The ethernet cable is to turn the string vibrations from analog to digital. This is to make the sound clearer with less degradation of sound quality when trying to plug an analog jack into a computer.

    Downsides are:
Current Effects pedals don't work with it.
Current Amplifiers don't work with it.

So i guess, particularly if you're a live musician, it's of no real.

  3. Sony And The Internet on Region-free PS3 · · Score: 1

I suspect that the major reason for this is that Sony, after the bad PR recently is trying to be consumer friendly, but in a calculated way.

They have realised that games purchase over the internet is also profitable. So why not make the PS3 region free and tap into the online purchase market. People will buy games that arent released in other countries just cause they have heard great things baout them. Games are notoriously released in Japan without seeing the light of day in other countries, even if there is a demand for them. They effectively create a world wide purchasing market without restricting it to zoning.

This is also great for the consumer, because you will be able to take your PS3 to a different country, buy a plug converter and use it without having to worry about those pesky restrictions. Considering they will be losing money on the sale of a PS3, i think this is a wise a decision as it will minimise them having to produce a whole lot more just because people move countries.

They wouldnt do something like this if they couldn't see the profit in it.

Sales of less consoles + sales of more games = profit

  9. Writely Vs Word on Google Enters Web-Office Market · · Score: 3, Insightful

Is this an attempt for Google to compete with Microsoft in word processing? Because as cool as this may be, it's going to be mighty difficult to topple Microsoft in that department. The Office Suite is so embedded in the corporate world and homes that garnering support for this product will be difficult at best. People know how to use Word. The majority won't want to go to something else that is new and shiny. CIO's won't take the risk of switching over to a new system when they already have a tried and tested system in place.

Microsoft already whipped most opposition to it. Also, after development is this going to be free or is the consumer going to end up paying for the privelege?

It appears more and more apparent that Google is basing their business model on Microsoft (acquire and re-badge).

I'd love to see Google actually take the fight to Microsoft on something that Microsoft has not traditionally been strong at and show them how it should be done. Show them that they are innovaters and not just tagging along on already established software. Trying and compete with them on this front is almost a lost cause.

    I totally agree.

As a structural engineer i have been to too many countries where the education of their engineers leaves a lot to be desired. This shows in the quality of the end product.

Engineering is not meant to be a glamorous job. The money is good, but the reason its good is because lives depend on it. If you fail to engineer something correctly and leave design flaws, then there can be disastrous consequences. If you need to make it difficult at the college or university level, then so be it. If you cant handle the pressure in university, then there will be no way you will be able to handle the pressure when working in the field. I would rather not use the structure some hack from Bovine University created because the course had become easier.

It is not the type of field where you can allow complacency to sift through, because if you do, major disasters can occur.
