I agree with much of what you say with exception of "And what kind of intensive care unit is "shut down" when they can't use computers?". The acute shortage of bedside nurses elevates computers and networks to a big player in short staffed ICU's. Patient to nurse ratios are improved because of computers. Sure the ICU can continue to function but things would be hectic and possibly deadly for some patients.
It's been mentioned before but the US government (not just the NSA) employs many IT/IS professionals and many of the positions require security clearance which can only be granted to US citizens. These jobs cover the gamut from weapons to environmental. Much of the US government tech market was unaffected by the dot.com draw down. Nobody gets rich but it's a living.
First they merge with adult TV programming with MS-NBC to insure US news is fair and objective. Now they want to do the same for the MTV generation(s). At least Microsoft does not limit predetory practices to software anymore. Diversification is the key to survival.
Since the link between science and the technology of war or peace, depending on your perspective, are entwined why can't it be used for alternative purpose? The fact my microwave oven had it's roots in defense does not stop me from using it.
Crackers need care and feeding. When they can no longer get what they need from maturing operating systems the move on. In other words, nothing to see here. move along.
Fiber is a step above copper with respect to infrastructure security. While this doesn't have implications for everyone plenty of businesses and government agencies require that level of security.
Will Ron Hovsepian be different than many other high powered COO's in the long run? What if he fails to resurect Novell, he will be paid either handsomely as a saviour or bid adieu with a seperation package. Either way he will be far better than the pink slip recipients. It's never about the little guy when stockholders are involved. Even when those laid off deserved to be.
FUD. Science must progress and if testing with 'real' virii is the answer and the risk than what are the choices, really? We wait for the research to be done on us but by the wrong people? I for one welcome my forward leaning overloads.
You are learning to think critically and hone problem solving skills. CS is not computer programming alone. The biggest problem in computer design is and always will be applying the best solution to a problem within the constraints allowed.
Any given day I can think of numerous diversions preferable to going to the movies. DVD's are out so quickly I never feel like I missed anything by not seeing films on the big screen. Except for LOTR that is...
Agreed. While Slashdot is not always the epitome of intellectual fodder this is irrelevant by any standards. Sheesh, give me a break. I'd rather read Harry Potter...
Not to start a flamewar (well maybe a little) - OSS will need to meet the challenge of managing all of the little details of a widely acceted OS. Red Hat is grapling with that problem now with some suceess. Having what you believe to be a better widget is not enough.
The sheer amounts of cash microsoft has at its disposal distorts all things including politics. The recent Gattes world health initiatives and other gestures of good will insure M$ remains a dandy in the eye of the general public. Now their enemies are another story...
but where I live it seems most of the cars on the road are self driven. The person behind the wheel is usually taking care of more pressing things like chatting on the phone, eating, putting on makeup, etc.
I agree and I paid $27 for the deluxe version which includes state return. I've used TT for 5 years and, with the exception of the licensing crap they pulled last year, have been satisfied. All personal data is imported and correct.

True but this if free as in beer and as in $0.

It may be a niche market but what a market it is. Rock on Linux!

and the final chapter is a beach chair, foo-foo drink and still no respect. I'll take it!

One of the super secret benefits of the internet is the way the seemingly unconnected can be connected.
Could just be all a rumor...

Nobody ever got fired for choosing Microsoft.

All I can think of is the timeless Graucho Marx line 'I wouldn't be a member of any country club that would have me as a member'.
Cuban libre?

but the simplicity and consistency of the Mac was its strength. Not sure about that 1 button mouse though...
It's really a matter of money and time.
