  3. Patrols on Somali Pirates Open Up a "Stock Exchange" · · Score: 1

It seems to me the easiest way to deal with this is for the shipping companies to hire independent patrol ships, it wouldn't cost very much to be escorted through dangerous waters by an armed patrol boat that forms a safe perimeter around the ship...

this also has the added bonus of solving the problem of oil tankers not being able to have weapons fired on board due to the volatility of their cargo and it solves the problem of certain ports not allowing armed ships, the patrol boat simply anchors off shore in international waters and waits for the cargo ship to re-embark.

I think of gold as more of an "emergency currency" rather than a money making investment...

Historically (most recently Zimbabwe) when a country has a total currency collapse, gold and silver are quickly adopted by the grass roots as an alternative currency because of the inbuilt trust in its value... people are positive that its a relatively scarce commodity, and therefore of some value.

So surviving a crash becomes about having enough food to get you through the first 2-3 months of wrecked commerce, and then having the currency that is currently being used to buy your necessities after that.

  7. Re:Try Express PCB on Circuit Board Design For a Small Startup? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Indeed, there is a story of a toy developer that had a Chinese company design a motorized toy that had some simple microcontroller logic on it. The toy was designed for young children and would basically move around in a preset pattern and respond to some simple stimulus.
The company chopped apart the design so much they ended up running the motor straight from the stamp with no flyback diode...

needless to say, when little kiddies on Christmas morning started rolling the toy with a little force, the back emf fried the stamps...

    ouch

the lesson here is, if you pay to have that work done, at least hire a known contractor to check the circuit for design defects.

i also read a lot of Andre Norton, very good stuff. I can vividly remember in sixth grade discovering the sci-fi fantasy section of my grade school library, up until that point i had read stories here and there and new what i liked, but i had NO idea there was a complete genre (heck, i didn't even know what a genre WAS!) that i could read!

As sappy as it may sound, i sometimes wish i could go back to those days, the stories were so fresh and exciting, i must have read every sci-fi book in the library...

on that note you might want to see if one of your local grade schools has a library with a Sci-fi/ Fantasy section, its a veritable wealth of pre-teen appropriate material

On a more specific note, one of the series i remember vividly was "The Tripod Trilogy" by John Christopher, it must have been good if i remember it 20 years later

Ont thing to point out here is that home remdies (ie. medicines made from common or uncommon plant extracts, insect exctracts ect ect.) can and do work...

its foolish to say "Well that remdy has never been tested by a man in a white coat therefore use of it constitutes as quackery" ...Now AFTER the home medicine has been thoroughly tested using the scientific method, and its proven NOT to work, then using said product is quackery.

for example, i have terrible acid reflux, and before i started taking Prilosec (i'm stubborn and hate going to the doctor :-/ ) i found that chewing a piece of gum after eating seemed to calm my stomach more than taking an antacid tablet... this could be called a home remedy, well low an behold i read an article the other night that showed a study done proves that chewing gum is like 10% more effective against heartburn and acid refulx than an antacid tablet.

So was i a quack before the study, and not one after?
