  4. Why I hate it, Why it fails. on Episodic Gaming Changing Gamemaking? · · Score: 1

Honestly I prefer to buy a game and having a consistent story; Begining, Middle and End. Half-life 2 and Halo 2 were anticlimatic for this reason; they both end up feeling incomplete. (Like buying a full price demo.)

Episodic Content Fails when you release each episode for $20, knowing that you'll lower the price in 6 months. In this manner it fails because people will hold out for the 3 announced episodes so they can buy it in a bundle at a cheaper price ($40 vs $60 {$20X3}). In the end when you pay more for the episodes than you did for the original game it just doesnt feel right.

Secondly, Episodic content fails when the game designers release the content with the intent of treating paying customers as beta testers. When content is released and the designers look at how players are responding to the design with the intent of going back and retooling or completely changing parts of the game. Sin Episodes IIRC had such retooling after reports of it being too easy. If I'm paying for a game I'm expecting quality, not bugs and play testing.(I hear they pay people for doing that :sarcasm:)

Perhaps the problem isnt the concept of episodic games, but the execution; in this instance Steam's variable pricing and 'we can patch it later' mentality.
These 'great' deals on steam are absurd if you break down the cost of buying individual games the day they are released.

I'm willing to bet Valve will bundle the episodes and give them away for free if they decide to release another sequel. (I did get all those half-life expansion packs for free when they released steam)

I.e. how well can you draw a circle/line free hand?
When was the last time you had to?

Does this mean tools like a ruler and a compass decrease the ability to draw circles and lines? No it doesnt, it just means less people actually do/practice those things free hand. And there are tools that provide better results.

Same thing here, people just dont feel the need to practice drawing free hand.(so less people keep doing it after college)

Given some time and designs start to burn out and people will go back to drawing/free hand work.

Look at comic books, Marvel comics in the 90s saw a decline in pencil work as they started to go for all digital ink and color. The result was a mess, crappy looking figures with gradients and colors that looked very dull. meanwhile you had comics coming out from other companies like Wildstorm and Image that had extremely fine and detailed pencil and ink work, blended with computerized color. The shit hit the fan at marvel and now they make movies, but thats a diffrent story.

a personal workstation means a greater number of hardware and software compatability issues, problems they'll bring to you for help.

Secondly notebooks are NOT good workstations for graphic majors. LCD screens can be tricky when dealing with color value and contrast. (look at a grey scale chart and tilt the screen very slowly)

If you're going to be working with print quality work a notebook is the last place you want to be working on, if you plan on doing anything beyond 8x11 you're going to need a beefy system. Atleast a laptop with a good GPU and a gig of ram.

I advise you to have staff do a test run. Have them buy a laptop, and use it as their main graphics workstation. and I dont mean give every paper pusher a laptop I mean your Designer/Artist teachers; and force them to work exclusivly on it. I'd bet they'll complain about slowness, screen brighness/contrast and physical system weight.

I never liked SOE's payment plans, mainly which you have to pay for expansions. Mainly because in multiplayer games, people usually wont jump up and buy an add-on; and because people don't buy into it, those who do are stuck with very few people to interact with in those "new" areas. Remember that planetside expassion; yeah it sucked because there was nobody to fight there.

My only other gripe with SOE is there lack of an art/graphics department. SWG/EQ/EQ2 you look at the graphics and kind of just want to move along. Planetside lacked alot of detail, structures were very basic angular rectangles, but that was main FPS so it worked; but I would still want more detail to hold my attention.
Granted, EQ2 does have some nice graphical effects (Lighting/water/shadows). But the problem seems to be that their artist(s) don't use them. EQ2 looks very shiny and plastic, but the lack of attention to fine details is odd. I'm having trouble explaining, but the graphics just have this early to mid 90's CGI TV series feel to it... kind of reminds me of Reboot.
