    Sounds to me like Google is playing the system as it is currently designed to be played - but with a different intent. I hope they continue to file for more and more ridiculous patents until the real patent trolls (or, more importantly, the government) have nothing left but to call for reform.

    We learned a lot about using 5.1 for XP and how that helped developers with version checking for API compatibility. We also had the lesson reinforced when we applied the version number in the Windows Vista code as Windows 6.0-- that changing basic version numbers can cause application compatibility issues.

    So we decided to ship the Windows 7 code as Windows 6.1 - which is what you will see in the actual version of the product in cmd.exe or computer properties.

    If someone was trying to install XP, but didn't have a disk and asked "Well, I got a Windows 95 CD, shouldn't I be able to use that and just update?", they would probably get a lot of weird looks... but the appropriate response would be "No, it isn't like Linux".

    That is not solely a Windows problem, you are comparing a commercial product to a free product. The same could be said about upgrading from MacOS 9 to MacOS X.

    You should try a console system. All of the games include a game disk, box, and an instruction book.

    And to activate it, you must enter the 7th word in the 3rd paragraph on page 4.

    Upon asking their live support why their product sends tracking information to other sites, I received this response:

    iDownload Tech (Mark): iSearch is its own independant company that markets many affiliate programs. I believe they have removal instructions and an automatic removal tool on their FAQ page at isearch.com.     This is a well documented bug and is apparantly fixed in the final version of Firefox. (Copy & Paste link - Bugzilla doesn't like Slashdot, either!) If you're still experiencing this problem, I suggest you look into optimized Moox builds, as he has implemented a fix that has been working great for me. Also, there is an extension that apparantly fixes the problem, as well.

    Half-Life was released 6 years ago (October 31, 1998). If Valve/Steam manages to stick around by then, I don't see any reason why Steam wouldn't support HL2 in another 6 years.
