I had a friend who just got back from Japan after spending two years there. He enjoys anime and his PSP which is Japanese. He can't use any American UMD movies and he's a little pissed about that. He puts anime he downloads onto Memory Sticks. He said to me, "As long as it's not released in the US, it's legal." Of course, it isn't.

It's ethical IMHO, but not legal.

Sounds about right. I had a call from a collection agency and the debt sounded bogus. I really should have stopped talking to them then, but I refused to agree to anything at the time. I looked up my rights and asked them to send me proof on the second call. Their response was "Oh, you owe it all right, now what payment option do you want or would you prefer us to take you to court?" Obviously they weren't giving up. I didn't bend and they stopped calling.

In the end, they sold my "debt" off to another agency and I got a letter from agency #2 telling me what I "owed" them. I sent a letter back demanding proof of the original debt. Never heard another thing from them. I read of several people who had their debts shuffled from agency to agency and some who'd even paid the debt and still had to deal with the exact same thing later from another agency. I wonder how many of these bogus "debts" get sold off to another unsuspecting collection agency after the first couldn't collect...

Misdemeanors are usually only applicable within five years. Felonies are generally applicable forever(except when sealed or expunged). Felons are not in a protected class.

That person can sue, but his chances are very slim unless it's a specific crime and/or state. The crime you mentioned is a felony and there's no time limit on that.

He was closing in to kill his son when Mark Wilson fired on him.

Wilson has been credited with saving not only the man's son, but others as well. Wilson hit Arroyo several times in the chest, but the bulletproof vest was effective. Arroyo did kill Wilson before running. The gun battle continued about two miles away and Arroyo was killed by police.

I hear news stories every few weeks of something like this, but almost never hear of anyone able to respond to the situation except police. I know of one friend in Houston, TX who's had to use his gun on a couple of occasions in downtown at night. He's never had to fire. He values his saftey more than the punk who's trying to rob him and rightfully so. If Wilson's a gun nut, we need more like him.

I would prefer income taxes and property taxes. With those taxes at least you can write them off your federal income taxes. You don't get to write off sales taxes, so I prefer the way things are done in Oregon and would not change it.
I realize you're in Oregon, but the rest of us now have the option of deducting EITHER state sales OR state income taxes. For states like Washington where there is no income tax, it's a no brainer which to choose. Still, it's overly complicated. You can't deduct your sales tax unless you itemize, so taking the standard deduction is sometimes better.

Yes, but when you tell MS Office to change the default paper to A4, does it do it? In OOo, you set the default, it looks like you did it right, then when you open a new document it's back to A4.

To change it, you have to create a new document, save that as a template after making all the changes you need, THEN set that as the default template.

Shouldn't the defaults be easier to change? I know their reasoning is to prevent morons from mucking up the settings, but it would be better to have a "original defaults" button instead of forcing a kludged up workaround on everyone.

As far as dates go, I can see why each point works. Small, medium, large does make sense, but if you only put down one bit plus year, you get either (15th, 2005) or (January, 2005). Which of those two is more specific? Anyway, it would be nice if everyone had standards for paper that we could agree on. I wouldn't mind moving to metric, but people just don't want to change.
