I don't think that MS will be able to buy its way out of their legal troubles with the EU like they did in the U.S. but you never know.
The problem with a 600 pound gorilla is that if it does not get what it wants it will beat the crap out of you until you are dead and take it anyway.
As far as their search engine is concerned, making it default will increase traffic to their site as so many windows users just go with what is already there for them. Of course we can trust MS to not filter content so bad words like Linux, Netscape, Opera, anti-trust and Mac will be available through their search engine.
I can run photoshop CS under OS X and then if I feel like it I can fire up X11 and "startkde" and have fun in koffice or gimp...if I need that linux "look and feel".
If I need a program that is not available via fink I can just get the source code and compile it myself. The only time I feel guilty about not using linux is when I fire up my windowsXP box.
These studies must be for lazy IT people who wish to toe the MS line. I have talked to several people who administer networks and the only reason they use Microsoft products is job security. If they had a trouble free network that anyone could administer..they would no longer be needed.
They have used these articles that Microsoft put out to convince the people who control the purse strings that MS is the way to go..and thus their job is safe.
So Microsoft continues to pump out the propaganda that their systems are cheaper, more secure and all around better that Linux, Unix and MacOS X. All of this while the world is crippled by viruses every few months and more money is paid to MS to update systems.
Even Bill Gates comments a few days ago that Microsofts systems are more secure than any other platform must have made some poeple gush with pride...the facts, when not paid for by Microsoft, tell the real truth.
These studies also call into question the bias of the companies that do the studies. How can we believe the Gartner group on anything when they fudge the details for Microsoft.
Blame the patent office for these cases, part of their job is to make sure the patents are not too broad. This was the case with Windows and Microsoft was denied. Of course a little grease made sure that it got through.
I would not have changed it. Since the guy is using his own name I think he could have beaten MS. I am surprised MS did not make the guy change his name as well.
The guy is entitled to use his own name for his company. Bribery worked for MS..otherwise they would not have a legal leg to stand on.
The Opportunity site seems much more interesting than the spirit site...I hope the rovers do well. However the Spirit site, the Sojourner site and both Viking sites all look very similar. Opportunity has had the most interesting pix so far and I hope they continue!
Don't get me wrong...I love all the pix from Mars...one of the first spirit color pictures is my desktop picture. I also check the Mars site every day.
Opportunity lucked out and landed inside a very interesting crater. I just wish that with all the probes sent to Mars at least one should be targeted at the polar regions. Since there is water at the poles who knows what they might find. Sure, it is in the form of ice but there is water there and maybe even a form of life. Seems like it would be worth the cost of one probe to find out.
The Vikings did not have this problem. They used a nuclear decay power source and lasted for quite a long time. Of course it is much colder there than where they are exploring now but if they have any chance of finding any form of life they must go where the water is...frozen or not.
If they are so hot to find water on Mars why don't they send a lander to the polar regions? Seems like all the probes send back the same pictures of rocks...At least opportunity gave us a different view this time.
Since the English probes have confirmed water on Mars it would be nice if we actually had a probe there to sample it...maybe even drop off a few species of lichen to start terraforming.
They have been debating the hubble issue long before the bush plan was announced. Several trips are required to keep Hubble running...it has already lasted longer than designed, and those expensive trips are best spent on a new telescope...which should require only one launch.
You forget the added benefits from the Space program, jobs, trickle down tech, military research and the like. Why do you think that china is so hot to advance its space program?
Hell, half the people working at burger joints have a problem getting a simple order right. It is like they are hiring people too dumb to be on "Street Smarts". I think they need to double check those pulses again.
Many people give to more than ONE charity. I am hardly a rich person and have been disabled for the past four years and am on a fixed income. I give to charities on a regular basis.
I often find that those who say we need to donate to help other people and make people feel guilty usually NEVER donate one penny themselves.
As a republican we always donate to good causes, we just don't need to tell everyone we do...we prefer selfless acts.
Mostly, but never drain ANY cell completely! This can cause a dead cell within the battery and it will need to be replaced or if you know the "trick" it might be revived.
Most quick chargers shut off or trickle charge the battery and are not harmful to the battery. I have many NiCads and LiIon batteries that have well over 500 charging cycles and some 10 years old that are almost as good as the day I bought them.
