Routers and firewalls still have to take time to process all the incoming packets. It may do some good for a while, but a SYN flood will eventually overwhelm the router, especially in the proportions being talked about here.

Remember that blocking the packets doesn't make them not come to the router. It just means they don't get past the router.

I'm sorry, but as nice as some of Foxit's features were, the two things that irritated me about it were first that you still had to pay to get the full featureset, and second that it kept altering the goddamn context menu option. "Foxit Reader, Best Reader for Everyday Use!"

How's 'bout just "Foxit Reader." *Regedit*

No, your name is "Foxit Reader." That's...fucking...it. You don't tell me what you are, I tell you what you are on MY computer. And stop expanding out my context menu with a name 3 times longer than any of the other options contained therein.

Try SumatraPDF if you just need to read documents. It's super-lightweight, which does unfortunately mean it lacks some features of Foxit, Evince, and others, but I find that I'm usually only interested in reading documents anyway and for that, Sumatra is excellent.

They either don't get it or don't care. It's not the act of putting a CD in the drive that people hate. I mean, I'm sure that's the case for some, but probably not the majority of Slashdotters.

The part people hate is the assumption that they're not "authorized" to be using the product they just forked over $50 to get. The part people hate is the notion that they need permission to play their game. The part people hate is the feeling that despite shelling out 50 dollars of their hard-earned money, they somehow don't own the game. And the part people REALLY hate is the thought that some company can arbitrarily take away their ability to play whenever they want just by pushing a button.

We don't care what form DRM takes. We care that the DRM is there at all, and we want it gone. Period.

As though I weren't as eager myself to get my degree as people are to see me get it. My suspicion is that it isn't me at all, but rather that other people are only happy when they're bitching about something. It's weird being a 24-year-old undergrad due to monetary concerns, but maybe the "bragging rights" will be worth it. Or maybe not. Whatever, though, this shit's gotta get done and if I can pay for it (which I can), I will (which I do). I'm sure Uematsu also lost a few nights' sleep at the thought of Aeris' musical theme being thoroughly trounced in the emotional-impact department by "Pain" and "Her Last Breath," both of which were 16-bit chiptunes.

This absolutely retarded convention should have disappeared with the Genesis and SNES. Why is it, when I was playing Doom on my 486 back in 1994 and could save (and QUIT...you know... STOP PLAYING ) whenever I wanted, that I have to wait 20 minutes until I get to a magical spot blessed by the video game pope before I can save my game and turn off my Playstation 2 , a system that is orders of magnitude more powerful than the save-on-the-fly-capable PC on which I was fragging zombies?

    Attention developers:

    • Girlfriends happen
    • Friends happen
    • Dinner happens
    • Fatigue happens
    • Storms happen, at least in my region, and as a result...
    • Power outages happen
    • And frankly, me getting sick of playing during a given session happens

And sometimes I want or need to stop playing on a moment's notice. I don't really want to leave the console on eating up power and running up my electric bill, and I also don't want to lose hours of gameplay (some JRPG dungeons do last that long) because you assholes thought it would be cute to not let me save my game and do something else. Your game is not the only thing in the world I want to do for fun, and moods can change, especially after long sessions. Furthermore, I know you can do save-anywhere because SaGa Frontier, LUNAR, and Persona 2 all did it on the PS1.

Death to save points in 2008. Long live save-on-the-fly.

I don't seem to recall FF12's OST too well myself. However, if you want some really impressive Sakimoto work, listen to Vagrant Story. It's possibly his best. If not his crowning achievement, it's damn close. Track 3, "Climax of the Greylands Incident" demonstrates his greatness quite well.

  25. Re:Hikari from Kingdom Hearts? on Twelve Game Music Tracks Worth Keeping · · Score: 3, Insightful

Well, the woman has a serious way with choral vocals. A serious way. However, a lot of her stuff relies heavily on acoustic instrumentation and is on the lighter side. What I'd love to hear is a collaborative effort between her and Shoji Meguro (of recent Shin Megami Tensei über-fame). Fuse her talent for complexity and ability to work with many voices singing in unison with his acid-rock style, knack for distortions, and ability to create extremely dark tones and just-plain-evil sounding music. Track down a copy of the Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne soundtrack and listen to the "Reason Boss Battle" theme. It might be called "Kotowari Boss Battle." Now imagine that, but with Kajiura's choirs. Same thing for "Hari-Hara: 2nd Movement" from the Digital Devil Saga soundtrack.

I would also submit Yoshitaka Hirota (Shadow Hearts) or Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill) as candidates, but they can tend a little too much toward "noise horror" and the ambience and tone of their work would clash with Kajiura's. Maybe Sung-Woon Jang (Magna Carta, War of Genesis), but even then, I have my doubts when it comes to his more intense work like "Devil's Rhapsody" (War of Genesis 3). "Battle with the God of Beasts" (Magna Carta: Crimson Stigmata/Tears of Blood) might work okay, but a lot of Jang's work is either too melody-rich already to work with choirs (one would detract from the other) or already uses choirs and is thus awesome in its own right. See "Sorrowful Fate" from MC:CS/ToB for an example.

Kajiura's music is highly melodic and certainly never boring, but it lacks some "oomph," and I think Meguro is the perfect candidate to give it the kick in the ass that it needs.
