Um, you can already buy "retail" 4ghz p4 systems from alienware http://www.alienware.com/ALX_pages/choose_alx.asp Also, people regularly overclock 3.6-3.8 ghz p4's to 4.0-4.2.. I am certain that intel will have a 4ghz chip sooner rather than later, however non-oc speeds will probably hang around 4ghz for a while given current technologies.
Please refer to the anandtech "review" of the mac os X computing experience posted on slashdot yesterday. One of the points of the article was that from a power-user standpoint, even a dual 2.5ghz g5 with os x 10.3 did not equal the gui responsiveness of wintel.. That's what we need power for.. Techies in particular (which is what/. caters to) don't like waiting for a widget to redraw while they could be doing something productive with an os.
On the flipside, are there any conservatives willing to go on record saying they don't want people to vote? (especially young people and minorities (racism++)):)
If you look into the technical side of the site, all it's music is actually stores as 384kbit free format mp3s (some decoders like MAD can decode this out-of-spec bitrate).
When you buy music in any other format than 384kbit mp3, it will be REENCODED. Try ripping a track from an original cd, and then downloading the same track from allofmp3.. You WILL be able to hear the difference.
There are some posts about this around.. Also something about them using weird encoder settings which decreases sound quality even more.
I'd only use allofmp3 if you absolutely couldn't find a specific track anywhere else (and didn't feel like buying a cd of filler to get it legally:)
I think he means you don't get an "idle" process running HLT instructions like in linux/windows (meaning the cpu is using a lot of power doing nothing).
They will be using a PS2 CHIP, not an entire PS2 with drive assembly, to drive on screen menus.. IE 3d graphics buzzing around when you want to change the channel:) This is NOT for playing games or dvds.
IMO a very smart move by sony; use the economies of scale for their old-tech, one-chip PS2's to differentiate their other consumer goods.. All LCDS and plasmas are more or less identical anyway, so cabinet design and OSD quality will be key factors in TV purchasing...
That blog post was the most uninformed, narrow-minded, un-helpful piece of drivel I have had the misfortune of reading all (last) week.
It would appear to me that most people who are anti-nuclear-energy|weapons|whatever are also anti-science morons who think with their feelings and not their brains.
As you said yourself, a lot of mp3.com is crap; in fact many "songs" are merely soundbytes, unitelligeble noise, or other material not normally classified as "music", and certainly something no record exec would approve for commercial release...
The thing is you aren't recompiling C for different platforms with a JIT of this kind (JIT is kind of misleading, it should be called a dynarec); you only have binary ppc code which has to be munged into x86 form.. So you get some speedup from not having to read ppc bytes, lookup translation, perform emulation, etc for each cycle, but it's not a miracle method of 1000x performance gain:) That said, X86-64 should really help speed this up, as you said..
The 6800 ultra appears, at least in the benchmarks I read (hardocp and hardwareanalysis) to beat out a radeon 9800xt by 25-50%. I doubt ATI would put out a next-gen card that couldn't beat their own current top of the line card by at least 50%.. So let's wait until their cards are revealed, I for one don't think nVIDIA can expect to be performance king for long:)
Just do a minimal install of 5.03 (without letting it integrate into the shell, etc) and copy the new in_mod.dll from/winamp5dir/plugins to/winamp2.91/plugins..
While you're at it; all the new and updated input plugins (in_mp3, in_midi, etc) seem to work just fine in 2.91.
heard. Typical opensource person who has no contact with the real world... Linux games are in a sorry state, you simply can't get professional quality free content (textures, etc) in the same way as anyone can hack up some db server or whatever (which probably points to a fundemental difference between programming (being "easy" and art, demanding "talent").
Which is why Quake was software rendered, the GLquake you are referring to came along later. (and what about the rendition verite accelerated dos binary)
Commercial quality? You must be joking.. SDL is consistenly laggier, slower and buggier than directx in every discipline. Opensource doesn't work for game[s][-libraries]. It never has and it never will.
prolly are, what with the idiotic trend of outsourcing even r&d, creative are just slapping a bagde on a pre-made player from some asian oem.

I don't think you'll have much success loading an intel binary on a PPC cpu :)
Windows = intel x86. Apple = powerpc. fyi.
Buyer beware!

That was three days ago champ.. Did you expect slashdot to post up-to-the-minute news?
Since one is not taking any "thing" by making a digital copy, how does your preschool knowledge apply?
RTFA (Read the fine article)..

You can create a large ramdisk using programs such as ramdiskNT, onboot, and move your pagefile onto the ramdisk...
By reading the amsat page it seems it cost around 100k usd to launch the probably rather small echo sat...
Yeah, it'll be exactly like that time a human got a virus from a fish.. Oh Wait.. That never happened.
Moron.

Well the statement wouldn't be false if congress didn't pass all kinds of special case laws against the pet hate of the month..
Uhh.. I daresay half-life + mods is vastly more popular than quake3/arena..

No it's not!
A lot more people comprehend simple decimal numbers than your arbitrary latin-alphabet names for the months...
