Yes, but I had no problem picking up Android, whether on phone or tablet. It's just intuitive. I didn't have the first fucking clue how I was supposed to use Unity to do anything. Windows 8 is worse because you now have to learn two completely different interfaces instead of one. I need a 'normal' interface on a 'normal computer' because I develop software, edit photographs, tag/copy mp3 files between devices, use one device to control another etc. Sure, if I were a user and had no need to actually create anything I'd use a tablet. But these desktop OSes (Windows 8, unity etc) will mostly be running on regular computers without touch screens, so i'm not sure of the utility of making this change. I'm sure Microsoft and Canonical believe that their OSes will soon be on millions of touch-enabled devices; I find this unlikely.
(BTW: You're the first AC I've responded to in years. Why haven't you created an account here? I almost didn't see your reply as I filter ACs away).
I switched to (Linux Mint 13) KDE precisely because I didn't want to learn a new interface (Unity). It's great. I used XFCE and LXDE previously, having read of their great suitability for lower end hardware, but..well, I don't have any low end hardware. I have nothing special but it runs KDE perfectly, and it looks great. I can't be bothered to learn all the ins and outs of it - I launch stuff via what I'll always call the 'start menu' or shortcuts or from the 'task bar' - but it's good to know that there's more to it if I could be bothered to learn it. The point is, nobodies forcing me to use it. There seem to be a rash of these Mac-like OSes these days (including the hilarious Windows 8) - I don't quite understand the appeal.
I've never seen a DX. Do they still make them? Can you buy them in the UK? It sounds ideal for this sort of thing - just show the pages as-is.
I have no idea why PDFs are such a dog to work with. I mean, I appreciate that it's a shitty format which wasn't designed to (re)flow, but how hard can it be to handle this adaptation in software? I'm sure you can come up with pathological cases which are tricky, but most ebooks I've seen would appear to be `text here..picture here...header/footer/page numbers where you'd expect them to be`. Problem?
Nobody cares what is happening in Syria. Think of all the headlines of the last few years about Libya, Egypt, Iraq etc etc. It's in the news for a few days/weeks then the focus of attention moves elsewhere. X killed, Y removed from power, Rebels are fighting government forces in Z. The internet is up, the internet is down, bloggers tweet about blah blah. So it goes on. Not saying it's not important to people in that area, or who know people who are affected. But people watch the news, generally, for entertainment, not facts. This story is only on Slashdot because of the internet angle. Currently it has 10 comments or so. I don't see it picking too many more up.
Oh yeah, the desktop browser - the one I used to use before switching pretty much exclusively to mobile browser. Do they still bother to compete with Chrome, Dolphin, and the stock Android browser? Last time I tried it was huge, clunky and setting up syncing of bookmarks was a joke (as opposed to, say, Chrome which just syncs up for you). I used to love FireFox but it just got bigger and slower; there's just no point any more.
"You wouldn't kill a policeman, and set fire to his widow's house...so why would you make your own lego pieces for your 2 year old daughter, instead of paying inexplicably high prices for what is effectively cheap plastic?"
I'm especially interested in articles that mention India and Facebook, because I've been reading Slashdot almost every day for over ten years, and frankly I've been getting sick of all the technical stuff about Android, Linux and so on, so all this crap about users and the problems they have half way around the world using shit websites that let them spout absolute and utter crap to anyone who'll listen to them is a pleasant relief. Perhaps I may suggest some posts about how hard some people in Peru find using chat software on windows 8, or maybe there are some small towns in New Zealand who are experiencing difficulties getting screen protectors for their new iPhones?
I posted from my phone, with handy word completion and spell checking, and for some reason Slashdot persists in not allowing edits to posts. You know what I meant....
The head of the SEA agrees all current drug laws are spot on and he expects, with his multi billion dollar annual budget, to announce the complete cessation of all illegal drug taking any day now.
Yeah, but this is exactly why people are starting to say Apple has run out of ideas. No-one's going to buy an Apple smartphone/tablet over a cheaper but almost identically specced Android alternative because of the way the fucking pages turn. Even assuming they are confident they own this patent and will win it, it's just yet another example of them missing the point of how stupid and impotent it makes them look. Don't they have maps to fix?
> someone posts something reasonable, well thought out, and well stated, and it gets modded funny.
It's funny. When I was younger I wasn't posting vile, racist nonsense. Neither were, in all probability, you. It's not the default state.
Not brought up properly. It's that simple. Point and laugh at them, and check them out extra closely when they're older to see if they're still peasant scum where the racism was just the tip of the iceberg, or whether some rare intervention has taken place and they now accept they were wrong.

MS still ignore it. They're more concerned with threats to their future profitability, and Linux is not - and will never - be. (And I say that as Linux & Windows user).
The pizza drivers pay for the ingredients, lose from the lack of space in the oven for genuine customers' pizzas etc? The drivers are paid anyway - all they're losing is the tip. But yeah, if you work for that sort of company there'll be disadvantages at all levels.
I'm going to order so many pizzas to be sent to random addresses with the name "sam spam" etc they're likely to get the message pretty quickly. Or perhaps not. But it's gonna cost them!
Sounds like a real asshole. Enjoy the domain why you can - it'll be taken from you, or it'll be rendered worthless when the responsible adults get their own domain. Either way it's worthless.
Ah! A meaningful reply to my post! I knew it had to happen eventually. (I realise that Slashdot isn't exactly the place to go for a discussion about 20th Century contemporary classical music, but I didn't quite appreciate how fully people are prepared to willfully revel in their ignorance.)
I noticed one of these twitter posts from Teller (the silent half of Penn and Teller) earlier today. I assumed it was a joke that I didn't understand, but it makes sense now.
I'm more than willing to make a statement in court to the effect that I assumed he was admitting to performing illegal acts if it helps in any subsequent lawsuit against the turd-like cretins who abused people's trust in their products by misrepresenting them publicly in this way.

Aren't all Americans of Irish Extraction? To listen to them you'd certainly get that impression.

You'll appreciate the cool blue tint of the screens of death.

Stop being horrible about Americans!

Lol! (I'm assuming this is intentional...)
I'm already a fan! "Ever since I'd been writing music I was dreaming of getting rid of the performers"!
