And the reason for that is that far too often guys are immature assholes. If you just want to play and not have to deal with "pix now" all the time laying low is the only way. And it does not matter if the guys are joking, its tiring just having to hear it. I have seen many women flaunt their gender for the attention at first only to regret it later and often end up leaving the game.
Why dont you write to them and ask if they were invited to the club by the good programmers of their time. There are far too many n00bs looking for someone to hand things to them. I am sure the next good programmer is already out there, and he/she is reading "books, online, and other" instead of bothering the current good programmers. The books do have the answers to your questions, until you have caught up to the current level of knowledge and can ask interesting questions you should just stick to studying and working hard on your own, its the only way really. There are skilled people out there who are willing to answer your trivial questions though, most places they are called teachers, and they get payed for it(but not enough).
I much prefer hard games, the harder the better. I am playing through Ninja Gaiden Black on very hard atm and its almost there, master ninja should be perfect.
Easy games just are not worth the time, if anyone can do it, and I am guarenteed to be able to beat it, unless there is a real and engaging story there is no point in playing, even with a story if it takes longer than reading a book to grind through it than it is not worth it.
For multiplayer games the motivation is a little different, either for fun playing with other people, or to show them I can do it and they can not, and rub it in.
Back to Ninja Gaiden Black. It has one of the hardest first bosses ever, you have to fail 3 times against him to unlock ninja dog(easy) mode and even then any single enemy can kill you fairly quickly, but it is possible to beat the game at the hardest difficulty with any weapon without ever getting hit. No one has done this yet, only parts of it but you know its there if you could play flawlessly. If you are playing to just play the game this makes it very open and lets you set your own goals ended despite the story itself being very linear.
If the focus is the story, and the game play is not critical to it than a safer game might be the right way to go, but if the beauty is in playing it than it should be difficult enough to give you time to appreciate that.
I would not say that/. is necessarily very far from conservative but/. is very *rational* as a group of people with a strong technical and/or scientific background.
They are on the way to destruction, they have no chance to survive, make your time...
Because China, India, and other countrys with looser restrictions and engrish spelling/grammar are going to take over, change is constant and those that do not adapt will die.
Had some interesting points come in a discussion about this and thought I would share.
Soultron: your bandwidth stream is not your property Soultron: it's their property on their network Kattana: Is your car on a road not your property because you dont own the road? Quaoar: eh, analogies between information and tangible objects tend to break down Kattana: Is your mail not your mail when it leaves your mailbox? Quaoar: better Kattana: much better, since its illegal to open mail in most cases. Quaoar: of course, the argument there is that mail is handled by a public entity. Soultron: is a cop allowed to stop your car and inspect it? is the post office allowed to inspect mail? Kattana: and it contains your information. Soultron: tampering with mail is only a crime when a private citizen does it Kattana: cops and post office workers are _goverment_ employees Quaoar: but the total "privateness" of telcoms is up for debate. They're one of the more involved corporate sectors in government business. Quaoar: Soul, only if they have probable cause or a warrant/court order/whathaveyou of that sort. On both questions. Kattana: AT&T is a private entity, they should not be allowed to open your packets any more than your packages.
PS, anyone know what laws apply to private mail carriers such as FedEX? are they even "mail carriers"? PPS, I am posting chat in a comment posted on/. and that amuses me, if only I had a blog to quote it in.

There is a real problem lately with everyone seeing everything in black and white, victims and pedophiles, terrorists and patriots, Us VS Them.
Parent not funny, insightful. Presenting the RIAA with a truck load of copied 20s to compensate them would be a nice political stunt. Especialy should a surprised label rep blurt out something like "but these copys are worthless, you can just print out as many as you want for basicly nothing", if copys are worthless they arent losing them money, and who is it thats stamping out cds for 3c and selling them for $20?
And to tie this into the other issues, ignoring the cost in money - what about the energy required for the life support, should fossil fuels be burned indefinetly, adding to global warming to produce the energy to keep a mere piece of flesh alive.
Resources are finite and precious, and waste is another enourmous and still growing problem.
Philosophy and Computer Science are related in that Philosophers seek to explain us, our thoughts and motives and position in life and record their reasoning in a precise language, and Programmers attempt to codify the thoughts and methods they reason out while explaining and solving the problems they face.
Dont rely on numbers alone when looking at the situation.
Sony invested/is investing their revenue in the CELL architechture and blu-ray.
Microsoft already launched their console and games and is showing profit from that.
(and although its not really relevant, M$ makes their money on overpriced software which isnt going to be going so good looking at vista, whereas sony actualy makes alot of things, many of which require investment in manufacturing)
Dont stop there, sometimes long witty satire and elaborate artwork are not practical but that should not stop you from spreading freedom of speech, use ascii artwork and protest terror whereever you go online, for example here is a depiction of the prophet Mohammad:

I think the curly braces give him a nice bearded look, and feel free to copy and/or build on this work.
Also, if you happen to be located somewhere with seasonal snow I encourage you to draw mohammad in the snow at every oportunity and encourage others to do the same, how you draw is up to you;)
If there is no snow in your area, mud, dust, sand, dirt, grease, or any number of other substances could be used as a substitute, dirty windows especialy usualy serve well as a canvas.
As many others have pointed out the networks themselves are not that expensive, the networks, include\ing upstream of the ISP's are over priced.
Every fraction of a second the lines are dark is investment lost, it costs a fixed ammount to install, and small cost of electricity to run the network, if its not being used than the capacity is wasted.
If north american ISP's would live up to the high bandwidth - fibre, true broadband they have been promising there would be no problem with quality of service, no problem with high bandwidth apps. south korea and japan have 100mbit, 1gbit networks, 10 and 100mbit is available in many places in europe, if ISP's in north america would stop being driven by short term profit and invest something in the infrastructure as other places have done, even if its only 10/10mbit to the customers and new backbones, all the issues around bandwidth scarcity would virtualy dissapear.
Software and computers are tools, if you are going to working with any tool at the very least you need to learn its name and function, if you were to be asembling some contraption you might not know every type of screwdriver off the top of your head but when the instructions say to screw the screws in you will need to know what they are talking about.
"Torx" screws/drivers are not named very intuitivly, but like good software should their function is included in/after the name. Unlike screws software does not have a shape you can use to describe it, you need to know the name if you are going to use it.
(think calling someone to pass you "star/cross/flat" screwdriver, if you do not know gimp/photoshop/ie/firefox there is no similar way to call out to the computer to find what you are looking for, running a search is just as inconvenient as going to look in the toolbox yourself)
And sometimes much more quickly that you would care to know.
And the reason for that is that far too often guys are immature assholes.

Exactly, I see the estimate as similar to estimated time to walk somewhere, it assumes you are in good healthy shape.
But no other resource has such a random assortment of uneducated writers creating it so it is a lot more likely to be accepted as original work.

Yes, play chess or some form of sport, no one was ever injured in a sport, maybe quail hunting is the game for you.

You forgot "and there was nothing wrong with droping nukes on japanese civilians".
