It's about time someone who legitimately uses the service spoke up! The MPAA must be falling all over themselves reading this forum, with all these people, "DVDShrink"ing for backup purposes, when clearly, people are blatently copying. How can people justify calling it a backup when you don't own the actual copy? I've got friends, that just last night my wife spoke to, that said they regularly "burn" rentals. I just about fell off my chair - these people barely know how a computer works - but they know how to burn a DVD.
NetFlix knows this - it's their BUSINESS to know. The only issue really, is that they didn't make it clear they were actively combatting this issue. Either from pressure from the MPAA, or pressure from their shareholders for increased profits/holding the line, at this point, I'd be more inclined to take Door #2.
As with any popular service, it's always the people who complain the loudest, that make up the smallest group. Can someone rent 10 movies a week and justify it not due to ripping and burning? Sure, but it's a very small minority. Essentially, as other have said before, they need to either 1. Shut up and deal with it or 2. Move on and thank $diety that it lasted for as long as it has.
but really, do you want MS's latest bit of bugware on your desktop?
No, but recently moving from Linux to Windows again (GASP!!!), because of compatibility problems that WINE wouldn't or couldn't address, Id have to say that because of forced updates, you can bet your bottom dollar that Microsoft will make this a required update. As well, for those desktops who have downloadable security updates on by default, all those desktops will wake up the next morning with IE 7 loaded and ready to go.
Don't think for a moment that it won't happen. Theres too many people who use computers that simply don't give a rats ass about security fix this and update that - thats for the geeks to clean up after they fuck it up.
Exactly. Now I don't know about you, but IMHO, when I see a Hummer driving down the street, price tag aside, I don't go "Man, I really would want one of those!", rather I look at them in disgust, as a tremendous waste of metal and energy. Those things get what 7-9 MPG? Its laughable! Don't you find it funny that they don't even publish what the MPG is for that vehicle? Like someone mentioned before, I don't go around boasting my car gets 1 MPG. I'd feel more guilty about having something that is just so wasteful. Why do you think LED lights this Christmas are really taking off? People just want to feel good about what they purchase and knowing that they only consume 10% of the energy and last 10x as long as conventional lights, makes them popular. In 2-3 more years you wont see anything but...
Your telling me that said "mom and pop" store can get me volume pricing like Dell can? My point is why can't I just get a stripped down computer from Dell for a little cheaper, instead of having to go to a Mom and Pop store and pay more for the parts and labour? I don't think they would be willing to offer me $500 bucks for a full system with no O/S installed. Is there no easy solution to this problem that Microsoft has created?
How about getting rid of the Microsoft Tax on new computers as well? They may not be a monopoly anymore but why should I pay more for a computer that I don't want Windows installed on?
If Suprnova wanted to stay online, they should of moved their servers to Sweden - I think $15 grand would of paid for that move nicely, with a couple extra beers left over....
Would mall management be at all responsible for warning the public about it?
No, but IMHO, management should be concerned and proactively start dealing with the situation, because inaction will only result in further potential lost sales though word-of-mouth advertising...
"Oh yeah you know that store called ABC?"
"Yeah! Where?"
"In XYZ Mall..."
"Oh yeah... why what happened?"
It soon becomes clear that the mall would seem to be responsible through no fault of their own, by the appearance of supporting merchants who rip off customers, by continuing to accept the same money that was ripped off, even it is for rent.
So I log into eBay and I'm trying to collect hockey cards. I just happen to luck out and find a local seller who has what I want. Well his auctions run for 7 days and I bid on them, because, frankly, he started his bidding at 99 cents and its a steal! It's getting closer to the end of auction and I phone him up, just to find out if there's any other cards I might need that he can sell, and he mentions that he got his son to log in and bid up the price of all the auctions I had bid on, since in his own words "Those cards are worth more - I just made the mistake of putting them in the wrong category!" the big red flag was seeing some other person with zero feedback all of a sudden win every single auction I had bid on. I quickly look up the shill bidding page and fire off an e-mail to their support team, and I kid you not - 15 minutes later, all his auctions are pulled and his account completely toasted - 700 feedback and most of it good - all gone.
As a seller myself who is honest about what I sell, and communicate with buyers on the status of their items, seeing this quick of a reponse was surprising - I refreshed my eBay and saw the items dissappear from it one by one with each refresh - it was kinda creepy actually.
Just my opinion, which isn't the status quo, because I think they are sincerly trying to change their image, because im just as skeptical as everyone else.
Uh oh....Can you smell what the Google is cookin?

I opened my gmail this morning and immediately clicked "delete... delete... delete... delete..." until there was no more Webclips. Can't we just keep it simple? G-Mail is fully functional the way it is, but I'm seeing a trend to "over optimization" and eventually it'll be crammed full of everything and you'll have to search to find your e-mail - now that's ironic.
I suppose; they're much less intrusive than even the ads on Slashdot.
Actually, you bring a good point. I've heard alot of people call Slashdot -- Googledot, however I see more Microsoft ads here then anywhere else (before AdBlocking the Flash iframes). Since Google would be giving us Ads relevant to the content on the page and not in annoying processor cycle-sucking flash ads, why is it that Slashdot doesn't use Google Ads on its site? You can't tell me that Microsoft willing to pay more!
It shows 40 percent of U.S. adults used the Web to obtain news, weather or sports information, a dramatic increase from the 7 percent who surfed in 1997, when the bureau conducted a similar study.
I run some sites, and trust me when I say its a complete ripoff.
GoDaddy may not be the best option for servers but for 500 Gb of bandwidth for $34.95/month and 10 Gb of space on their Virtual Server options, it sure beats the hell out of Microshaft, and I'm willing to overlook that they shut off the Apache service when the server load gets too high (I know someones literally watching the CPU load values because sometimes I can spike it to 10.000 and nothing happens and sometimes the apache service stops when the load is over 1.000).
I didn't even bother looking for their overage charges, but im sure they are astronomical as well. All it takes is a Slashdotting and you've already gone over your limit.
Late Friday, Ballmer issued a statement disputing Lucovsky's declaration. "Mark Lucovsky's account of our conversation last November is a gross exaggeration of what actually took place," Ballmer said. "Mark's decision to leave was disappointing and I urged him strongly to change his mind. But his characterization of that meeting is not accurate."
Obviously wasn't strong enough - next time use a table or the desk?
True enough... it just bugs me when people post buttons like that when clearly, you wouldn't want to be giving anyone credit for that design :)

Why would they want to waste their money collecting everybody's garbage?
One person's garbage is another persons treasure. Believe it.

How about bypassing NONE now? They've redirected the print page to the index page, so you get to see it all in its spammy glory.

So, giving AOL a billion dollars to continue their work IS evil.
Nah, its just outsourcing that evil.

That would be almost 14 hours solid on Slashdot, with a break provided by samzenpus at 1pm - is it really that bad to work for CmdrTaco?
In other words, this is most likely just a silly typo. Nothing to see, move along
