Being a Northwest Florida resident whose power was out for four days, I can definitely vouch for the fact that it gets HOTTER when the power goes out...
(fyi...most people from around here are stunned to hear that they sell houses up north without air conditioning. "What are they, INSANE?")
Scarily enough, I can see this happening. I'm a retail sales drone [I know, I know; I'm a USEFUL drone, though.] at RadioShack, and I can see Corporate jumping and down, rubbing their collective hands together in glee at the thought of a system that self-regulates like this.
Imagine Intel's overlocking locks, to the nth degree. yeah.
Hate to burst your bubble, but most of the cops [at least where I live - Okaloosa County, in Northwest Florida] have already moved to laser-based detection methods, which essentially turns your radar detector into an impending speeding ticket detector...
Just because some animals are too weak to defend themselves, doesn't give us the right to kill them. Nor does it give us the right to build a robot that kills them.
Incidentally, Han Solo boasted about doing the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs because that particular area is rampant with black holes. The longer the route, the longer the travel time and the greater chance of getting caught. Thus, the length of the route that was taken through the Kessel [what was it, a cluster? system?] was a reflection of skill.
As a community college student, I can attest to the fact that books and tuition for fifteen hours at my local community college to put me on a Computer Engineering track cost a grand total of $1100. In florida, all you have to do is practically BREATHE to get 75% of your tuition paid by a state scholarship. If you apply yourself, your tuition and books are covered by the state. Which means you pay, about, uhm...Yes, that's right. Nothing. I'm not sure whether Florida is just the coolest state in the world, or whether this sort of thing takes place in other states. But let's not start the "the poor children can't go to college" rant.
Thanks. [The program is called Bright Futures, by the way, if you feel like googling.]
For a minute, I could've SWORN I heard the BOFH reading this paragraph aloud, then advising some poor sap to pour gasoline all over their floor, because the hydrocarbons will interact with the zinc......and then lighting the floor on fire, killing the unsuspecting luser...
C'mon, how much meaner can we GET?? We post a site that's (1) about pirates, which are inherently cool, (2) got a picture of a real-life AYBABTU sign (both of these make it a primary Slashdotting candidate) (3) is ALREADY involved in protesting because they need more bandwidth-- and we post this on our front page.
It's like inviting the WHOLE frikkin' horde of Viking^H^H^H^H^H^HSlashdot barbarians to bang on their gates. In the words of a certain GalaxyQuest character: "Those poor people..."
...of course, toy story didn't say that there's a Toy Heaven. I'm just implying it. My Capsela set is in Toy Heaven, along with an Etch-a-Sketch, a Spirograph and the coolest EVER 8-wheeled remote controlled, programmable tank - complete with firing LED "Laser" and such:)...I hate growing up....oh, except for girls;)
YES! That was quite possibly the coolest thing EVER. I had a decent Capsela set when I was growing up, and I absolutely loved it:) Sadly, my engine modules burnt out from age and love.
It's toys like these that convince me that Toy Story is true, and that not only do toys live, but good toys really do go to a toy heaven:)
Being from Florida, this slightly unnerves me. But realistically, you have to consider a few things:
1) Although taxes suck, where in the Constitution does it say that US citizens are immune from stupid, absurd, overbearing, or even intolerable taxation? All we are guaranteed is representation. Am I missing something in this, or did we give the Government permission back in 1787 (Constitution ratified) to tax us in whichever way seemed best to our representation?
2) While this doesn't affect businesses, Florida has no personal state income tax (go us!). So at least folk in NW Florida, life is wild, rich and largely tax-free.
3) If the FL legislature decided to find a way to do this, the most logical way to do it would be to place an additional tax on all network hardware sold or shipped to FL, and grant an amnesty to all existing, in-place hardware.

No, no, only I can say that and get modded up =)

Yes, it does.
Didn't you ever read Darwin?

...I'm never getting laid.
I don't know about y'all, but I use my 256 MB USB Duck.
I wish I hadn't commented already so that I could mod you effing HILARIOUS.
Nice. Election-Comment-Free Thread Life is down to 7 posts...[of course this IS a story involving France, so it'd probably be bad data anyway...]
for more info, check my history, I guess.

...just as a thought - make sure your ports are USB 2.0 ports.
On that note, is there a firewire solution?
...you got something against obscure Eastern European art films? HUH? DO YA?!
Cause if you do, I'll have to [comment truncated]

Fremen. Dune characters were Fremen.
...maybe not, but I paid my latest speeding ticket ($55) in quarters!
Bastards got me back, though; they made me wrap them all and put my name on every single roll...
...ironically, the CAPS LOCK key generally DOESN'T work as an ANY key. Neither do shift, alt, control, num lock, scroll lock...yeah, and all them.
If you're in a DOS variant or an *NIX, the Windows key don't do squat for an ANY key either...
As a parenthetical aside, Taco Bell (at least the ones here in NW Florida) still uses SCO OpenServer to run our POS systems on.
Which, I suppose, makes it a PoS PoS. But I digress.

Oh, good, it's about time we got those nanotech factories in our homes. I plan to use mine to build that flying car...
...obviously! So the search engine that nobody pays to use gets props from the techhie news subscription service that nobody *has* to pay to use.
Yup, I smell a conspiracy.

hmm.
