No kidding. Who cares if it runs Linux? Just buy a Mac and run OS X. It's 100 times better than Linux and you don't have to worry about whether it'll support your hardware. Plus, there's even software and games you can buy for it. It's a nice middle ground between the high end (Windows) and the low end (OS/2, FreeBSD, Linux).

Problem solved, no support issues. If someone gets a virus and is running Win98 then disconnect them from the network and bring them up for academic dismissal for violating the school's policy.

Actually according to an article I read that's exactly what they're doing. Not strip searches, but wanding people down, going through metal detectors, using night vision goggles by security staff to look for camcorders, etc. It's just nuts. I'm not saying that because I pirate movies with a video camera at movie theaters, but I'm saying it because I'm sick and tired of being treated like a criminal everywhere I go. I go to the airport and am guilty until I prove my innocence by subjecting myself to their metal detectors, x-ray machines, bag searches, etc. Now I have to put up with this shit at a movie theater? It's amazing these people still wonder why they're losing money and people are just staying home.

Without good tech support people will just go elsewhere. You WILL get people calling you that don't understand how to plug in their color-coded cables or even how to turn it on even though it's clearly explained in a 3 foot by 3 foot fold out poster in very simple pictographs. This isn't 1990 when most of the people using computers were either businesses with support personnel or very techie home users who were used to dealing with DOS and drivers, boot disks, config.sys, etc. The majority of people today using computers are complete and utter morons. That is the problem with success: Once you've exhausted your techie base you're left with the common cattle to support your profit margins.

I asked him why he didn't just force it to refresh the listings right then and there and he said it didn't even have an ethernet connection. Get this, these things dial up over an antiquated modem connection to get their listings. There's also no way to offload shows that you've recorded once the paltry "35 hours" of storage is used up. On top of it all, the program guide was abysmally slow to scroll. Perhaps it's a limitation of DirecTV rather than TiVo so I won't hold that against them, but my digital cable box scrolls much faster. Anyway, I went over there to evaluate whether it was worth me looking into a similar setup and I came away laughing at it. I'll stick with my MythTV dual tuner system and digital cable.
