If business users were less shortsighted, Kay says, they would seek to create computer models of their companies and constantly simulate potential changes.
Alan Kay is definitely overrating users. I go through great efforts
in trying to present concepts and to abstract a technical issue in
a way which is logical to business. Both IT and business people I deal with
want to talk about databases, files and web GUIs in stead of discussing the
problem to be solved at a higher abstraction level.
I think the required levels of knowledge and ability to abstract problems
in order to to create computer models of companies is currently found
in universities and in businesses that encourage academic thinking. It will
take a very long time for this awareness to seep through to the common business.
Linux acceptance will have
grown sky high, Linux on the workplace will be feasible, Linux
distributions will fit the needs of the man in the street and the MS Windows
growth will actually be negative.
The base on which this reasoning is made is identical to Microsoft's.
I know this is a geek site but you'd reach more readers if you'd provide
a conclusion or a purpose for your number number crunching. You'd impress
an employer/manager with a "management summary".
I fail to see the news component in this article. You don't need to be a
rocket scientist to make this work and there are dozens of people on Usenet
groups and various forums that are more than willing to help you out. Try
those for a directer communication.
You also might realize that the time spent on this exercise is probably better
invested in playing the harmonica outside your nearest mall. You almost
certainly will be able to raise enough money to buy yourself a used PIII.
I see you never worked with IBM mainframe specialists. A significant amount of these guys still think Unix is a toy and any other coding than EBCDIC is just too complex and will never reach a significant acceptance level.
(That's kinda logic considering that most IBM mainframe related jobs are highly overrated [you get too much dough] and are usually done on a side note in a *nix environment. You [well, they] just start thinking what you do is fine, that you don't need to evolve any further and that IBM will be your savor eventually. )
the non-cheapskates among us should go buy the CD-set to support the project
By that I'd pay for:
The packaging (materials and handling)
The delivery
Possibly the store which almost certainly will NOT give any support.
I don't want to cut out the middle man for the sake of it but in small distros (currently all linux distros can be considered small compared to windows) the delivery overhead is out of proportion. Most people involved in the deal will make much more money out of the deal than Slackware themselves.
I also think the resources in this process are almost completely wasted.
I recall wanting to buy a copy of Tux Racer. The retail price here in Europe was way above what I wanted to pay for it. The retail price in USA was better but shipping amounted to US$20. So emailed the Tux Racer guys telling them I don't need the box and the manual. I also told them that I'd be happy to pay them full price if I could download the game. That was useless because it didn't change anything at all. They probably thought I was crazy.
When possible I try paying the people/bodies that make/package/service my software directly. And I do!!
Hey guys, I hate to bring this to you, but don't you ever read the subject lines before posting?
I actually know the answers to most questions ( that is, except for the Anna Kournikova one ). This posting was intended to be "Funny" but I guess I tried too hard.
Why not one flat file and NDB? That'd do for scoring a couple of matches.
Why not Oracle? It's better and less pain then DB2.
Did IBM have Playstation 2 systems in 1999?
Where did the fun go? When Commentators are fed a screen full of statistics!!
Will they serve pictures of of Anna Kournikova?
Protect yourself from the dangers of the Internet!

In an exclusive course offered only to you which will cost you a mere US$ 5. And yes, for as little as US$ 18.99 you'll even get an penis enlarger which you can carry in your handbag.
In italian SEGA means saw. "Farsi una SEGA" translated literally is "to do oneself a saw". To us folks a minor leap brings us to "to choke one's chicken", "to spank one's monkey", "to beat one's bishop", etc...
With a buddy of mine I once tried imitating McDonald's sauce and we
actually got pretty near to the McDonald taste.
I noticed that the taste of the fresh herbs (basil was an important ingredient)
we used wore after a while. That means, McDonald's way of stabilizing the taste
is very likely well studied and they deserve credit for that.
We went on and we "discovered" that almost any mayonnaise based sauce
with fresh herbs can be brought to a decent taste. If you stick with it and
study it further, you are most likely to get a much better tasting sauce but
with a lower taste ware half-time than McDonald's.
You also might discover that the main ingredient in McDonald's sauce is the
big trivial secret around it.
Then again, in my two visits to north America I got the definite impression
that north Americans see food as a resource and put less emphasis on taste
and enjoyment. So if you are north American you probably won't discover
anything.
I once baked an Italian home made pizza ( yes, I am Italian and I have been
a very decent professional pizza baker when I was studying. I take food
more serious than most/.-ers ) for my sister in law in Canada. Man the thing came steaming out of the oven but she fancied anyway a quick microwave
"ZAP" to get it to the right point. I have never ever been more
astonished in my whole life.

Or is it just a bundle with a zero priced OS. Thanks to the BSA, shipping an OS with a PC is mandatory in some parts of the world.
I expect the MS Windows peak will occur in 2010.

might be due to something a DBA has done
Lemme guess. You're a DBA and you've had a hard time with your boss lately.
Passoni has leading edge technology bikes.
All frames are custom made out of titanium and/or carbon fiber. These guys actually bend titanium sheets themselves to make the pipes for the frames.
I actually own one of their racing bikes.
I am going to want DVD quality
Would divx be DVD quality ( at CD size )?

So I'd either look like your image or transparent.

The MS code would probably get debugged.
Think of the benefits of:
I must elaborate this concept and make a bed time fairy tale for my kids out of it titled "The bully that decided to share toys" .
Not because I dislike ogg ( au contrair mon frere ) but because I cannot handle false hope. And someone has to touch the ogg subject.
Yes!
Everyone knows how to read or write it.

Will we need to install electric shields around the heart region if we refuse to pay MS tax?

Lisa Gade provides the typically in-depth review, with pictures and words "and everything".
/.-ers out there are wondering about Lisa's "and everythings".

But stop calling McDonalds's quick & dirty energy salons "restaurants".
It's like saying "the MS-DOS operating system". Clueless people like it that way and all others.... Oh forget it
Yeah, what's wrong with dd(1)?
