It's an OEM license requirement. In order for an XP OEM license (which is significantly cheaper than a full XP standalone license) to be kosher, it has to be bundled with hardware. Fortunately it can be something as simple as a mouse. Some have claimed you can even use just an IDE cable and it's technically okay. Personally I believe them, but it never hurts to double-check if you're planning on using OEM XP yourself.

That depends on whether it's a matter of practicality or principle. If you're out for practicality and just want things to work as easily as possible for you, then yes, you can make the case that you're losing out when you take the long road. However, if you're speaking from principle and you want to get a change made, then some sacrifices are necessary. Nobody ever said it was going to be painless, just that it will hopefully be more painful for EA in the long run.

You're right, it is wrong that the game can't be returned/exchanged once it's open. Is there actually any law that says stores can't take back opened software, or is that just another bit of collusion between publishers and store management? Because I think Stardock had some things to say about returns and refunds being...you know...a non-negotiable necessity enough as to belong on that "Bill of Rights" they drew up.

Which is why sex education needs to teach kids to use proper protection instead of this fairy-tale "abstinence only" bullshit.

The problem in your statement comes from the word "unprotected." "Underage" and the entire age-of-consent can of worms is another matter entirely, but regardless of one's opinion of what the "proper age" is for sex, "underage" sex is less inherently risky than rampant unsafe sex. Unfortunately, people far more prudish and sex-averse than yourself have taken it upon themselves to decide that children shouldn't know how to properly guard against unwanted pregnancy and/or venereal disease. After all, nobody in god-with-a-capital-G's country has sex outside of marriage! Why, that would be sinful!

Fix this one little thing, teach kids to exercise common sense when they have sex (because seriously, they can, will, and do have sex no matter how hard they're hit over the head with the chastity-hammer) and we go a long way toward unscrewing our at-present screwed-up priorities.
