    All of the materials are currently available to construct one.

    Except by "all" you actually mean "all except a material capable of being formed into miles and miles of superstrong tether".

    Material science isn't there yet. Closer than ever before, yes, but not there.

    Not so much. But if they change the graphics, they can sell the false hope that usability has improved.

    I would rather concentrate on building technology and common sense (don't build a city below water level - for example).

    Or just the opposite, build a city below sea level...100 feet below sea level. Hurricanes don't do nearly so much damage beneath the waves. That'd be some real innovation in building technology.

    You could make the same argument about other games (some online, some not) with high replay value too.

    How many weeks or months have many people spent playing Counterstrike or Q3A or UT2004? The only games I've bought since UT2004 came out were PopCap games for a few friends. Or Civilization I/II/III? Weeks and weeks of my life have disappeared to that trio.

    It's not about the monthly fee eating up your game budget. If you're consumed with playing something else, you're not likely to run out and buy a new game.

    Wait...wait...I've got a new one... We take a straight-laced cop, and hold on, get this, we pair him with a fast-talking wise guy for a few days. By the end of the story they learn to respect each other. Please don't tell anybody my idea, the script isn't quite finished yet.

    "We" have never been more concerned with society than with ourselves. Quite a few individuals might have been, but the bulk of "us" just read the paper to see what new technology was coming down the pipe.

    And the 50's and 60's were all about getting the newest TV. (Not unlike the current HD mania.)

    Technology may change rapidly, but people do not.

    But the US is plagued with vehicles that get poor gas mileage and on average US citizens drive more miles. The total travel cost is probably about even between the two countries even if we pay less per gallon.

    Really both pay about the same for oil. It's just that the UK taxes their petrol a lot more than US taxes their gas.

    a)the earth's magnetic field does reverse every so often, b)we're overdue (by a huge margin) and c)we probably would be slightly fucked, because during the flip, we'd have no protection from cosmic and solar radiation.

    I'm good. I've got extra tinfoil stockpiled.

    Try Gigabyte cards. They have a wide selection of cards with heatsinks/heatpipes only. Not quite the top model, but still fast enough for most.

    You're under 25 aren't you?

    Nobody who actually used an Atari 2600 or Atari computer would ever want to go back to cartridges. The connectors get worn out after repeated use and you wind up playing 'wiggle the slot'. Sure, that sounds great to most Slashdotters, but it's not.
