I started professionally in the IT industry back in April of 2000. I started out by picking up contracts and short-term work. I was eventually able to land a few full-time positions, and various office politics saw me jumping from company to company for a period of about three years. In December of 2003, I landed a full-time position with a pretty decent company. I penned my own job description, built the IT infrastructure basically from the ground up, and ran a very successful IT department. Then, the parent company started taking over our company, and my position was eliminated due to "re-organization within the department."
Rather than look for another IT job where I would eventually become miserable and have to spend thousands of dollars on new certs and learning new technologies, I decided to go to college full time. Seeing as how I dropped out of high school, got my GED, and immediately started working back in 1997, not having a college degree was a hindrance for making better than minimum wage in any other industry.
I'm now a full-time student at a 4-year state university, and after I graduate in 2012, I intend to attend law school. I will become a criminal prosecutor, and have no desires of going back to IT.
However, and with all of that said, since starting college last year, I have worked in an IT capacity for the university and former clients. It's what I know, what I'm good at, and what pays the bills. After all, school ain't cheap, and neither is rent.
You know . . . I still live in an area where AT&T still hasn't rolled out 3G! I'm stuck in the 2.5G dark ages with EDGE. (Carbondale, IL)
What is this 42MBps you speak of?
Ah, but the fringe benefits of your payment service are far better than any possibility of any offering on the internet.
It's called "marital relations" and unlike prostitution, it's completely legal and it's expected!
As with any "research", it costs time and money for said researcher, but that researcher hopes that others can either A. learn from his/her research, and B. the research will pay off "in the long run."
Why does Linux even exist? Why bother "researching" an open source operating system platform? Why not just buy either Windows or MacOSX, and leave it at that?
All researchers may appear to have "too much time on their hands" as you so eloquently put it, but remember the purpose of the research.
And, it's a two-fold thing for their marketing department. They now have your mobile phone number so they can call you and sell you more (insert product here).

Consequently, if you download the "QuickTime 7 with iTunes 6" self-expanding executable, and use WinRAR to expand it, you can go after only the QuickTime 7 installer, rather than installing both applications. At least this is what I have been told, I haven't actually tested it for fear of DMCA prosecution. Although I'm not reverse-engineering anything, I would be using the software for a purpose other than for which it was intended, and I might get sued or thrown in jail.

I'd really love to get my hands on SPAMHAMMER 2.0. If you're willing to make it available, please drop me an email. There might be some hosted bandwidth in it for ya... =)
For somebody to take the time to write such a wonderful letter to the MPAA really inspires me to do the same. I, too, am sickened by the inane things that DRM has done for media. I can definitely understand these giant media conglomerates wanting to protect their rights (yes, DeCSS'ing a DVD-Movie and then copying it for your friends is copyright infringement) but certainly the way that they're going about doing it is far from the best way to do so.
lazypenguingirl - Kudos to you for a letter well written.
I see two plausible scenarios with the introduction of this technology.
#1: How long before some greedy-rich politician, trying to make EVEN MORE money, sells these ideas/secrets/actual production models to some foreign government?
#2: Which future president will accuse another country of having these weapons and then recant his story later?
#3: Where do I buy my tinfoil hat so I can avoid being railed by the electromagnetic phaser gun?
Which you can promptly put a big red "X" on, and put back in the mailbox and send back to the offending company. They are then charged for the return postage back to them. Or, how about the credit card offers that send you business reply envelopes? I shred their application and mail it back to 'em.
Greetings, fellow/.'ers....
I read Mike's website, and saw that he posted a poll on what he should do with the donations that people made to him to pay for his legal fees.
Here is a copy of the post that I made on his site.
Hi, Mike Rowe:
I think you should take the donations that you received and turn them around as a donation to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) or the Free Software Foundation (FSF).
That'd slap Microsoft right back in the puss for all they've done.
This whole copyright infringement stuff needs to go away. Obviously you can prove your name is "Mike Rowe" and if you have your own software, or are a software developer, or like playing games, (or perhaps you cannot attain an erection) you should be able to put "soft" after your name. Screw MICROSOFT!
I commend you for settling, however. I probably would have told the bastards to go take a long walk off a short pier, after replaying the scene from The Matrix. "How about I give you the finger, and you give me my phone call?"
Thank you for sharing that with the crowd. (I didn't even see it on FARK!) I feel that flight attendant should be suspended, especially if he feels that it's 'his plane.'
Hopefully some discipline will ensue. I know I certainly won't fly that airline!
And how long before a Linux version and applicable plug-in is available for OpenOffice.org? I mean, I'd love to be able to take advantage of this type of technology, but until it's ported to Linux, it's of no use to me!

Wooooooooops! My bad - a dead link! I guess MS Boycott stopped serving that video or Monkeyboy himself had it taken down. Anybody with a live link?
Yeah, cause lord knows Mars needs Developers, Developers, Developers, Developers!
I just don't want to see any commercials of that stupid guy on Mars saying, "Can you hear me now? Good!"

He should have zapped the DVD in the microwave like the rest of us who don't want *anybody* getting at burned data.
