Good thing anyone who uses a Cocoa web browser (Safari, OmniWeb, etc) gets auto spellcheck FOR FREE thanks to Mac OS X's system-wide spellchecking services.:p
Whoops...forgot to mention that the CD-ROM model has a slower processor and no modem. From CD-ROM to no-optical is a $50 drop. ...I would assume that Combo to no-optical would probably be a $100 difference though:p
Because that's what Apple does! Visit the education institution section of the Apple online store. The eMac, for example, is $749 with a Combo drive there. $649 for just a CD-ROM, $599 with no drive whatsoever. Strange (stupid) but true.
Because pirating hardware requires scurvy dogs and a conversion van painted to look like a pirate ship that ransacks a BestBuy truck. Pirating software requires said hardware.
Actually, I see a CD-ROM-less model ($100 cheaper) making big waves in the education market. NetBoot all machines for either installation on the HD, or forget the HD all together and you got a bunch of smart Dumb Terminals.
To really scare the crap out of Microsoft, Apple should make a Keynote-quality answer to both Word and Excel that can read/write the respective MS Office formats. Develop it for Mac and Windows just like iTunes. Give it away for free.
Sure, it'll cost tens of millions of dollars, but you undercut Microsoft on their #1 breadwinner. That's gotta piss them off even more.
There'd be more of a halo-effect with that than with just iTunes, especially if Apple bundled in a lot of exclusive OS X-style integration features into the Mac version.
The great thing about the touchwheel is the ability to accelerate and decelerate at will. After a few minutes (or even a few seconds), it makes perfect sense when you have a large list to browse through. Also, hold down the Play/Pause button for a few seconds to turn it "off".

if you want that then you need to spring for a PowerMac. The 5200 will handle anything that Quartz throws at it though.
I had a PowerMac 5200.
http://www.lowendmac.com/roadapples/x200.shtml ..but having Quartz throw ANYTHING at it would probably cause it to shatter into a million pieces.
Actually, if you haven't noticed,
;-)
From Safari:
Edit -> Spelling -> Check Spelling as You Type.
Ouch, my image and the image of Mac OS X!
nasssty gets a nice red dashed underline.
spellcheck doesn't
People keep forgetting that Microsoft has STOPPED DEVELOPMENT OF IE FOR WINDOWS independent of the OS too.
If you want to see IE7, you won't be seeing it on WinXP or Win2k. Gotta buy Longhorn.

Some people just won't buy Macs unless Apple PAYS them to do so. ...and even then, the machine's just gonna go on eBay anyway.

Keep in mind that Apple has more G4-based products than G5 even right now.
eMac, iBook, PowerBook vs. iMac, PowerMac

Not really.
The burglar trained himself on GTA.
They ship all their garbage to America, package it, and resell it.
There must be a reason this has not been done yet, but I cannot think of any.
They're all too busy playing violent videogames to actually kill anybody.
How about "First post"?

They should be reading Slashdot!

Actually, Sorenson 3 provides surprisingly good results with the right settings. In fact, it's based on a draft-spec of H.264
Hate to pimp my own stuff, but here's a look at what Sorenson (and Interactive QuickTime) can do: http://asfdotcom.net/features/iype/

I would assume that a lossy alpha gradient would translate just like a lossy color gradient would.
Set your screen to a less-dense resolution - like, 800x600.
That should help.
Just help one of those Nigerian guys with their money transfer and you'll be set for life!
If it's brown, drink it down.
If it's black, send it back!
Yeah, the "fix" meant burning at just 1x on all non-2x media.
I could do that myself in software.
