  1. It's meant to be "out there" on NextFest · · Score: 4, Insightful

To all of the posters that are critisizing the expo as a vapor-fest, I say to you, why not let your imagination run wild? Decades ago we had Worlds Fair and the famous Futurama in New York. People were left in awe of possible future technologies that improve quality of life. People came back wide eyed and filled with imagination. The closest thing I experienced to something like this today was a showcase at Disney Expo 12 years ago when I was 10... It had on display futuristic cars and possible technologies that openned my youthful imagination. It made a big impact on me and got me interested in technology. I hear people complain about the lack of innovation today and I'm personally disappointed at the lack of creativity in a lot of industries. In the 40s and 50s people got to see glimpses of the future presented by GE and Ford where everything is automated. People were happy and it gave them something worthwhile to look forward to. It gave us faith in technology. We have nothing like this today. I for one welcome conventions that inspire us, especially at a time when the future looks so bleak. Sure, it's funded by big corporations but so were the World Fairs in the past and they turned out great!

  7. Just on the phone with AT&T... on AT&T Wireless Fumbles Number Portability · · Score: 1
I'm a current ATT Wireless customer using their digital plan and I want to switch over to their GSM network. So I tried calling them a few days ago at their '3G' transition toll-free 866 number and was told there would be a 20 mins wait, this was at around 11pm EST. I hung up and tried again yesterday around 8pm EST. I was on hold for more than 30 MINUTES! I found it surprising since I'm already a current ATT customer. The customer service rep was friendly though and didn't seem agitated at all. So as a warning, if you want to call up AT&T and decide to switch into or out of their service, expect at least a 30 minute wait.

ALSO, if you change your service plan after you sign up for an annual contract they may extent that contract without telling you. I was on their local plan last year and with a 4 months left on my contract, I asked if they could switch me over to a national plan. They said no problem. When I called customer service a few months left, I found out my contract was extended by another year! Apparently, when I asked for a plan change the customer rep should have told me it would also mean my contract would be extended... After 20 minutes on the phone with customer service, the guy was finally able to void my service contract.

My advice to all current and future AT&T customers: The reception maybe good but the customer service sure isn't!

  18. Re:Moon on Chinese Manned Space Flight Set For Autumn · · Score: 3, Funny

Bottom line: There is nothing noble about China's spaceflight plans. So let me get this straight.

First China will send a few people on the moon.
Then they'll build a space station. And before we know it they'll have nuclear silos on the moon pointed straight at DC, LA, and NYC. In order to defend the silos against capitalist attacks, China's going to build a few TIE fighters to guard the surround space. Then the next thing you know they'll be sending chinamen on spaceships and attack the US from above the atomisphere. I'm sure that's just the beginning. After the nukes from the moon and the orbital attacks, China is going to colonize Mars and start a real "Red Army." These soliders will be ultra-powerful due to their incredible ability to withstand harsh conditions. Training in low-grav scenarios will also make them faster than any conventional US troops. Then all of the "Red Army" will board a super-large spaceship and spend 2 years flying toward Earth. In their spare time on the spaceship these solider will build ultra-advanced laser weapons and powersuits. Once they land they'll completely wipe our entire Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and the Coast Gurade.

Man, you're right! God help us all should the Chinese ever land on the moon. It'll be the end of us alllllll.

Pardon me for my cynicism but how do you propose China enter space tourism, commerce, etc. without at least first putting a man into space? Many people take for granted the advance space technology that the US has. Keep in mind how many decades behind China's space program is relative to the US's program. We have more astronaught that's been on the moon and back than their entire astronaught talent pool.

To all of those who are whinning about how China isn't doing enough to further Mars exploration or space tourism or space commercialization, please remember the space program needs to take baby steps and not giant leaps. The US had to launch a dozen undozen or so unmanned vehicles into space before strapping astronaughts into a space capsule. You can't walk before you crawl and you can't goto Mars until you've been to the moon. This is science and engineering, not a magic show.

For the most part you chronology is correct but you have one small fact wrong. #4 and #5 should be switched. The reason why the founders left Palm was because 3Com said Palm would never be spun off from 3Com. This meant the founders would have a lot less control over their creation. An internal struggle for control ensued and a result the founders left 3Com. Interestingly enough, 3Com renegged on their promise and spun off 3Com only a few month after the founders left. Now the two guys are joining their old company after years of separation. How's that for irony?

I think the biggest competition that HL2 has to worry about isn't all the other big name games coming out this year. Rather, HL2's worst enemy is the original Half-Life. Half-Life is hailed as a milestone in FPS, single player, and story driven gaming. If HL2 does not live up to the incredible amount of expectation built around it, I doubt it will really succeed. As soon as one reviewer says "HL2 does not live up to the hype," many gamers will just dismiss the game as just another attempt at raking in money from a cashcow franchise. Even if the game really is great, it may forever be overshadowed by it's predecessor. However, with that said, I think the Valve team is very talented and will produce a game worth buying.