If you care for your batteries they will last a very long time and if you don't, they won't. It is as simple as that. The article mentioned tells the right way to do it....if you don't follow those guidelines don't whine when your battery is dead.
The person who wrote this really knows their stuff. MS has been backing themselves into a corner for a while now and while most windows users can be distracted by bright shiny objects some are admitting the fact that their OS has major problems that are not going away anytime soon.
As one reader here wrote that some websites or servers will not work without the seal of "owned by MS" in the future, it is already here. There are some sites now that will not work with any other OS and browser other than Windows and IE. Can you guess where the content creation tools that made these sites come from?
Even the MS page to lodge a complaint against it for the anti-trust case only works under Windows and IE....which if you are running those, you will be less likely to complain. Good idea I guess....but proves the case against them.
Microsoft will reap what it has sown and it could not happen to a nicer bunch!
While not original and we on the Mac platform finally get it since Microsoft stole it from us years ago. It shows that a game that is designed right can offer good gameplay and high frame rates with excellent control. I wish other games could be as well designed. I guess Bungie did not suffer much under the meaty thumbs of the stooges from redmond.
As one of the Apollo astronauts once said, and I paraphrase "when sitting up there in that capsule you realize that your butt is strapped to something built by the lowest bidder"
This is the problem of most failed missions...things that should have been checked, replaced, double-checked, improved or what have you are not done because of cost and profit. Tie the payoff to the success of the mission and things will vastly improve...but they will cost much more.
Outlook and Outlook Express' lame mail filtering need a complete overhaul. It is more likely to catch and trash real mail more than junk mail.
MacOS X mail.app which uses Bayesian filtering to weed out the spam should be the model on which Microsofts programs are built. What self respecting email spammer will use that stupid idea of sending out emails? None. It is up to the recipient to manage their spam and Microsofts tools are not up to the job.....this one of the many reasons I let my Mac handle my mail and not my PC.....that and I don't think my mail program needs to install other programs without asking me.
Speaking of "commercials sucking" I tuned into PBS the other day to catch Nova. It had been a few years since I had viewed PBS. With cable fare such as Discovery, TLC, The history channel and the like I have not really had a need or want to view PBS.
While the Nova program was great what appalled my was all of the commercials on PBS....not the thinly veiled attempts they used to have but full out commercials. Depending on when the show ends you could have as many as 15 minutes of commercials and self promotion per hour, nearly as much as "regular" TV. At least "regular" does not pretend to be something it is not.
I think PBS no longer serves the public as it once did. Its political slant is to the left to far left and usually does not serve all of the public in most of the country. Why don't they refuse government funding and go full commercial...I don't see much difference. Maybe all PBS stations are not the same but the one in our area is unwatchable.
Well don't rejoice, as the poster said most older USB Umax scanners use a pseudo USB interface and will most likely not work even with this software. My scanner is listed as well supported and working fine but after installing this I still have no access to the scanner via OS X.
The best bet for Umax scanner owners is to get SilverfastSE which does work under OS X with most "USB umax scanners" even though they migh not be listed as supported.
However you best bet is to take the money you would spend on the Silverfast software and put it towards a scanner that will work under OS X by a company that is committed to OS X. That means someone other than Umax!

With proper care, rechargeable batteries can last a long time. I have nicads over 10 years old that work nearly as good as the day they were purchased. 3 to 5 years is normal, 5 to 7 years or lnger can be expected with good treatment.
If you don't allow the battery to discharge almost fully, battery life can be curtailed. Worse, total discharge can lead to dead cells in the battery...which can sometimes be fixed (I won't post how here, it is a little dangerous) but usually means the entire battery will have to be replaced.
You mean that was not a picture of the Olsen twins giving some guy a blow-job?

Bill Gates was just saying the other day that Windows was the most secure OS on the planet. So this must be a mistake, right?

Well, it may not be so lost after all:

I do wish they would send the second one like they mentioned in the article. It was and still is a good idea.

Now that is the funniest slashdot reply I have seen in a while.
BTW..Bill Gates desktop is about the last one I would want to see.
Maybe we will get lucky and the Queen might "crash" when she is using the sword to knight him.
I wonder how much this cost Bill?
