I used to live in Virginia. I would travel to West Virginia on holiday for mountaineering trips. It's a stunningly beautiful state, regardless of it's "redneck" reputation. I distinctly remember seeing vehicles on the road proudly decorated with "WV Coal Miner" bumper stickers.

So yeah, I can think of lots worse careers than being a coal miner.
There is another solution you may not have heard of. You can become a member of a "Healthsharing ministry" (even if you aren't religious). I am a member of Liberty Healthshare myself. They will negotiate prices with providers on your behalf just like an insurance company. I've been a member for over a year now, and perhaps the best thing about it is that I've never had to read a letter from or talk on the phone with anyone from Blue Cross Blue Shield's "customer service".
I also know of providers who will provide competitive prices for self-pay patients. Just to give an example, I saved $100 on an ear exam and wax impaction removal by calling around.
What you say is partially true. I agree that there need to be protections against greedy actors who would take advantage of the desperate.
However, when it comes to management of many conditions, I have found that cost and quality varies greatly from provider to provider and it can be extremely rewarding to shop around. For instance, I drive six hours each way to see a sleep specialist. Why? First of all, he doesn't treat me like a freak like some other doctors I've been to. Second, he obviously knows his stuff. Finally, his clinic will observe you in their sleep laboratory for two nights for less cost than one night at the local hospital here.
I've heard from patients with the same condition in the UK who say that they have their assigned specialist and if they aren't satisfied with the care they receive, they are totally out of luck.
Thanks for the response. What I was getting at is that I suspect that things like CPTSD happen on a spectrum of severity. I was simply speculating that perhaps I've experienced a much milder form of what you endured. I think that there's a lot of grey area between being abused as a POW and living a normal, happy life.
You you have CPTSD? I would like to pick your brain on something, if I may.
I am in my early thirties and I live with Asperger's Syndrome. I didn't know about Asperger's until my mid twenties. My entire childhood was spent being ostracised by other children for being different, and video games were my escape. Emotional abuse was just a part of life for me. I never considered myself a victim of PTSD, but I do remember a while back, I had a rather shocking flashback to repressed memories when my wife and I were discussing sending our child to school. Chief among these memories was the memory of being verbally and physically abused by older children on the school bus.
The thing is, even when you do understand a thing like Asperger's, it's still difficult to fit with "normal" people (or to use the jargon, neurotypicals). I mean, I've never been in a life-threatening situation on account of this, but I wonder if something like CPTSD could explain some of the emotional issues I live with.
I repeat: You can always tell that we're getting screwed when the name of a policy includes the word "reform".
This applies to all "reform" laws. How much money did health care "reform" save you on your insurance premiums?
The "Obamacare" solution is for the government to mandate that you be provided insurance to pay that $5000 per month. You suggest that it is outrageous that Obamacare be repealed because without it, your sister may now have the money to pay for those drugs.
To me, the true outrage is that the drug company is gouging your sister and her insurance company for those drugs. I know of no other legal monopoly that has a heavily armed federal agency dedicated solely to its maintenance. (the DEA)
A real leader would tell the drug company where they can shove the $5000 price tag./rant
Some people would argue that there are reasons other than employment to be educated. When pursuing my master's degree in mathematics, I took a music class for my personal enjoyment. Did I waste my time because the music class had nothing to do with any job I applied for?
I wonder why they didn't just program browsers to prompt the user to allow the server to see their battery status similarly to how they did it with location services. I deny location services to web sites all the time that have no need to know my location.
If I log onto a web site that uses geolocation to help me find something, of course I will share my location. If I log onto a web site to read news and it wants to know my location, I deny that every time. Why shouldn't it be the same with the battery API?
Interesting... I had the impression years ago the Netflix was rigged up to require some DRM that only ran on Windows. I think it was in SilverLight. I never thought to even look at it again.
If I may ask, what are you using to watch movies? I haven't watched movies on Linux for a while, and I keep getting the impression that mainstream services aren't compatible because DRM OMG teh piratzz
Yeah, a logical, but underhanded way of forcing their spyware would be to make it work with servers that you would otherwise need to work with, such as a server that hosts Azure services or something. I imagine that they have US intelligence agencies have given them a "plato o plomo" proposition to harvest all this data. It sounds like it's been a disaster for them.
You block them. They will set up new servers and Windows Update will tell your computer to chat with them. You will block those, and they will set up new ones.
I absolutely refuse to install Windows 10 on my home computer because I don't want to look after my computer like a child who is getting "programmed" by a spiteful ex-spouse.
Just replace "cell phone" with "Nintendo", and this guy sounds just like my dad sounded growing up.

I will applaud when they say "class statement considered harmful in Javascript because it reinvents the wheel"

Do you have any thoughts to share on this?
Just as a person should never be ashamed of the color of his skin, a person should not be proud of the color of his skin, either.
But I thought they already had Microsoft, don't they?

Where are mod points when I need them. Mod up ^^^ informative!
They might want to hurry up with their October surprise. Here in Colorado, we do voting by mail and I just received my ballot the other day.

It's called "Arkancide"

I think that there is a certain irony in the fact that it was reported that a man was hauled into court in DACHAU for his speech on Facebook.
I really envy your European life where you can be hauled in to court and jailed for speaking critically of EU immigration policy.
