I've read the Federal Copyright laws in great detail and the powers that be at your University are wrong. The Copyright laws were created in the late 70's and amended up to the middle to late 90's ('poorly scotch taped together' is a better term that amended). Most, if not all, of the text of the Copyright laws are aimed at scenarios in the 70's and not today.
The Copyright laws are aimed at anything BUT electronic games, skins, LAN parties and whatnot. This is one of these situations where LAN parties are not explicitly (or slightly for that matter) referred to. Any case brought up with the Federal Laws would be thrown out and laughed at.
As for the State Copyright Laws, that's another story as I'm not familiar with Ohio State Copyright Laws. I'd look them up if I were you. My Money sez that they're just as poorly written as the federal laws.
Unless the University can provide detailed explanations and referenced to the laws they are worried about (which they can't), I would say go ahead with your lan party.
Besides, why would a game manufacturer create LAN options for games if they were illegal?
Sounds like the University officials need to get with the times and catch a clue.
I took a good look at this page and it's almost on the 'chaging the course of guitar playing' level. I love how you are able to change entire tunings while you're playing a song. This sort of technology can exponentially open up the creativity levels of the average guitar player. i can see why Jimmy Page is associated with this product as he's the master of wierd tunings.
However there's some major topics that this website doesn't cover:
Playing live with a Piano - When you're playing on the road or outside, you need to tune your instruments to the piano or keyboard due to the fact that it's the hardest to tune. This isn't an issue when in the studio but on the road, this can be a nightmare because you need to first set the tunings of the strings to the keyboard (if it hasn't been tuned lately) and then you can play with the cool electronic stuff.
Weather - This is a MAJOR factor on instruments as a +/- 10 degree (Farenheit) change in the weather from 'room temprature' can severely alter the tunings and the overall sound that comes out of the guitar. (This goes for pianos too if you're trying to tune them both outside).
Acoustic/Electric - For the Chunk of change that they want for this product you would think that they would make different sounds available too. Think about it. Not only could you change tunings on this guitar but you can change the sound from electric to acoustic. The technology is there. Alex Lifeson from Rush has been using it since the 'Test for Echo' tour.
I know this sounds dumb but make sure when you're testing the product that the transactions are indeed secured. I don't know how many times I've been called into a lab to find flaws in people's tests to find out that they didn't even check to see if transactions were secure.
Just so that everyone is clear. It's LEGAL to download music on the internet in Canada. However, it's illegal to upload Music to the internet in Canada.
The problem with both of them, at least when I last played them both, is that both of the anti-cheating devices are not associated with the companies of the games the devices are used for.
I used Punk Buster with Quake 3 Gold and was not able to get it to work due to the lack of help from Id and a problem with XP that prevented the PB updates from fully setting.
I used Cheating-Death when playing the Half-Life WW2 Mod 'Day of Defeat'. On the plus side, this program sucessfully weeded out all the hackers and cheaters very quickly. Updates were made much more frequently than VAC (Valve's Anti-Cheating solution) ever did. I LOVED that CD found the cheats and updated them within a week of being known. VAC? You would have to wait until they released their updates which were few and far between.
The Drawback was that the program WAS developed independently of Valve and the program gave the playing experience many 'challenges'. Most of which were lag related.
So yes, they work but the game companies need to work more closely and quickly with these solutions as they are EXCELLENT solutions to the cheating problems in on-line games.
This is the second time that the Big Publishers have limited Gearbox in what they wanted to do versus what they could do.
Gearbox, for those of you who don't remember, developed 007: Nightfire for the PC. This game was Published by EA and it's console version, which is different than the PC version, was published at the same time by a different company.
As RTM neared, EA forced Gearbox to publish the game as/is which was anything but complete. The PC version of this game featured a GREAT multiplayer and had a GREAT grassroots interest for Modding. However, the much promised Editor and improvements didn't come until many, many months after the patch was ready and promised. By this time any/all interest in Modding or extending the life of this game all but disappeared, thanks to EA.
It's too bad that Gearbox doesn't have the $$ to publish these games themselves without the Big game distributors messing up serious modding potential.
Perhaps they should stick to working with companies like Valve who have a great track record for understanding and nurturing the potential in a modding community.
"the entertainment companies...they have a responsibility not to do it if we want to raise the next generation of our sons to treat women with respect."
Excuse me, isn't this the definition of Parenting?
Perhaps it's no coincidence that we don't see Liberman's name in the Headlines all the time.
A section on telling organizations to test the policies and procedures that are put into place to work out any kinks in detection and reporting.
If you put all these policies, processes, and procedures into place and don't have a Mock intrusion or emergency, you won't know how good or bad your incident response will be.
I love finding new ways to blow things up and finding what will get the cops after me with more than 4 Stars.
I found that by lining up any number of cars right next to each other and using a shotgun to make the first one blow up, you can set off a REALLY cool chain reaction of cars blowing up (GTA VC). The strength of the blast of the first car is good enough to start the next car in sucession and so on. Now that the Game is on Xbox, the game has WAY more memory than the PS2 so you can go off and get more cars and not worry about the cars disappearing.
Also, the Cheat in GTA VC to make the pedestrians riot is REALLY fun and is a great way to make cash. I park a car in 8-Balls Pay n' Spray and just wait for the pedestrians riot (a few seconds) and just go wild with any weapon. There's a Vest around the corner just in case. You can spend hours just joining in on the riot.
Also, try the Tank Cheat in GTA3 and roll around the city. It's REALLY fun to just watch the Stars pile up.
Undergrad Tech Scolarships were few and far between. At the time, I was working for the number three CS department in the Nation.
The real money is in Graduate Grants and Scolarships. For it's when you're in Grad School that you're working on the potentially groundbreaking technology. Not as an Undergrad.
See if you can find other types of money as there are so many non-tech scolarships available that are never used. Keep looking the scolarships you're looking for are out there.
This is the most common cause of not waking up on time, still feeling tired in the morning, and repeatedly waking up later in the day.
In short, you are breathing incorrectly at night causing the effects of heavy sleep. your nasal passages are not getting any air for some reason or another and you are breathing through your mouth. If you wake up with dry mouth and/or clogged sinuses you more than likely have Sleep Apenia. Check with your doctor if you suspect that this is the problem.
My problem was that I needed two types of nasal decongestant to keep my sinuses clear. Once I got the Medicine on a set schedule, I was able to sleep eight hours and get up the next morning with no problems.
However, If you're just waking up after only sleeping a few hours...alarm Clocks with Truck Horns should do the trick. I used to work on call for a 24/7 internet web site and, through my boss's inepitude, threw my sleep and work schedule WAY off to the point where I just went to work when I woke up. No matter what the hour was.
It's about time that SOMEONE is willing to put their foot down and work for a company that wants to put out a quality title instead of another gaming quantity factory.
Sit Down and Watch MTV/MTV2 for a couple of hours. Of all the 'Rock' songs that appear how many fit the style I mentioned above.
You'll see that it's not elitist but a correct assessment of what is being played on MTV.
KNDD in Seattle used to play MTV heavy rotation 'pseudo-punk' all the time. The now have abandoned this format for real punk and real alternative as the 'pseudo-punk' format was a money looser for them.
There are lots of music out there but the ones that the RIAA are shoving down our throats, for the most part, are the ones I mentioned above.
I'm crapping over the lack of choice available to me. Did you ever stop to think THIS is why piracy is at an all time high and record sales are in the dumper?
