There are already laws in a number of states in regards to alcohol consumption, drugs use, viewing of pornography and physical abuse. It seems a line is already being drawn, doesnt it? Not, of course, that *having* the laws means they will be applied all the time, or even that it makes a big difference in someones behavior in every case just because it's illegal.
I looked at porn when I was a kid, i have an aversion to drugs and excessive amounts of alcohol, and would probbly never hurt anyone unless they attacked me first. In fact id certainly never hurt anyone except in self-defense.
My parents brought me up to look low on drugs and heavy alcohol use (a glass of wine or a drink in the evenings is another thing entirely) and I decided on my own that violence is a terrible thing. But i played many violent games and have seen many violent movies; i was brought up to know the difference between reality and fiction, so the violence ive seen hasnt affected me. Yeah, i looked at porn. Youd be hard put to find a boy that didnt, and I dont feel that its ever affected me negatively, but it was techincally illegal.
So, a line is drawn in some places already. You should have known that, why ask the question the way you did? Whats important is your first question. Yes, parents have the right to decide whats appropriate for their kids, but if what they or their children do is illegal, they'll get caught at some point and have to face the law. Otherwise, if its not illegal, its probably fair game.
Some parents wouldnt agree with how you were raised, some wouldnt agree with how I was raised. Tough, our parents had a right to do it how they wished and this is how we turned out. Alcohol, drug and physical abuse hurt other people, thats why its illegal, thats why its wrong. Pornography is arguable by some, i suppose, but i consider it on another level from the above entirely. Society shouldnt have a say in what my kids watch, listen to, or play if its possible for it all to be taken in without hurting anyone.
I listened to outrageous music, watched television and movies with sexual overtones, and played alot of violent games. Im not a bad guy, have never hurt anyone, abused any substances, or been to jail for anything. I turned out ok, and so will my 2 kids, because *im* going to watch them and be responsible for them.

