  1. Not just that... on Media Players for Windows Without DRM? · · Score: 1

    - VLC plays movies that you're currently downloading, - VLC plays fragmented files (i.e. 30% completed torrent downloads), - Quicktime files, DVDs, SVCDs, VCDs, even music files There have only been 1-2 files that I wasn't able to play with VLC, and even then the audio still played (which wasn't sufficient but shows that the software tried anyway). I never download any other player anymore, this one has all the codecs and capabilities.

  9. Now hourly workers? on EA Settles Employee Lawsuit · · Score: 3, Insightful

Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter said EA will get productivity gains from the changes and, if it needs to, will control costs by weeding out slower workers.

He said the artists who are reclassified as hourly would likely get more supervision and be assigned work-related quotas, resulting in less job satisfaction.

"Think of it more like a factory worker," he said. "The assembly line just sped up."

Is this really a win for the artists? Are quotas a good thing for game development? If an artist is supposed to pump out x amount of textures or models or what not, then will they still be able to put out great games?

I can see it now, an artist who's talents are probably at the higher end of the spectrum...but this is because he takes a bit more time on his work, thus giving managers the excuse to fire him at whim because he's not "performing up to standards."

It would be nice if video game employees would be properly compensated for their hard work and dedication as opposed to just working at $13-18 / hour if you converted their salaries to wages.

  12. Howto: Breaking in Boots & Not getting bliste on Hurricane Relief - What Would You Bring? · · Score: 1

Usually to break in leather boots quickly is to get them completely wet and walk in them until they become completely dry.

To really minimize blisters while using boots for long days, and your feet aren't used to them, I would suggest what I use for hiking (did 100km(60 miles) in 4 days, feet were okay): Bring 2 pairs of liner socks and 2 pairs of woolies. The liner socks act as a second layer of skin and generally stay put while sliding against the woolies.

    Wigwam CoolMax Liners - Liners.
Wigwam Ultimax Cool Lite Hiker Crew Socks - Woolies

Every day you can wash 'em and hang them to dry (since they're all quick drying) so no more than 2 pairs of each are necessary.

You know...you do "preventative maintenance" on cars so that instead of having to pay $5000 to fix a problem every two years, you pay $300 every one year.

This is the same thing, you move along with the times - in this case go towards an open document format, so that you have the choice to use a number of different software applications or operating systems. In fact, by not allowing something like this to happen it will cost a greater amount of money in the long run.

Too bad 90% of organizations seem to have only short term profit goals instilled in their minds, closing themselves to greater opportunities.
