This is too funny. FBI raids a school on the grounds that there are illegal music swappers. I would liked to have been there laughin my ass off as they go through lockers looking for evidence.
Cop: Son going through your locker we found some questionable material. Student: *GULP* Cop: First off son be glad you live in america because without this gun registration located right next to your ak-47 and your 9mm you would be in some hot water. Student: *WHEW* I thought you were going to try and take my rights away! You had me worried. Cop: Oh we are son, we also found this copy of Britney Spear's latest album in your locker. Which we will be taking as 'Pirated' music. Your going away for a long time. *CLICK* goes the hand cuffs
HAHAHAHAH/one ticket, thats right... can you make it round trip I would like to come back to hell next year as well
-wife- Hey hun we just got the customized Magazine in the mail. OH kewl it even has a picture of the whole neighborhood! What quality even! -looks closer- Hey hun is that you? What are doing with the neighbors wife? Why is she naked??
Really I never trust a review because of how much advertising potential a magazine can loose by bad mouthing a game by a certain publisher.
To Make sure that the game is of good quality I always rent first for a few bucks, then if there are no problems and I like the game I consider buying it. If the game can be finished in the rental period then I suppose that would have to be a personal call for replay value, or if still unsure, Rent again and make sure.
If the game you want can't be rented. Leave it, it certainly isn't worth it if the game publishers don't want to promote it that way. It usually signifies that there is something to hide. It may cost you 10 bucks more but in the long run it will save 100s because of games bought that were crap or were boosted because of magazine hype for advertising money.
I always find it truely amazing that when I see people write what a programmer is, they are never truly modded up to a decent level.
I have come up with a new parrallel that I use to explain the difference. Programming is a lot like telling a story, Coding is like writing a book. Writing a book is easy, and can be done in many languages. Telling a story - thats the hard part, and can be done in any language. With the knowlege that the language will have the techniques to accent and inhance the story to its fullest form.
I would have to say that A mod of + 2 is too low because you are absolutly right. This is a dynamic field and one has to be ready to be more dynamic than ever to keep up...to a point. A person can only be so dynamic before burnout happens. Stability is needed at some point.
This statement bothers me: Much of the problem is that a lot of programmers here only know how to program, and more and more this level of programming is being outsourced
I think that you are backwards in that lots of people know how to write programs but do not know how to program. And it is the programmers that are keeping the jobs here. And the writing of code that is being outsourced.
I personally am not afraid of losing anything I have been working towards what I am doing since I was 6 years old. Love what I do and will continue to learn and keep doing what I do until the day I just am not allowed to do it anymore.
Say that the period of unemployment was actually you being a freelance IT consultant, then add that those brief jobs you got were consulting projects meant to be temporary.
What the hell is this? Are you trying to ruin the reputation of others who accually do this? Frag off.
If you have some spotty marks on your resume don't hide them change the styling of the resume to downplay the job hopping! If you were acually doing some part time jobs write them down too. Experience counts. I keep a small company on the books just in case I need to do some freelance work or a short term contract comes up that I know I can do. It costs me nothing for the company ($80 CAN) for a year plus banking fees. No lying to the potential employer. It hurts more than just you if you are caught, it ruins the trust of my potential employer too!!
I mean common, why does everyone have to compare The CG to PS2 and Xbox. Asides that they are all game consoles, as is my pc, and my pinball machine. But I mean really each has thier own qualities and fit into the nich of different players. Personally I own a PS2 and my okidoki computer. Why own a PS2? Well, for 1 when I purchased it there was nothing else like it in the market and I was lookin to upgrade from the N64. 2 DVD player, saved money on owing a DVD player. 3 its initial release had some great games. 4 reverse compatability, I could trade in the PS for a PS2 get some money off and still play the old rpg games?!?! 5 I was able to convince my roomie to go halfers on the system. 6 - as of today it is the only decent system to play my mature line of games!
Why own an xbox? My pc does quite well for gaming on that kind of platform. And yes I do play on the GC and yes I do want one but financially I cannot afford one. But it is definitly worth Price wise and quality wise for the games that I play.
Quit, tryin to say one is better the other when they really aren't. Just pick one that has the games that you like. And if you can afford it then pick 2 or 3. I am sure that you will find qualities in each that fulfil all gaming aspects.
I agree ask questions. Try and find out why your being offered this position.
And make sure to ask yourself some as well. Like: Do I trust the management?
Am I being railroaded?
Could I acually do the job?
Politically I would be asking them questions and feeling out the ones only a couple of "rungs" above me. Since you applied to a position that goes over a few heads, be sure that noone feels like putting you over a kettle and showing the ones above you that "see I knew he wasn't the type".
