I love the EFF but this is just wrong. EFF is about freedom to me and these constant takedown measures against the web, even something as shitty as Facebook, are ripping apart the main appeal of the web. Each grab for more control destroys the beauty, even if it is done in the guise of "good purposes"
This is just more big gov and big biz land grab. The more things are regulated the harder it is for competition to keep up. Every little % helps. Google and co do not care that they are stripping humanity out of anything and everything they do. They just want to make sure the playing field is only level for themselves.
This will just turn everyone towards a newer hidden web. Hopefully distributed and free of their control.
You guys are pretty much all the same. Socialist pro government hail fining the big boy for a stupid frigging api that could've and was used by everyone. Why do you hate companies, just because they have money? Guess what the government has far more than Facebook and who wins in this? Yeah. Not the consumer. Th is crap towards a smaller company (which I am sure there are tons and will be tons that do something similar but with less customers.. heck I remember even working at a few of them where api's could request ANYTHING.. just it was the get it done mentality) would shut it down financially. We're telling the government they should be allowed to govern 1s and 0s.
How about show some restraint and don't use public free services that share your data WITH YOUR KNOWLEDGE? Use one of the million private ones and switch if they suck. Stop being so damn lawsuit happy. In the end it really was 1 penny per Facebook customer.. that is what your data is worth ultimately since every frigging Internet company already has it.
This is blown out of the water with the fact that uber / lyft are cheaper and save money for customers so the customer can use that money other places in the community instead of blindly throwing it at government that all take their cut. They can also afford more trips which pays more people. They get to decide where their money goes, not government.
I wish people around here (/.) could understand the movement. It's larger than just PoW mining. There are a lot of better coins than bitcoin that are pushing the boundaries of financial meets OSS tech. It's surprising there are so many critics these days just because it involves financial matters. It's almost all opensource and it's a huge movement for freedom from oppression across the entire world. It's not just currency. There are meetups everywhere on it that are full of people every day. Just reach out and stop being total assholes.
GNOME is way better these days than it ever was. Unity was way more clunky. Ubuntu is going in a great direction finally and has put all dev support behind what other distros are also using.
I use latest Ubuntu and Antergos (Arch) on all my machines. The desktop experience is great finally.
It's funny that we all think these companies are automatically evil just because of some software bits being not exposed when they are also putting food on the table for their employees just as the farmers are. They are under equal pressure to deliver a product that makes money and yes there are many choices made against (and for) farmers.
That said I am an extreme OSS advocate but it's funny to make the farmers victims when they are just consumers. If these groups were stopping the farmers from making their own equipment from scratch then yes I'd say that is evil.
I'm sorry to say this but I am pretty positive ex or even current farmers work for some of these tractor companies and make money from producing them. There is more to this than good vs evil.
Nobody in crypto wants regulation except for people who already have money since it might bring institutional money. The point of the system was to work around regulations and countries that try to block it. People who even mention regulation do not understand it or just want to make it all illegal.
It doesn't take _you_ effort. But maybe someone who has secluded themselves and stuck at problem solving became a little bit "pointed" and now after realizing it needs a break from what they are doing to reflect and fix that which does take time away from coding. It's like me when I get a toothache, I'm an absolute shitty person. I don't mean to be but it doesn't even occur to me at the time because I am feeling pain that I'm being an asshole.
Why isn't everyone perfect??
I'm sure everyone at The New Yorker treats everyone fairly and this Linus Torvalds guy is a horrible monster outlier. Or maybe it could just be men that are focused and practiced enough to be kernel/device driver programmers didn't take time hanging around a bunch of people who share their feels on snapchats every 5 seconds. Maybe instead of going out with a group of friends to the bar last night he was in a dark room with glowing monitors until 3am ironing out a bug or 30 and responding to emails from other devs doing the same thing across the world.
It takes sacrifices to be a certain type of person. Not everyone is meant to be social and friendly and courteous because that takes time and effort away from I dunno launching an entire Kernel project that represents your entire life's work.
A lot of us are pro crypto currency but we get drowned out by the 500 comments from anonymous cowards and shill accounts stating how terrible it is. It's open source, it sends damn near instantly anywhere in the world (and with spacechain and eth outside of this world also), a lot of coins are distributed and exchanges are becoming distributed to avoid gov persecution. There are tons of new developments almost monthly and it's a lot of fun to go to the conferences which for the most part are jammed full (check out BOB in Chicago).
It's fine. The bullshit will calm down as more and more cool advancements come and people realize some of the projects are for awesome communities (see Tezos) and not to feed corporations or corrupt governments. There are still opensource people here who can appreciate damn near every coin is opensource and cross platform.
This right here. I can't believe how many comments on this article are anti Amazon. These people responded to an ad for a job with a set $ amount up front. They continue to work there. I don't care what Bezos gets paid, he started the frigging company. Pay him a trillion an hour. Why does everyone care what he gets paid?? This is just people grouping together hating on someone who made it. Making it big is the American dream. Not working some shitty factory job for someone who made it big. These people can live with others to save on costs like immigrants from India/poorer countries and save up money and start their own business or do their own stock investments. They can also work another part time job like I did when I was younger and make more than a full time low level management salary in total.
I think the biggest issue here is that these Amazon jobs are typically in poorer areas where people are desperate for a job (thank you again property taxes for forcing warehouses to be built in the boonies) but since they are in the country they tend to live alone or with their parents. Nobody works together to save money anymore and I guarantee you they have the latest smartphone tech with equivalent monthly bill and go out drinking each weekend.
Laughter is the best medicine for life. If you can't laugh at something you or yourself are attempting to do, you're most probably missing part of the picture (or your temporal lobe). If you support Sanders efforts you are missing out on the picture that working for Amazon is free will. If you work there you likely can't find another place to work and if you hurt Amazon just for that fact they will likely respond by eliminating those positions instead of paying them more.
Bitcoin and alts are showing a strong week with lots of good press and impressive reach/significant projects. Queue the bad press for shorts to make a profit.
Why do we keep covering these obvious causation vs correlation studies. Heck this one looks like it was crafted in reverse just to tarnish low carb diets. They get 2 minute blurbs on news stations and you never hear from them again. Ridiculous.
There you go. These buildings are just dongles to the larger building. And nobody charges more than $200 for a dongle. That is how they evaluate at the $200.
Way to throw millions of people under the rug like that. What's in it for you (or others here) to be such a critic? Why hate _this_ technology? Other than the power usage, which is why I like PoS coins that use almost nil power, you're hating opensource technology just because it deals with markets/money? I don't get it.
Or I have zero bitcoin and hold 30 other altcoins. I started buying bitcoin back when it was 700$ but spread into other projects that I enjoyed more. It's never been in a bear season and if you look at the chart from year one you can tell it can only go up from even here. I'm already happy with it. I enjoy the ecosystem and can't believe any person that wants to call themselves a nerd would frown upon a distributed database/ledger that is powered by opensource. Opensource that can be applied to open any business process. You guys just want to hate that is all there is to it.
Someone writes this article right after corporate America Starbucks (crypto will be first worldwide currency) and microsoft double down on blockchain and nyse owner has a huge announcement to back bitcoin with real purchases for futures.
You guys are just funny with the trolls. In five years you will be left in the dust.

This was the dumbest comment in the article. Obviously software methods exist to verify after the fact that what you saved is what you expected.

Verizon is working with Spectrum to roll out using their fiber, poles, and outdoor wifi in all areas for the "5g" service.
