As a former Literacy Volunteer/Instructor, I'm curious how an eBook will help a learner read the instructions on a medicine bottle, help their kids with homework, or fill out a job application?
"With murder, you kill an individual. Suicide is the greater crime... you're effectively trying to murder the whole universe."
This guy did both... it simply doesn't get any more evil.
One of the things hammered out at the Council of Nicea was the nature of the holy trinity. In order to make it work, Jesus had to be declared fully both human and divine.
You're literate. Congratulations. And you've read The DaVinci Code. It's a work of fiction, you know. Nicea was simply a meeting of Church Fathers where Christian doctrine was finally formalized and unified. Gospel texts from various sources predating Nicea by up to 400 years refer to the Trinity, as an above post quotes.
"The Japanese space probe Hayabusa has just arrived at its destination, the asteroid Itokawa, and is taking pictures."
Will the Japanese tourist stereotypes never end?
Instead of signing the back of my card, I simply wrote "Please Check ID." Even then, I find that only about 50% of clerks bother to look at the back of the card and ask for ID.
This is about CRIMINALS...people proven GUILTY beyond a reasonable doubt.
Restraining orders are issued by Family Courts, which do not apply things like "rules of evidence" or "innocent until proven guilty." In Massachusetts, my sister could take one out against you without ever having met you, simply stating that she's afraid of you. Then, one day, you're driving past her kid's school... and bang... you're a criminal... no trial required.
Keep in mind that Massachusetts pioneered the "Instant Unsubstantiated Restraining Order," with absolutely no requirement other than the subjective say-so of a woman. Taking out a restraining order against the ex became de rigeur for any woman who was divorcing for whatever reason to bolster he case for child custody. Then guys started going to jail for driving by the house to get a glimpse of their kids. Now, insyead of going to jail, they'll be fitted with collars...
"First, they came for the fathers... but I said nothing, because I wasn't a father..."
With out those large media companies you would not have such great entertainment as "Friends"
Yes. Last night, a syndicated episode of Friends came up on my TV. As far as I could gather, the stupid actor character needed to appear uncircumcized for a nude role - his girlfriend/roommate/sister/whatever came up with a hairbrained sit-com scheme to fashion him a foreskin out of a piece of lunchmeat or whatever. That was in the first five minutes. I wouldn't stoop to infect my brain with snything beyond that.
Foisting such garbage off as "entertainment," the industry wonders why collecting and archiving our own viewing material would be desireable to us? When they fall, they won't know what hit them.
Why exactly would I buy DVDs that I can't play on my existing DVD player?
That's not what the article says. It says you wouldn't be able to play DVDs burned "illegally" on someone else's player if the copy protection flag (aka "evil bit") is recognized by your player.
The only way the industry is going to be able to enforce this kind of crap will be by introducing equipment with non-volatile firmware that stays "factory fresh" for life. Even then, the hackers will go directly to the hardware. The market simply will not support a medium that does not allow it to do what the simple VCR could do from day one - copy TV shows for time shifting and archiving.
Nope. "Painting" is the term used for 'painting a target',
I'm sure the prosecutor will agree with you, but it's still an irrelevant term here. Yeah... it's called "painting the target" when explosive ordnance is intended as a follow-up. But, in this case, the word "pointing" applies. This is a clear case of a thoughtless knucklehead wreaking havoc. A five figure fine? I'd be all for that. But 25 years of FPMITAP? I think not.
What's it going to take for this thing to feed on mosquitoes?
That's how it will all start. First, the robot insects will switch from dead flys to live flys. Then, they will discover that "extra jolt" from the human blood in the stomachs of mosquitos. Finally, after the mosquitos are eradicated from the face of the earth, they will have no choice but go to the motherload for their fuel source - human veins. The rest is too gory to go into.

And if people pay for it, helping offset the research cost - all the better. There just isn't enough real money out there available in grants without commericializing it for supplimental income.
Just a little background for the teeming masses. Not everyone involved in this stuff are terribly people that ignore the rights of cats and dogs in pounds to have happy homes....
What you said.

This is still America, the last time I looked. People should be able to spend their money any damned way they want without judgement or interference from the do-gooder charity police.
Does ridicule of AOL CDs really still deserve a headline story submission? Personally, I don't know of anyone who has received an AOL disk in the mail for a couple of years now. Come on now... don't the "free coaster" and "free floppy" jokes belong in the "All your base," "In Soviet Union..." and "I for one Welcome..." category after all these years?
I found myself in the HDTV dilemma last month when the picture on our 17 yr old 27" Sony finally became too dim to even watch in a darkened room. AFAI was concerned, enen tho we're not big TV watchers, an HDTV was our only choice.
We found a 27" CRT Samsung model [HDTV receiver built-in, TPX2775H] for $700 - so you don't necessarily need to spend $2000 for HDTV. It fit into the same space as the old Sony. I was blown away by the huge improvement in the OTA HD picture (vice digital cable).
We just ordered the HDTV-DVR box from Comcast for an added $11 per month. I'm looking forward to investigating the possibilities regarding offloading the HD video via the FW port - but it'll have to be dirt-easy for me to bother with... TV just ain't that important to us... we'd just like to be able to snag some old movies when the mood hits us.
What's the highest frequency EM raidation that can be detected/measured with the technology we have today?
There's an upper limit to the RF spectrum, but I don't recall the exact frequency. At the upper frequency limit of RF type energy, a phenomenon called "popping" occurs - electrons are lost, and ionization begins.
Wang and Pesavento also showed that the falling-paper effect is almost twice as effective for slowing an object's descent, compared with the parachute effect (that is, if an object falls straight down). And that evidently benefits trees and other plants that need to disperse seeds some distance from the point of origin. Plants with flattened seedpods also take advantage of the falling-paper effect.
Interesting. It better explains why deciduous (hardwood) trees tend to take over the coniferous (pine forest) trees once they get a foothold than the old "oak trees out-shade pine trees" explanation.

The book is likely an easier read than that review.

[GP]The Earth is truly nothing without us.
[P]I'd be quite interested to see your reasoning behind that statement.
If the earth f@rts, and there's nobody left to smell it, would it still stink?
Ipso facto - humanity could not give a cr@p what happens to the earth if it were extinct.
and it's really a "global" phenomenon, then how come nobody seems worried about Antartica?

A moment of silence for Roger Zelazny. His "Amber" series was the highlight of my sci fi reading youth.
It seems people are never happy with how things are supposed to look - when given the opportunity, many chose to change it.
/. It just ain't so otherwise.
Seems that way 'cuz you read
But since you brought it up - If I own the hardware, it's mine to tinker with. If I bought it, I can break it.
Who's gonna buy music over a dial-up pipe?

who used to say ... "I'll take the rascal out back o' the gluey and give 'im a tin ear!"
We already have "flat parachutes," they're called air foils - and, yes, they do provide a slower descent than a penumbral parachute.
