After reading this article, I just remembered the relevant articles from the past couple of days and whipped up a little blurb trying to tie it all in.

Another example of eBay scammer fodder. But with a happy ending.

The way this geek went after this guy one may assume he had bullied one_too_many times. We're mad as hell, and we're not going to take it any more! This scammer is lucky to be alive.

And now, after his last update:

Update 12/12/02 13:30 CST: For those of you wanting to donate to my cause, I urge you to choose a local charity. There are a lot of needy people and organizations out there this season, if you can't think of anything local, I'm a big fan of Doctor's Without Borders and Lambda International. If you really must, you can send money to my girlfriend's Paypal account, cranberry_coyote@hotmail.com. She's the one who's covering this check for me right now, so I guess she should get this. I'm still not entirely sure about this, but you've insisted. Thanks again.

Rather, perhaps, it is more reasonable to view that it has had a large number of hole poked "at" it. The info contained on the linked page lists many of his critics views and Searle's responses ( which are of the "nuh-uh" type - good call, he'll fight to the bitter end :) ). However, it should be noted that even though this criticism makes many good points, neither the theory nor the opposition can be absolutely proven. This is why it is an important issue. We still take it seriously and it is still taught. It is a good place to "get one's feet wet" when first beginning to learn about AI and it is neither the first or last word on AI. On a side note, I just picked up a copy of John von Neumann's 1958, "The Computer and the Brain," which was his topic when he was asked to give the Silliman Lectures at Yale University. I have not found the time to start reading yet (only 82 pages) but was wondering if anyone else could recommend whether or not it was the few hours (with coffee breaks) to absorb his words. Let me know, thanks.

  19. I'm not a Sci-Fi book fan, but I play one on TV on What Makes Great Science Fiction? · · Score: 1

If one Sci-Fi premise has held true through the decades, it is that of the "Displaced Hero." This is evidenced in shows beginning with "The Fugitive" continuing with "The Six-Million Dollar Man", "Quantum Leap", "The Pretender" and even, my all-time favorite, "Millenium." Yeah, I know, what does the "Displaced Hero" factor have to do with "Millenium"? Well, nothing. It was a shameless plug for my fav. These shows have combined genius, science, horror, government, religion and a slew of other near-believable scenarios into modern settings and were able to cultivate loyal fan bases. With respect to the "short-story" type series such as "The Twilight Zone", "Night Gallery", and others, these satify a short-lived craving for a deviation from the believable and did not focus on long-term character development. To sum it up, I would have to say that my favorite Sci-Fi universe is that which is closest to modern day events, but with placing somewhat believable, albeit Sci-Fi, characters in extraordinary circumstances which further propel the long-term plot and build on long-term character development. Has anyone else noticed the similarities between, Fugitive, Quantum Leap and Pretender series?

I don't care if P2P succeeds or fails. There is always USENET and the abundance of .mp3/multimedia categories and postings. Will the RIAA/MPAA/DMCA attempt to effectively shutdown the smtp/nntp protocols which allow for postings on USENET. I don't think so. Data, by its nature, is designed to be copied. I have bought one retail CD in 3 years and not because of P2P networks. Their are too many other financial obligations in my life to spend money on music/media. I contribute to their profitable causes through other means - e.g., I watch MTV2/MTV and others on digitial cable, i.e., my viewing habits are recorded and matched up with advertising dollars. Also, I attend some concerts. It seems like the industry cry-babys are like most other sects of management - they have an aversion to change! Have I done anything wrong if I buy media (music/book) and let my friends/family listen/read (SHARE!) that media? Again, I don't think so.
