    I'm more concerned that this might be the start of another hackers war - the consequences of this turf war playing out in a much larger (and vunerable) playing field already seem evident.

    A newer version is available from the manufacturer. Some interface changes and the program is now called HDD Health.

    I think what Bill was referring to was that if this tool becomes widespread it may encourage people to use 'bad' design practice (just because they can). God knows its happened before.

    Your standard analog land line uses a stream of 64kbps (ulaw/alaw compression) but this is related to the quality of the audio not the latency of the network it goes over. The telecom network traditionally allocates a complete end-to-end circuit for your call - wasteful but guarantees QoS.

    I definitely think this [VoIP] is the way to go. This is an preview of the future and as such will have limitations.

    That's a fair rebuttal, but if these silent partners do indeed turn out to be MS and IBM it's far more like the wars by proxy of the cold war. Would I be right in thinking this is a first for the computer industry?

    One concern is the ability in future years to access documents in by then obsoleted file formats. Office 20002 no longer natively supports the ability to read Office 4.0 documents.

    2 separate security issues. Firstly there is the security of the internet connection. This is why the default values of the router should be changed (ESSID, password, enabling WEP, MAC filters). The second issue is the security of your internal network where a further level of encryption and authenication should take place. it's one thing to give someone free internet but you don't want them accessing your private information.

    Banks (see The Player of Games for a good example) employs the use of effectors (basically field manipulation) which surround the object or person to be transported and move that part of space to the desired location without destorying the original. Don't think he ever mentions the range these operate on, but the effectors themselves are capable of long range sensing.