I mean if you can do the job, go for it! But beware that there may be a few more hurdles than just the ones with the team itself. I personally would take the job. I like the challenge and if there was someone out to make me look bad, I would love to prove them wrong.
While the heart of your comment I agree with. There are still some troubling solutions that have to be met. And albeit it is not a "Legal" solution in some countries. It is a solution. I for one being of the "creators of content" still support the "piracy" (for lack of a better word because it really is not piracy). It is used by many whom do not have the means to use these product.
lets take: Well, if they don't like the program and it's costs, DON'T USE IT! Use (and contribute to) OSS instead. It's like people complaining that Adobe prices photoshop too high so they are forced to pirate it. Well, the Gimp is out there for free, and if you want a feature implemented, the Gimp is open source, you are free to add whatever features you want.
Please tell that to the next HR person hiring you. When the list of required skills say "Photoshop and Visual C++" they do not want to hear "Photoshop and visual studio are too expensive, instead I use a modified gimp and gnu C compiler." (to a developer that would be more impressive, to HR they don't have a clue what you are talking about - they want Adobe and Microsoft because thats what it says) They will pick the next guy in line that "pirated" the software or is was/is wealthy enough to have purhcased it and made a point to learn it. I do not use pirated software to make the product. But I for one am glad that I had channels to go to when I needed to learn it.
Games are a different story, Since this is the topic we are on. Games are entertainment, and are not needed as a tool to enhance or maintain you life. So: if they don't like the game and it's costs, DON'T USE IT!
and btw this statement by Fallout2Man is correct: so correct in fact that it needs to be said again and again until everyone knows it. psst pass-it-on
by Fallout2man (689436) on Thursday February 12, @07:18AM (#8256884) First of all, your comparison to SUVs is like apples to Oranges. an SUV is a tangible physical good, software is entirely intellectual property. As well, I know this is probably the billionth time it's been said. Piracy is not theft, it is copyright infringement, there is a world of difference.
"to life in the military(driven by death and ignorance)? "
"Please try not to take something that I love and you obviously know nothing about, and smear it with such an attitude."
Truth is never an attitude. You know it your self that the military is driven by simply following orders and "not knowing what is over that next hill", Except by the "higher ups". That is ignorance. And in the military you send people to kill or be killed. Hence the death. I do not mean to smear tho.
It is in my opinion that the only reason people do not believe in Managers, and "higher ups" is thier lack of humanitarianism. I think you helped prove the point. Thank you.
So let me get this straight so that everyone is on the same page.
You like the fact that you think you are better than the people that work for you? You think that the people who work under you including the operations managers(ones who usually have a front line view of whats going on, and who have the best idea of who has good work ethics) are mushrooms, and are all pawns for your personal benifits?
And somehow you can parrallel the working world (one that is driven by greed and disillusion) to life in the military(driven by death and ignorance)? And on top of that you actually expect...no no... demand that people 'work' for you?!?
Yes a job is not a right, but it is still people that work for you. They are your company. You are not the company, the CEO or VP is not the company. Your workers are the ones who make the product for you to make the money without them you have nothing. Do not demand things of people, respect the brains that they have. I mean after all there is a reason they were hired.
Sony has already entered this market!! Its called Playdium. MS is only trying to compete with the PS on this level. I for one make it a point to be at a playdium whenever in a town with one. They bring back the memories and have some of the kewlest new pod games around...there is nothing like playin pod racing when you acually twist, bump and feel the breeze slow down when an engine goes.
Arcades are not dead! They are just evolving to better suit what they are ment for.
and in MHO LAN gaming places are just an evolution to arcades i know of one where i live that does really well. and cheap too. approx $2 and hour...when was the last time you were at the arcade and only spent $2 for an hour of game play??
The main problem with these games are that I must pay 2 twice for the ability to use these games...not that they are bad games
They want to take money from both ends of the horse

its not that i worry about the blizzard games on my console or that m$ could have all their games on their console. Its the fact that I could be playing ms blizzard games on my pc. the greatist fact of blizzard is that they make great games, and they care enough that they won't ever market a game that isn't ready yet...no matter what the demand. (just look at wcIII) MS on the other hand will take that and pump games that have even the slightest ideal to make money. which could mean WCIV - X in a matter of a year or two just to flood the market...that sucks!!
My biggest beef is with MS and the way they gimped the Mechwarrior series. MechCommander II sucked...it seemed like it had no QA attached to it what so ever, they just pumped it out and hoped the name made the money back! The same will happen to the blizzard name and all those games that we enjoy so much.
I get frustrated enough playing a great game on a crappy OS, but a crappy game on a crappy OS?? I'll make the complete move to Console and save my pc for development only for the consoles.
