  7. Why Music, If you want to know. on Why Only Music? · · Score: 1

I think that music is the "art" form that can be most easily ripped off and then completely refabricated (in this case played) for the end user. You may not want to read a book on screen or on printer paper, there is something substatial and satisfying about the book itself. As DVD copiers become more common and people don't have to watch movies that are grainy on their computer the movie industry may catch up with music.

The technology just supports the duplication of the art form better at this point time, The other major ingredient being the amount of money available (or at risk depending on your point of view) in the industry.

  14. Re:Sound familar? I'll say the same thing I did th on NASA Test Shows Foam Could Be Culprit · · Score: 3, Insightful

Why would NASA be shooting the piece of foam at the wing of the shuttle at "about 850 km (530 miles) hour" (sic.)?! The shuttle is going slowly when just taking off in the relatively dense atmosphere of the surface of the earth. As it picks up speed in the thinner upper atmosphere it is also in an environment with less friction.

The initial report that I remembered hearing, within days of the catastrophe, was that the shuttle was already doing around 1900/mph, when the foam detached and hit the wing. It (the shuttle) was probably still greatly accelerating at that point, and devoid of thrust, an oddly shaped, and "relatively" light piece of foam would probably gain some relevant kinetic energy by the time it contacted the wing. I haven't heard any more recent information on the speed of the shuttle at the time of the contact.

  17. Re:False Positive on missile defense on Most Powerful Amateur Rocket in Canada · · Score: 1

Yes I am aware of that, the first part of my comment was somewhat facetious. I suppose most of the NORAD radar systems to be somewhat north of anywhere that an amateur launch would take place, as I believe they mainly watched for an attack of the North Pole.

I do think that given the current world situation and the dim view given to anything resembling a terrorist attack that launching 16 foot rockets, even in a secluded area, would eventually attract some scrutiny.

  22. Re:Change of perspective, but working hard on Working Hard? · · Score: 1

It's still pretty far from slavery, but it's headed in the wrong direction. I hear talk on unionization of technical and other professionals, for bargaining purposes, but this would almost have to be done on a global scale, with the ability to move high tech work overseas. As long as people are willing to work harder for less, for themselves or even to benefit their country this type of problem can exist.

I'm not an advocate of older failed systems, such as communisim or some form of socialism, and I certainly don't have any answers right now.

You can't win, You Can't break even, You can't even quit the game

  23. Change of perspective, but working hard on Working Hard? · · Score: 1

I'm an IT professional that was laid for a while, though I've been back to work for about a year now, so I count myself luckier than many out there. I'm working as a contractor. I'm making less than I was before, getting less time off, and working harder.

The work is generally more fun right now as I'm more technical than management. The company is not allowing overtime at this point, but with new laws, even that possibility might go away. You end up working more hours than 40 anyway to keep your job, but not reporting them.

Being off of work for a while changes your perspective on how hard you're willing to work to keep a job.
