sound byte that drastically oversimplifies everything. Be warned. I'm not an expert in ANYTHING.
Nice 'Night of the Comet' reference. Nobody ever makes them. I guess it's because other than you and I, nobody anywhere has seen that film in like a decade.
Wouldn't the greatest danger to national security be our government spying on us in complete disregard to the laws of the United States, the legislation of its Congress, and the Bill of Rights?
I mean, you want to talk about an ever-present threat, let's talk about a rogue Federal Government. Because that doesn't live in some desert far away, it lives here, and it has guns, and it is under the constant danger that it will become tyrannical. This is the natural state of a Government. It is always teetering on the apex of the chasms of ineffectiveness and totalitarianism.
The government now is arguing in a court of Law that the right of the people to petition their government for redress of grievances is limited to those matters the Government wishes to talk about. We have provisions for cases like this to go forward; courts have the ability to hold closed sessions and issue gag orders. That is all the power the government and the courts have, and it is IMMORAL and repugnant to grant more. To do so is to give blanket permission for all manner of ills to be perpetrated against the American people by an increasingly insular and secretive government.
It does not MATTER that we face a threat from outside. We have always faced this threat, from the first day of the establishment of our country until now. Never has there been a day that every person on this planet felt only benevolent thoughts about the USA. Why now, then, do we surrender to the government so easily? Is it the fat on our hips holding us from action? The seductive glow of our televisions placating us? If it is fear of our government which keeps us from speaking up, do we then believe that the environment for such grievances will be better later, when the government has had adequate time to become comfortable with the new arrangements?
When will America riot? Now, when such a riot need only be sufficient to awaken the Government to the fact that their actions must be actions that someone, a man, an agency, or an administration, must take account for? Or perhaps later, when the government that is supposed to serve our interests has instead traded voting booths for bunkers? Do we NEED a Tienanmen Square?
It doesn't need to be violent, but the suggestion that violence is still possible, that the Government may not be permitted to isolate itself from the First Amendment and our rights to due process. Ten Million in Washington, armed but calm, would probably let them know that this is NOT okay. It really doesn't have to be Congressional heads on pikes.
I think you missed the point of his sarcasm. The point is that for any measure to be effective, it has to be enforced. Because combustion is less expensive than renewable resources, that enforcement will lead to totalitarianism. The reason this is so is that when a law MUST be enforced in spite of being against the majority's self interest, that law's enforcement must lead to totalitarianism.
For prior examples:
See communism
See welfare state
Well, the article is all well and good, but laying blame on Linux because your previous operating system was written by a company who puts each and every file, interface, and service in a proprietary format is a mistake in my opinion. Let's go over what really happened to you:
1. You installed an OS and apps which are not standards-based, but rather attempt to lock in the user with nonstandard tools and formatting. This OS arrived after UNIX standards were already fairly well documented, and Microsoft decided to reinvent the wheels mostly so you'd have to use their stuff.
2. Guess what, it works. Of all the filetypes and formats available, Microsoft's are the hardest to get going in Linux. Ditto for network services and interfacing with server side apps.
3. Microsoft is building ActiveX into all kinds of tools, basically limiting their services to only those clients running MS Windows. Success there too for MS.
4. After you'd nursed at the teat for years, locking yourself into their formats and services, now all of a sudden, you want to migrate and you place the blame for your services failure to be interoperable on the standards based Linux OS? That's just idiotic, and is the real reason your article is gonna get flamed. If anything, Microsoft has to share that blame for not creating their tools based on standards, instead assuming that they have a monopoly and that anyone not running MS Windows is not worth establishing productive communications with.
I'm not saying that Linux doesn't need improvements- what I am saying is that most of the headaches are fluff and nonsense dealing with trying to force other people's products to play nice.
I'm kind of stumped as to where to start on this article. It fails to support most of its claims logically, relying on anecdotal (at best) studies which appear, at least through the article's description of their methodology, to be completely flawed and pointless.
Heating of any kind alters protein structures. Microwave heating is a PURELY mechanical operation, as microwave radiation is non ionizing. At the most fundamental level, microwaves shake water molecules, and the heat is generated by friction.
