Regardless, what he did say was a stupid thing to say in retrospect. Diarrhea of the mouth I suppose.

If I had been his adviser I would have suggested something a little more tactful and less boastful, that still would have gotten the point across. "I was intimately involved with the development of the Internet during my days in Congress." ...sounds about right.

Gore failed the test in any event. He placed his foot in his mouth too often to win the election and in the aftermath. He knew he was a political corpse and got himself out of the way this time around. I have to admire him for that. It would have been too easy for him to emulate William Jennings Bryan or Adlai Stevenson and try again and again to win.

Incidentally, when the hysterical left-wing press talks about Republicans starving school children by cutting school lunch programs, or taking away senior citizens' Social Security, do you have the same beef?

Media obfuscation of issues is like a bank error. I suppose most would only complain when it isn't in their favor.

A quick story, if you don't mind.

In 1994 or 1995 I was late with my income taxes. I had never been late before. I was really freaking out - it was after midnight on April 15 and I was just getting done with the forms. I called my dad, woke him up, said "hey, can I use your postal meter to backdate this to April 15?" (he had a Pitney Bowes machine for his business). His reply was: ", how many people file income tax returns? 150 million? How many of them are on time? Obviously not all of them. Do you think the IRS has the resources to track down every person who ever mailed their taxes in on April 16? I can't believe that in 25 years of raising you, you haven't learned that yet". He hung up with a loud click. Suitably abashed, I put a stamp on it and sent it the next morning.

Nothing further heard about it, obviously. The government is so laxidasical about enforcement of regulations and laws that in most cases you can get away with just about anything, unless you generate the wrong kind of attention and they choose to make an example out of you. The trick is to live a quiet life and not draw attention, as the Mafia well knows. The common person believes in law enforcement because of those big cases that they see in the news, and that the district attorneys announce. It isn't because of any reality of assured punishment.

My dad wiped the naivete out of me that day. Maybe his words can help someone else too.

UT + Radeon (of any stripe, i've tried 7000, 7500, 8500, and 9000) runs like crap. Takes a year and a day to get up and running and don't even try to alt-tab away - reallocating the screen takes about a minute or so. 436 and some of the other latest releases aren't so bad, but earlier ones would really punt badly.

UT also runs like shit on ATI Rage based boards. If you try to flip away it comes up with a DirectX error. Also, there are a lot of frame rate stalls and general slowness.

Runs great on a Voodoo 3 though!

    You are too optimistic.

The sheeple will accept whatever dish the government hands out to them on this. This is why such issues are so maddening. Sure, people will die over some things, but the latest Eminem tune is not one of them.

Technology may offer loopholes, but the governments of the world do not, really. The industry barons come to the politicians with stuff like "This is costing jobs, and hurting my profitability. Fix it." and the politicians respond. Why do they respond? Because republics are like that. The lawmakers are beholden to get reelected, which means bringing the pork back home. Whatever it takes, whatever harm befalls the many, as long as it keeps jobs, keeps the money flowing, they'll do it.

We lost this one in the governmental circles. It is _not_ going to be rolled back until the issue is irrelevant anyway. Too much money is involved. However, technology will keep the whole filesharing thing alive.

You need a dollop of cynicism to go with your idealism.

I used to buy just about every good looking game that came out. Now I buy only bargain bin titles that I know are good.

Why? I don't want to fight through the bugs. Even Diablo (1) was horrible due to this - it crashed incessantly at first, and things haven't gotten much better. Unreal Tournament really sucked in this regard. Generally I just go looking for the patch for X game because you know there is going to be one.

When the games are this buggy, and obviously unplaytested (otherwise, why the bugs?) then it's small wonder the gameplay blows in most cases.

The US military's computers are not outdated overall. However, _field_ systems do not reach end of life until they are replaced by another system, and aren't 'fielded' until long after development. This assures that we have lots of obsolescent and just plain old computers doing various tasks for the actual combat troops. That doesn't mean they aren't suited to their tasks, but it does mean that they are hard to integrate into other systems. No ports, in other words. The word used for these programs is 'stovepipe', entirely vertical, no integration. The military is trying to get rid of that kind of stuff, integrating systems together early on in their lifecycle. But there are lots of 20 and 30 year old systems still in use out there, so it'll be when i'm an old man that that problem is gone.

The general purpose SBU (sensitive but unclassified) gear you see on military public web sites is nothing you haven't seen before. Dells, Compaqs, etc., modern vintage stuff. The switches and routers and such are all modern stuff in general. Desktop machines come in waves but are less than 3 years old in many cases.