Anecdotal evidence (which is all I have) is that only a minority of parents exercise enforcement of age ratings. And children who are not allowed to buy adult games can still get hold of the games by borrowing them from a friend, playing them at a friend's house, etc.
Which brings us to another point which is that the parents should be paying attention what their children are playing, watching, and listening to. My manager at work has a 13 year old son who has a playstation 2 and an xbox. She keeps an eye on him, however, and after she got home from work one day she allowed her son to have a friend over.
As it turned out, his friend brought over GTA: Vice City. So his mother is walking around the house cleaning up and hears them say something about some "titties". I havent played the game, appearently there are strip clubs in it...but she took the game away and told the *other* kids parents, to keep HER sone from playing the game, and to make sure the other childs parents knew what was in it.
This is how its supposed to work. Its bad enough when parents by mature rated games for their kids without thought, its worse when they dont pay attention to what their children are playing or doing. My manager doesnt allow the consoles to babysit her kids and actively watches what they do when they play games, get online, watch tv and movies or listen to music, and if she doesnt approve of something *SHE* stops them from doing it.
Kids will always, always, always want to be entertained by content more mature than they should be enjoying. Violent games and movies, skin mags and music videos with dancing scantily-clad women, or music and tv with language they probably shouldnt be familiar with at such a young age. THIS IS NORMAL. Hell, I remember wanting to check out some playboys when i was 11, watch the predator when i was 7, and listen to music full of harsh language when i was 13.
Its still the parents job to make sure they approve of what their kid is doing, and to stop them when they dont. My parents didnt watch me, so I did most of what I wanted. When they complained, i pointed this out to them. Mom, you werent around to keep tabs on me, and shes not happy with the way i grew up. She gets to deal with it because she slacked-off as a mother. So will others, and no amount of bitching about ratings and what kids can or cant buy is going to change that parents have to be responsible and watch their kids *themselves*
because its entertaining, and afterwards they think they suddenly know all about some important issue or topic that was described in a 2-minute clip. start to give them the details and well....theres just not that many people that tune into cspan regularly for a reason: its dull and requires actual *thought* to understand whats going on. people are busy, they dont care *that much* about issues that they dont encounter on a daily basis in their personal lives, they just find it entertaining *enough* to watch while they much on a hot pocket or do the kids' laundry.
its *because* people dont want to keep up with the minute details of issues and topics that we have these news briefs. its also why we have elected officials who get to keep up with the boring details so we dont have to because we have other things to do.
i didnt realize 80mb constituted mammoth any longer. many many people have broadband now, its still doable over dial-up (indeed, i downloaded much larger files than 80mb when i was on dial-up) it will fit more than easily on cd's or flash drives....im just not seeing 80mb as mammoth any longer.
that stands for alot of people, but not necessarily everyone. i was reading an interesting book, mostly for the hell of it, some months ago. i think it was called "the science of god" or some such, i dont have time to look it up right now.
the author basically tries to reconcile the bible and big bang/evolutionary theory. im not taking any of it as certain, it was just an interesting read. when he gets to the part about the creation of man and evolution, he goes into where the hebrew translation could have allowed for there to have been many, many humans at the point adam and eve were "created" where basically he says god picked 2 of these early humans and gave them "souls" some several thousand years ago: hence the rise of civilization about that time: according to the author.
its interesting, not particularly compelling perhaps, but all sorts of people have different points of view on the subject. theres the very literal interpretation of genesis youre taking, and theres non-literal views that allow for evolution to be a part of gods plan.
im personally agnostic, and dont particularly care how we got here or why, but more what im having for dinner tonight.
The thing is, honestly, that they left those things out so that they could tout a $500 gaming machine as something worth reading so they could attract traffic to their website. A number of hardware sites have been doing rigs for years at multiple levels, especially budget machines, but i dont recall any of them leaving out necessary parts or accessories so they could use the "sub-$500 gaming rig" headline in an attempt to attract traffic to their site.
Toms did, and now slashdot has directed traffic to them. I dont recall seeing an update on the front page of/. last time ArsTechnica or Anandtech put up budget rigs, which anyone with some common sense could easily look at and say "oh i dont need a new case or monitor for this, ill spend even less on a budget rig!" just so they could attract traffic.
you seem kind of confused. the controversy comes from the fact that science has disproved many claims and suppositions about the universe (including claims about the word of god himself) that have historically been peddled by religious doctrineers. for example: that demons cause sickness, that sin causes sickness
my parents still believe that one, and my mother thinks that demons are responsible for minor mental disorders based on whether or not theyre trying to live for christ (whatever that means).
examples: shes certain my father may have OCD (if she knew better, shed realize what his personality is, is closer to OCPD, which is rather different) and some mild form of ADD. she believes medication could help him with both problems.
on the other hand, a woman who is currently my wife used to live in oklahoma (Ive always lived in north carolina) and when she moved here and we met, she had recently been going throug *alot* of problems with her family: her mother could almost certainly be defined as manic-depressive the way i understand it. Anyway, were married now, and when we met, my wife got *very* stressed out and had some awful mood swings. My mother was certain it was the work of demons and that counseling and medication would never help, but that prayer and deliverance would.
im certain my mother is slightly nuts. probably more than slightly, but shes generally harmless and always narrow-minded so i dont bother her too much.
and thats why i bought a 19" diamondtron last year when my 17" dell CRT stopped working. i gamed heavily at the time and loved it. $300 for a great picture; weight be damned, i dont have some silly need to move my monitor after its on the desk, and have plenty of deskspace to use it.
are you kidding? you make a banned-name list and run all new names through it. if you get a match, the names no good. guild wars does this: try to use "Jesus" in your character name and you immediately get told you cant use the names of any religious figures or some such. seriously, its not hard. if they didnt want people named Cmdr, Lt, Gen, PeterGriffin, GeorgeBush, et cetera then all they needed to do was make a list of names you cant use beforehand.
blizzard makes this huge massive game, and you think it would cost them that much extra to make a list of names players CAN NOT use?
I thought UPS had a number of special fuel-efficient vehicles in their fleet. more info here
in fact, it says they have 1700 alternative fuel vehicles and are concerned about doing more to improve efficiency. i was surprised to have learned this a few months ago. it makes obvious business sense for them; what surprised me is that id never heard it before or seen it advertised.
im a drycleaner and im here to tell you that using excessive amounts of bleach is going to cause any fabrics to wear out faster. use whatever amount the directions on the bottle tell you to, and be sure to rinse thoroughly after bleaching anything. hot water boosts the strength of bleaches, though if you prefer, a lukewarm or cool soak can be effective (though not always to the same extent), but will require a longer bath before rinsing to do the job.
my math education was pitiful, and right now, i could probably just barely make it through algrebra 1 or geometry. i havent done any in 5 years, and what i had learned wasnt significant.
i remember having one, just one, math teacher in the high school that was not only more than qualified to teach the subject, but was a damn fine teacher and not a stickler to certain procedure. he also taught chemistry, which i was in, but having not been in his math classes, i didnt do very well.
the math teachers i DID have, did indeed mostly encourage following a set procedure to get a right answer. i dont remember what exactly it was, but some low level algebra i believe, where i used a method not in the books to solve the problems faster, easier and with noticably less work than through the method the book had used. i failed a test once because of this, not that the answers were wrong, just my methodology.
a similar teacher made us write her long-winded history notes verbatim, which may have been useful for some of the students, but i had the highest grade in the class and no need to study, and used my own shorthand whenever possible, and usually got in some kind of trouble for it. a shame, that teachers dont do so much teaching, as they do reciting.
over the last several thousand years, people have yet to be aware that blindly trusting anything anonymous is just plain stupid. people believe all sorts of stupid things, and will continue to do so; i should hardly expect otherwise and i think youre setting yourself up for disappointment by doing so yourself.
for me, its size. i havent had a portable gaming system in some time, and one of the reasons wasnt price so much as...well...bulk. i hate bulky things, im clumsy and prone to forget or drop anything i cant easily fit in a pocket.
i think, when you broadcast it over radio waves its no longer called podcasting.....but rather, "radio". ;)

this would answer a number of questions, such as: why is this planet so fucked up? or, why did steve gutenberg have a career?

because in 10,000 years aliens landing here will need to be told where those 5 planets are: just in case.

he clearly said "tah!"

hi, were fancy machine-stealing microbial monsters, we steal fancy machines for profit. step 1 : steal fancy machine step 2: ??? step 3: profit!
this will solve that problem :)
eh....i want a harem *now*
id sooner watch showgirls than Alexander, which also had tits...though it had fewer tits, than guys giving each other the naughty-eye
