It's been ages since I've programmed in C++, but it's good to know see these favorable comparisons. I think about the Struts/Hibernate/Oracle applications I write today and shudder when I imagine what how difficult it would be to have to develop web applications in C++. C++ will be around forever and certainly has its place, but long live Java.

  3. Re:Et Tu, Apple? on Apple Hunts Playfair in India · · Score: 1

Your argument holds no water. You're not going to get thrown in the gulag for changing a .plist file, but when you download a song from iTunes and use PlayFair to circumvent the DRM you are violating the license that you, um, agreed to at the time of purchase. Apple does need to "descend on people" that violate their DRM, because if they don't, music companies partnered with Apple will pull out. If you don't like the Apple's DRM, don't buy songs from them.

I'd be frank about it. It's a fact of life in today's market place that employment comes and goes quickly. While brief stints of employment may have counted against you three or more years ago, a reasonable hiring manager will recognize that you're a victim of the current economic situation. Just don't present yourself as a victim; being positive about it is the best course.

Why do you say "Hate to say it", when you don't mean it?

I don't agree that there's a close link between the "current spread of viruses and worms on the Internet" and "the fact that Adobe tried to jail the developer who publicized security weaknesses of a commercial product". Was the guy who broke Adobe's security just trying to publicize a weakness? I'm not sure about that...

And, Microsoft's tools don't come close to competing with Adobe's products, unless you're making grandma's newsletter or making stupid banner images.

  8. It's the applications on Now We Have the Internet, But Why Do We Need It? · · Score: 1

It's not the internet that's important, it's the applications that are built on top of it. I certainly benefit from being able to access my bank accounts, find movie showtimes, research job-related questions, look for work when necessary, and (gasp) read slashdot. Could I live without the internet? Sure. My parents lived happy and constructive lives without it. But, in my world, it just makes a lot of things more convenient.

Yes, there are times, especially post 9/11, that you need to help your kid understand violence and violent behavior. The thing is, violence does not have to be part of everyday life. It shouldn't be for a 10 year old. If you let them play violent games, you're making the choice for them.

Cleared up a couple of weeks after I stopped. I used to get considerable wrist pain which I believe originated from keyboards with reduced tactile feedback. That's all cleared up since switching to one of those old IBM (clackity-clack) keyboards. Pain has subsided considerably; I'm sure not typing any less. The iGuesturePad sounds pretty cool, but I'd be pretty skeptical about claims that it reduces RSI.

Anyway, it would have been cool if they could have convinced Adobe et. all to make the cross-grade price cheaper than the normal upgrade price. I own too many Adobe products to make the switch at once; especially when adding all those upgrade costs to the price of some choice new hardware. Maybe someday...