Friction is much less scary than the term "radiation", but there is a significant difference between microwave energy and something like nuclear alpha radiation.
Nuclear alpha radiation is charged particles, without real frequency information or a packet structure like light or microwaves. The real hazard from the threat we usually see as "radiation" is that big heavy particles zipping through your body at near the speed of light leaves little holes in your proteins. It severs them into small chunks and can damage cell nuclei.
Electromagnetic radiation in the microwave spectrum is more like light. It excites other atoms but does not alter atoms, EVER. Sure, you can destroy molecules with electromagnetic radiation, but the damage comes from mechanical interaction between molecules caused by heating or induced electrical currents. Electrical currents, of course, CAN alter molecules (not atoms, except at millions of volts) because electrical currents can force electron exchange and therefore break covalent bonds.
In conclusion, it is most likely that microwave radiation will not harm you unless it rises to the level where it causes significant heating to your tissues. You will notice this, and the smell.
It is unlikely that microwaves could cause tumors or alter your food any more than your conventional oven could. Remember that even an electrical conventional oven will add heat to food, oxidizing sugars, breaking proteins, removing water, and destroying or deforming collagen structures in both meats and vegetables. To cause tumors, microwaves would have to repeatedly heat up and damage cells, eventually wearing them down to the point where their natural tendency to stop replicating fails. This leads to non structured growth ie, a tumor. Microwaves do not penetrate water saturated objects very deeply at all. Usually just a couple of inches, even at 100w/sq in. surface area. At deeper depths they are attenuated sharply.
The type of heating I'm talking about would not be just a few tenths of a degree, but perhaps 10 or 15 degrees. You would notice this and it would trigger some discomfort.
The bit where microwave oven from the sun is DC based has no meaning. Microwave energy of one frequency from one source is pretty identical to microwave energy from another. There are not different flavors of microwaves. There is only power and frequency.
The "health" scare wackos are actually shrewd businessmen taking people's natural fear of disease and death, and turning it into demand for a group of products whose effectiveness has never been demonstrated:
"organic" plants (same as regular, but with more bugs and a little less chrysanthemum extract)
Vitamin "supplements" (expensive dayglo urine pills)
Magnets for your health (but somehow magnetic flux from powerlines is bad, mmmkay?)
"Cleansing" products (your body has mechanisms for removing and isolating toxins, adding additional things to your system does not remove the other things that were there)
Homeopathy (don't get me started, go to www.randi.org)
air ionizers (they don't clean the air, and they add ozone, a toxic oxygen3 molecule)
Herbal supplements (plants make chemicals to protect themselves, not heal you, if it benefitted potatoes or lavender to be toxic to you, they would do so eventually)
Creams, gels, lotions, salves, balms, tinctures, preparations, and ointments which purport to make you handsomer, hairier, less hairy, bustier, softer, less wrinkly, lighter, darker, shinier, duller, smoother, more radiant, etc.

For prior examples: See communism See welfare state
Thank you for the trolling/flamebait. Best of luck to ya.
Well, the article is all well and good, but laying blame on Linux because your previous operating system was written by a company who puts each and every file, interface, and service in a proprietary format is a mistake in my opinion. Let's go over what really happened to you: 1.
The "health" scare wackos are actually shrewd businessmen taking people's natural fear of disease and death, and turning it into demand for a group of products whose effectiveness has never been demonstrated: "organic" plants (same as regular, but with more bugs and a little less chrysanthemum extract) Vitamin "supplements" (expensive dayglo urine pills) Magnets for your health (but somehow magnetic flux from powerlines is bad, mmmkay?) "Cleansing" products (your body has mechanisms for removing and isolating toxins, adding additional things to your system does not remove the other things that were there) Homeopathy (don't get me started, go to www.randi.org) air ionizers (they don't clean the air, and they add ozone, a toxic oxygen3 molecule) Herbal supplements (plants make chemicals to protect themselves, not heal you, if it benefitted potatoes or lavender to be toxic to you, they would do so eventually) Creams, gels, lotions, salves, balms, tinctures, preparations, and ointments which purport to make you handsomer, hairier, less hairy, bustier, softer, less wrinkly, lighter, darker, shinier, duller, smoother, more radiant, etc.
