  2. "Reverse Racism" == Spoiled Brats on First Nations Want Cellphone Revenue · · Score: 1

To all those who point to the corruption or the abuse of rights granted, and to all those who argue that the tribes have had plenty of time to acclimate and assimilate, you're missing the point. Yes, there are assholes in any human tribe: white, black, brown, yellow, red. Yes, politicians and leaders of any nation or any government tend to be corrupt.

But none of that changes the fact of what any sovereign nation is owed.

The rights granted to natives in tribal lands are not about reparation for the wrongs of the past. It's about compromising and living together. They lived here first, and even though they fought wars with each other, as people have fought wars throughout history, doesn't matter. Europeans came to these shores and fought their own wars with the tribes who were here. Some of them were peaceful, others were not. It's irrelevant. What IS relevant is that they have been granted sovereign status because they want to govern themselves, by their own laws, and live independently. And because they were here first the governments of Canada and the US have honored their wishes to some very small* extent. That's it. They don't want to assimilate or acclimate. They don't want to live in the past; they don't need to be "modernized". They simply want to be recognized as sovereign, self-governing people. No one owes them anything except what was negotiated by the treaties which allow them to live independently and by their own terms. And maybe respect, but that's up to you to decide.

If they are a sovereign nation, they may have a right to licensing fees or profits from commercial activity in their airspace. IANAL, so I leave it for a court to decide, but I cannot dismiss the claim as reverse racism like so many others apparently can.

Sorry, I have gone a very long time without posting, and this is probably a flame, but anytime I hear "reverse racism" I think of a spoiled boy or girl complaining because they didn't get a pony for their birthday, so they think they suddenly understand hardship.

*I say small because the tribes near me in the southwestern US have been given mostly shitty, arid land that no one else wanted at the time. They can't farm it effectively, and hunting and fishing is severely limited. I don't blame them for opening casinos and scamming the tourists. What else are you gonna do? Harvest dust? I hear they have embraced alsoholism to help pass the time, so that must be ok then.

An idea struck me the other day. I've been thinking about what I consider to be our broken democracy for several years now, and I've half-ass considered writing A New Constitution, just as a personal writing project really. It's an intriguing thought.

  9. Survival! on Geeks Playing Poker? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I've been playing poker since I was proably 5 or 6 years old. Growing up , when we visited my grandparents' house my dad, my grandfather and my uncle always played poker in another room while my mom helped my grandmother in the kitchen. I bothered them until they let me play, but their condition was that I had to put up my own money. Betting your allowance against a bunch of guys who really would take it and not feel sorry for you makes you think pretty seriously about strategy, odds and winning.

ALB sells lunchcards that get around the per song CC transaction fees nicely. Seriously, this service is great. I don't like stealing, and I don't like RIAA extortion. I do like supporting artists over corporations. I don't mind $.99 per song one bit. My favorite recent buys are Muggs (of Cypress Hill fame, or for the truly old school 7A3) and The Black Keys. Seriously, give these a listen; one is dark downtempo, the other is outstandingly gritty blues.

  14. Re:Insulting question on Switching from Another Industry to Engineering/CS? · · Score: 4, Insightful

I would feel honored, not insulted. Same as I feel about someone asking about entering the computer industry. Curiousity is nothing to be offended by. Just because they have little or no experience doesn't mean they have little or no appreciation and respect for what you do.

As for the question, my recommendations are: 1) Have plenty of reserve cash. I hope the industry is better in 5 or 10 years, but even if it is you'll need money while you train and take those entry level jobs. 2) Experience is better than certifications. You often need the latter before anyone will let you get the former, but if anyone offers you ANY job remotely related to the field you're interested in, take it. On the job experience builds your skills and your contacts. 3) Combine your interests. The things that stand out most on your resume are not your certifications or even your IT experience (though both are often required), but the other interesting things about you. For instance, I entered IT from a background as a high school teacher. Know what? Most employers find that background tremendously valuable and look to me as a trainer.

    Best of luck to you!

  20. Re:The interesting bit... on RIAA Extends Legal Action · · Score: 1

I think you missed the point of my post. I don't condone the general principle of piracy, but in my view it IS a symptom that the market isn't meeting customer demand. Demand for what? Good music for a fair price, minus the assloads of profit being intercepted by a middle man without a creative bone in his body. The demand can be met, to which I hope services like iTunes attest.

He makes some good points, but ultimately he is wrong in his assertion that Linux is a process. The process he's referring to is actually the process of open source development. Linux does describe something tangible beyond a collaborative process, namely a very distinct operating system kernel. There are other distinct kernels, and there are other open source projects that have everything to do with the identical process by which Linux is developed but absolutely nothing to do with Linux proper.

I'm not sure about that. Can you imagine if Novell had announced this 2 years ago? Linux lovers would have praised them, but no one else would have taken them seriously because so few people took Linux seriously. It would have been another questionable product/marketing move from Novell.

Now, however, Linux has tons of mind share, and we also know why Novell got involved with the SCO train wreck.
