The funniest part of this excellent article is this snippet comparing large corporations with ``real world'' small businesses.
If, for example, you are targeting a large organization with a complex managerial structure, it is likely that there will be a culture of managers impressing managers. With this in mind, research needs to come from established organizations such as government agencies, objective research institutions, universities, and professors. Within this targeted audience, educational chops play a real role. On the other hand, if you are targeting a small business, real-world information will more likely be of interest. In this case, usage/skills statistics, press, similarly-sized case studies, and awards may have more impact. In a smaller organization, the focus is more typically on technical ability and costs, as opposed to the political issues encountered in larger corporate environments.

The good news, I guess, is that a dumb patent got invalidated.

I'm sorry, what's dumb about this patent?

My understanding of the algorithm is that Xerox devides the Graffiti area into 9 ``blocks.'' The recognition algorithm tracks which block the stylus starts in, the end block, and the blocks through which the stylus travels. The recognition is fast and accurate, because each letter is simply an encoding of (start, end, intermediate blocks).

This algorithm is neither dumb nor obvious. Palm copied PARC's Graffiti alphabet because the algorithm was so elegant.

Have you tried Graffiti 2? It's slower and less accurate.

Note that the article is saying that IBM wants to migrate Office to Linux. Not "give away for free". We'd still be paying monopolistic prices for it.

Even if the pricing is monopolistic (and I highly doubt it will be), the important part is Microsoft Office running on Linux. OOo is close, but not there, and it will never be 100% compatible. Not even Microsoft is 100% backwards-compatible with its own earlier versions.

The major hurdle to more widespread Linux adoption on the desktop is Microsoft Office compatibility. Anything that improves that situation will get more people seriously considering Linux.

We need to keep the big picture in mind.

One problem I see is that most email information is very hard to parse reliably if it's just free-format text. It would be great if you received a message that said "how about a meeting next Monday at 1pm my time" and the software would pop up your schedule for next Monday at 4pm because you're eastern time and he's pacific.

This is a great idea, and one that's already mentioned on the web site as part of the prototype. In the publications section, you'll find that Mia K. Stern is already looking at parsing dates and times out of free-form email to turn it into formal meeting invitations.

Microsoft allowed rampant piracy of Windows in second- and third-world countries for the same reason: getting people used to using the operating system means that 1) people will get comfortable with it and 2) people will be less willing to switch to another alternative.

The fact that it is free is what gets us in the door; the quality is what keeps us in users' minds.
