  1. Know history and follow the money on Eric Schmidt: Google Glass Critics 'Afraid of Change,' Society Will Adapt · · Score: 1

Two somewhat obvious topics: Know Your History and always Follow the Money.

I won't regurgitate my previous post which basically boils down to Eric trolling for greenbacks. He was saying somewhat controversial things to garner attention via trolling in order to prop up his company and to sell his book(s). That's the follow the money aspect.

Know Your History a.k.a. History Repeats Itself

This is my opinion going by their history: Google Glass will flop and flop hard. Not on it's own merits, but by these simple facts that have been proven time and time again. 1. Google cannot sell hardware to save it's life. For whatever reason, they are completely incompetent in this regard. 2. They bore easily or have no long term vision other that being the ad agency that they are. Their path is strewn with cancelled products and services. The vast majority of their offerings just taper off and die with a whimper. 3. Glass will never be palatable to the masses because Google is utterly incapable of finishing what they started. They know how to go the distance until they hit, say, 90% completion, and then lose interest and drive. The new shiny wears off and they move on.

Just be thankful that Glass is not an Apple product. You may hate Apple, but you have to admire them for their ability to sell ice-water to Eskimos. As opposed to Google, who seemingly couldn't sell ice-water in Hell. If this were an Apple product, Slashdot would pan it and within 5-10 years, every hipster, teeny-bopper and soccer-mom would be wearing them.

  2. Eric Schmidt is correct, and a genius... on Eric Schmidt: Google Glass Critics 'Afraid of Change,' Society Will Adapt · · Score: 1

First off, I apologize for the subject line; I'm using Schmidt's technique to get you to read my post. Just hear me out.

Much like a headline is a troll to get you to read the article, Eric's technique is to piss you off to get your attention, so you listen to what he has to say and discuss it, thereby spreading his tripe. You are being emotionally manipulated by this little troll into discussing his companies goods and services.

Proof that this technique works and works well? John Dvorak. That's right. After all of these years I can still see his photograph in my mind, I still remember his name but, for the life of me, could not tell you the name of one other writer that worked for PC Magazine. Why? Because he was (and presumably still is) a Grand Master Troll. And it served him well in terms of readership.

So how do you deal with this type of person? The first step is to realize that Schmidt is not a "tech-y" person, but merely a mouthpiece for whatever he happens to be selling. He is an ad. He manipulates you on an emotional level. He is an entertainer, if you will. But once you realize these facts, he becomes almost comical.

I'll compare Schmidt to another entertainer who I consider a comedian: Bill O'Reilly. Man, Bill used to get under my skin; I would allow him to just piss me off, and I would get *so* angry and upset. I actually *hated* this person, and I don't even know him. Then one day it dawned on me: that was his whole point! O'Reilly intentionally performs this act to get attention. He doesn't believe a word he is saying, because he is an actor working from a script and perhaps improvising a bit as well. And he is very good. Bill performs his act to get attention drawn to himself, to make his name popular, so he can sell books. Full stop. Period. End of story.

These days, I see Bill as the troll satirist and comedian that he is: when I need a pick-me-up when I'm feeling down, I'll sometimes watch his show just to laugh my ass off. Honestly, I think the man is really, really funny. It's all a matter of taste and perspective, and no, I don't agree with just about anything he says, but you have to admit that he's really, REALLY good as his craft, which is advertising via trolling.

So know this: Eric Schmidt most likely doesn't believe a lot of the things he says, he's just a-trolling. And look: he's selling books! Just like O'Reilly and Dvorak.

This event, the recent AP Twitter hack and the inevitable upcoming hacks lead me to believe someone (or some organization) has an axe to grind, and is quite effectively showing Twitter to be a completely unreliable source of information. Which it is, of course.

Several more of these, and "news" organizations will cease to use Twitter as a source (a good thing IMO), followed by the Twits or Twats or whatever you call Twitter users.

I beg to differ. I just spent a week there visiting my dad and was surprised with the diverse range of people in the area. It is definitely crawling with hillbillies. Mullets and Pick-em-ups (trucks); I thought I was back home in the Carolinas for a second!

Anyway, now that I know there's a local LUG, I'll have to check it out next time I'm in that area (which is beautiful, BTW).

There are tons of small businesses in the Ft. Myers area, which are perfect for a small IT shop to service. In another life, I worked for a similar operation and rolled out many a SAMBA server for small businesses. They didn't care that it was Linux, they just cared that they didn't have to pay for the OS or CALs. There's plenty of money to be made in this type of business, and it's really no secret. Like anything else, it all comes down to your ability to sell; the product and service are secondary.

Why is it vitriol? This guy's software is *shit*; pure, unadulterated shit. The only thing more fucked up than the shit he releases is that it's getting picked up by some distros. And for what? What problem does systemd solve? Ooh, can we boot faster? Who fucking cares? Who the hell turns off a computer in this day and age? It's a pure ripoff of Apple's (shitty) launchd. This stuff is replacing decades-proven systems, overcomplicating things, and for what? Either for the sake of change, or to mimic Apple.

This is a disturbing trend in open source software that will drive users away. I know nobody gives a shit, but this kind of trash software development will do further damage to Linux distros and drive technical users to *BSD or other platforms IMO. What happened to simplicity?

Guys (and gals), there is a point when some piece of software is feature-complete. The only reason most dev's add features to finished software is because that is what paying customers demand. But you don't have paying customers. You don't need to keep adding shit to your software. Finish it and move into maintenence mode and start a new project.

No I'm not trolling today, I'm just very passionate about this subject, and hate to see the damage it's doing to the Linux ecosystem. I'm just waiting for a registry-type system to be implemented by this asshole.

And Lennart: PLEASE, fuck off and die. Seriously. Now go ahead: mod me down ya' spineless cowards.

  19. NC has these Sweepstakes places as well on Florida House Passes Bill To Ban "Internet Cafes" · · Score: 5, Informative

First time I was in one, I couldn't believe it was legal. But by careful observation of the operation, it was clear that they were exploiting loopholes, and the verbiage they use to do this is quite amusing. It's not gambling, they're "sweepstakes". You don't "cash out", you "redeem your sweepstakes prizes/winnings/internet minutes/whatever". It's not video poker, it's "video sweepstakes". Etc, etc. This is how these places work:

They are typically located in strip mall type buildings, and will be called Internet Cafe, Business center, Sweepstakes etc. You walk in, and it's basically a large room with say 50 PCs running XP on a LAN, and there's a manned booth (or atm type device) where you can deposit $ into your account. Say we go to the counter and give the attendant $20 for our account number 123456. Got to a PC, log into it w/your account# 123456, and you have a screen showing various things you can do: Internet browsing, blah, blah, blah, and Sweepstakes. So you have "credits" (or "internet minutes") in your account now: the $20.00 we deposited is 2000 credits (or minutes or whatever euphemism).

The games are basically flash games w/casino themes: all types of slot machine types, keno, w/all kinds of goofy themes, running full screen on the PC, kiosk style. There's mini-games to keep you hooked (break up the monotony of click, spin, click, spin). The mini game will always give you $2.00 to say $50.00, and the player immediately has this credited to their account, and inevitably loses it shortly thereafter.

So they're basically slot machines where you gamble "credits" as I like to call them, but that would be illegal. So they call them sweepstakes machines where you play for "internet minutes" which can be "redeemed" (never cashed out!) for dollars.

NC has tried a couple times to ban these establishments, but they just switch out the games and call them something else, say play for phone card minutes, and they just keep going. It's just a matter of time before they get forced out by the state though. It's inevitable; we can't have those "educational" lotto dollars being spent elsewhere, now can we? ;)
