    This whole "sudden acceleration" issue is a non-issue (or at least it should be a bug, but not a horrible death trap) if people just had functioning brains; as the parent said: "PUT THE DAMN CAR IN N and PRESS THE BREAKS" and all should come to a stop. I guess that too many cheeseburgers with super-sized fries have finally shown their effects in people's brains...

    ... to all the people who have education problems in other countries? I think we should: all afghani girls who for years could not go to school (did we give asylum to all that requested?), all the africans who cannot go to school because of social problems (did we give asylum to all that requested?), etc. Clearly shows how racist and politically biased the courts are: a group of (likely) right wing white people always get precedence over some poor 3rd world, brown-skinned, poor fellow...

    Where did you get that??? Case in point: a significant portion of cars in Brasil are ethanol-based. Not from corn but from sugar cane. This started in the late-70's and is still going strong.

    It will take exactly 1 week for this to happen... Not to worry. In any case, I'd strongly recommend voting with your wallet away from such an intrusive and stupid system. Unless it is really free, in which case: please get as many devices as you can and then jailbreak them or simply use them as paperweights. This would teach them a lesson :-)

    And I pay $100/year for t-mobile to go. This is good for 1000 minutes (I usually use about 700/yr). I have two of these accounts (one is an unlocked iphone the other is a cheap $20 nokia that I take to places where the iphone could get lost/damaged--e.g. river rafting). I really do not see why anybody puts up to these crazy $100+/month charges.

    By the same token: why are my taxes paying for a war I do not care for? Why are my taxes paying for oversized prisons I do not care for? Why are my taxes prosecuting minor offenses I find non-offensible? Why, why, why? You know: when you live in a society you have to pay things you do not like and things you do like. Society decided children's education is a value on itself, and hence society (including you) are in charge (partly) to pay for it. Society (to my dismay) loves war and big jails ("we're tough on crime BS") and I have to pay for it too. You (and I) can either (i) oppose this through the political process, (ii) start a revolution to change it, or (iii) move to a deserted island and live without others imposing rules on you (good luck!). That's just life... Deal with it!

    Wow, you're basically describing my setup! Apple mac mini bought of craigslist for $200 (core 2 duo 1.83 GHz, 2 GB Ram, 80 GB HD---soon to be upgraded to 1TB when I have time), plus bluetooth kbd and mouse (both use standard AA batteries), and elgato eyetv hybrid ATSC tuner. Nice setup!!!

    Indeed, I have a 2650 DTN and it has one of these dreadful chipped cartridges. Even when you know they are still full of toner the damned thing refuses to print. I will NEVER buy an HP Laser printer again. BTW: anyone knows of a webpage that lists color laser printers that are not "chipped"?

    I completely agree. The "ribbon" is the most stupid piece of "innovation" I've seen in a while. I guess it goes along with the stupidization of the masses... The ribbon is one of the causes that I still keep office 2003 along with 2007 and avoid 2007 whenever I can (the other reasons is that 2007 is slow as a turtle compared to 2003, and that Excel 2007 cannot cope with a table of ca. 2000 lines x 5 columns, whereas 2003 can---way to go micro$oft!!!).

    Look, I *am* a University physics professor. I could not care less which book you used, as long as you used one. The new editions usually account to a bit more than reordering the problems so that HW problem 6.11 is now 6.12 and 6.12 becomes 6.9... Get an old book for studying and go to the library and photocopy the problem sets only from the new book. All is then solved and you help crack the publisher's scam.

    And I insist, if the place is not under the jurisdiction of the US Constitution, then neither it is under the DHS (or any other US agency). Either the place is in the US (and the Constitution holds) or the place is out of the US (and then no US agency has legal authority for anything).

    Look, you are either inside the U.S.A. (in which case the constitution holds) or outside (in which case the government has no jurisdiction). The fact that the SOCUS has decided that there are regions within the US where the constitution does not hold should be grounds for impeachment of the court.

    I have 2 iphones. None of them on ATT (both on t-mobile prepaid). I would have NEVER gotten to be an ATT customer at "$90 a month" since I pay $100/yr on each phone. Don't need more. ATT never really lost that line of revenue (well, they did loose the $200/yr, if they had a decent prepaid plan and if they were not accomplices to the NSA illegal wiretapping).

    Indeed, and so much for apple's assertion that the jailbroken iphones are insecure (putting it mildly)... I bet the jailbroken iphones will get a patch (through cydia) within a week of the exploit being published vs. months for the official patch. Pffff to apple, they look more and more like micro$oft.

    Exactly my thoughts. If the iphone is so damn dangerous, then apple should be forced to recall all of them off the market. There can be no double standards here: if the device is bad for the networks then the device should not be approved. If the device is OK (and it certainly is) then stop bitching when people do what they want with the device they OWN.

    Indeed, about 70-80% of the chemical energy in your gas is transformed into heat that goes out through the radiator, tailpipe, etc (this is due to the 2nd law of thermodynamics, if you want to put it that way). Only 20-30% is available as mechanical energy to the wheels (eventually all is lost to heat, through friction with air, inside the tires, and in the breaks when stopping).
