Um, you can already buy "retail" 4ghz p4 systems from alienware http://www.alienware.com/ALX_pages/choose_alx.asp
Also, people regularly overclock 3.6-3.8 ghz p4's to 4.0-4.2..
I am certain that intel will have a 4ghz chip sooner rather than later, however non-oc speeds will probably hang around 4ghz for a while given current technologies.

Please refer to the anandtech "review" of the mac os X computing experience posted on slashdot yesterday.
One of the points of the article was that from a power-user standpoint, even a dual 2.5ghz g5 with os x 10.3 did not equal the gui responsiveness of wintel..
That's what we need power for..
Techies in particular (which is what /. caters to) don't like waiting for a widget to redraw while they could be doing something productive with an os.

    Buyer beware!

If you look into the technical side of the site, all it's music is actually stores as 384kbit free format mp3s (some decoders like MAD can decode this out-of-spec bitrate).

When you buy music in any other format than 384kbit mp3, it will be REENCODED.
Try ripping a track from an original cd, and then downloading the same track from allofmp3.. You WILL be able to hear the difference.

There are some posts about this around.. Also something about them using weird encoder settings which decreases sound quality even more.

I'd only use allofmp3 if you absolutely couldn't find a specific track anywhere else (and didn't feel like buying a cd of filler to get it legally :)

This is NOT for playing games or dvds.

IMO a very smart move by sony; use the economies of scale for their old-tech, one-chip PS2's to differentiate their other consumer goods..
All LCDS and plasmas are more or less identical anyway, so cabinet design and OSD quality will be key factors in TV purchasing...

The thing is you aren't recompiling C for different platforms with a JIT of this kind (JIT is kind of misleading, it should be called a dynarec); you only have binary ppc code which has to be munged into x86 form..
So you get some speedup from not having to read ppc bytes, lookup translation, perform emulation, etc for each cycle, but it's not a miracle method of 1000x performance gain :)
