You could always just get a 6gb mini for $220 (scroll down). Or a 3d gen ipod 15gb for $190 -- that's what I did with the intention of puting linux on it (3d gen works, 4th isn't so hot right now), except it's such a great player, I ended up ripping every CD I own. It looks and behaves brand new BTW so either it is actually an unsold new device, or Apple's refurbishing is really good.

While I agree that war in Iraq is an utter waste of resources and a complete subversion of all good sense, I also think that New Orleans' issue is primarily a local issue. Why should people who live in relatively safer areas, subsidize the choices people who live in NO have made? I've never been in the south and I even I've heard that NO is below sea level -- surely the locals were very aware of their situation. What stopped them from raising taxes to pay for the needed protective measures? If the the local taxes were so astronomical as to make it financially impossible to build there ... well isn't that a clue? Hiding the costs by shifting them to non-locals merely encourages local behavior that meshes poorly with the environment.

Anyway, my point is that economics can sometimes point to behaviors that are environmentally unwise. I'm all for helping people relocate and get back on their feet. By the same token, the money will just go down the drain if it is used to rebuild in the same spot. People want to do that, fine it's their business and their dime. Just don't take that dime to do stupid things from me.

So true. Now, there are some things about OSX I have a legitimate beef with, but there are also some things that were all about me applying the wrong knowledge. For example, when I got mine, the first thing I wanted to do was get rid of some icons on the doc. I did a right-click, no clues. I did a left-click hold, no clues. Middle-click -- nada. I started googling ...

I was getting ticked off - this was supposed to be an easy system. Anyway, after a couple hours I had identified the text file that defines the dock -- getting rid of icons was easy: just delete sections. Adding them in was a bit harder because of some apparently necessary gibberish looking section. I couldn't understand why Apple made it so darn hard to modify the dock .... At one point during my search, my mouse slipped and I accidentally dragged one of the icons off the dock - it went POOF. Well, I felt like an idiot!

The other day I stopped into the local Apple store to poke around and I saw that they had 3g 15gb ipods for sale at $199. These include a dock and a wallwart charger (headphones, beltclip, and sync cable of course). It's a refurbished one (Apple has these on their website for $189 -- but I like the instant gratifaction of store buying). Anyway, I have a psychological barrier against paying more than $200 for a music player -- so this was perfect. I know the 20gb color model is only $100 more (more like $140 if you throw in the missing dock), but I'm not going to spend that much on music player ... I learned my lesson w/ the nomad. I think it was about $250 (with base 64mbs, another $100 for the memor card) and I don't think I ever got my money's worth out of it.

With the 15gb ipod I will get my money back -- I've copied over all my CDs and I've finally heard old beloved songs I hadn't heard in ages merely because digging through piles of CDs for one good song is such a pain. Anyway, shall I ramble even more? ....

Then, when they want to do their evil and nefarious iChatting, they can simply reboot off the external HD. Circumvents everything, lets the kids explore (while not at school), and the school should be none the wiser for it.

    • the cost of landfills to hold the trash,
    • the environmental costs not paid by the disc manufacturers in producing the discs.

The fact that this confuses some people now is because so many people mistakenly think that "state" is the American term for "province". The intent of the founders was always that these be a federation of independent states

A very astute point. In the paralance of international law, "state" is interchangeable with "nation" or "country". It is also the case that US states have become less and less independent over time though, which has had a subtle effect on us. The US states have lost so much power that it is somewhat natural for Americans to be confused over the real meaning of statehood. We Americans live in a world where "states" are so much less than nations, and so much more like provinces or even counties, that it is hardly surprising to find that people need to be educated on what statehood really means.

Obviously there are good and bad aspects to this -- while CA may run afoul of the feds on medical marijuana, one hopes other states are kept in check in terms of their ultra-conservative tendancies. Or it means every state goes to hell at once, linked arm in arm.
