  1. WHAT ABOUT DEFENSE?? on Instead of Revamping Hubble, Replace It · · Score: 1

That's the price of another stealth bomber. What are we going to do without another stealth bomber???? Christ, we'll lose the war on terror! We can't lose the war on terror! Our enemies will think we're weak if spend money on anything but weapons!!!

  2. Re:Not Flamebait - Mod Up! on U.S. Kids Don't Understand First Amendment · · Score: 1

Accurate, but still largely ignored. Check out Fox News "Asman Observer" on what "lessons" we can apply to Iraq that we learned in El Salvador. Chilling stuff. Also, for more background on what training went into all this, google "School of the Americas" and read about THAT place.

  4. Blizzard isn't Sony on No More Players for World of Warcraft - For Now · · Score: 1

So treating them like they have unlimited manpower and funds is ridiculous. Yes, it could have been planned better. Yes, there are problems. But half the reason FFXI and Galaxies stay up is because there are unlimited resources to pour behind them. If it were Sony that were having this problem, they would NEVER pull the game from the shelves. They would just keep shipping as many as they could sell and expect people to suffer through the problems because they have no choice.

  5. My Parents on Mac mini Dissection · · Score: 1

Okay, this computer isn't designed for /. regulars. It designed for people like my parents. If you told, say, my mom she could spend 100 bucks on a computer (but she has to put it together) or 600 bucks on the SAME computer (that came assembled), it wouldn't be a contest. 600, just to avoid headache. They don't know the diff between Firewire 400 and 800, if they even know what firewire is period (or if they care, which of course they don't). I'm assuming this is the point of the mini-mac. No, I KNOW this is the point of the mini-mac, just as Jobs said in his keynote. Debating about what this doesn't have is like bitching that the KIA you drive doesn't have DVD navigation.

  6. Nice review, but... on Review: Burnout 3 - Takedown · · Score: 1

The game's been out for months. Why does this constitute front page item? Yeah, it's great- but most of us gamers have beaten it months ago. Looking forward to review of Halo 2 now, I guess.

  7. Insurance? on We Pay Our Rent By Buying Coffee · · Score: 1

Cool product. We're downloading it tonight to try it out. I don't know the legal issues involved, but it seems like a product like this could be ideal for insurance cataloging. You have a fire, get robbed, what have you, everything is right there, values and all. Could be really cool.

  8. Re:Competition goes bye bye on EA Obtains Exclusive NFL Licensing Rights · · Score: 1

You're right- the phrasing I used was misleading. I meant that the 20 dollar price tag was new for this year, not the game itself.

  9. Competition goes bye bye on EA Obtains Exclusive NFL Licensing Rights · · Score: 5, Insightful

I'm sure this has nothing to do with Sega's almost superior (and 30 dollars cheaper) ESPN football debuting this year... I see someone's posted that since Madden's the best game anyway, it doesn't matter. Well, it does matter, since being the only game in town doesn't exactly provide incentive to improve- or do anything but offer gamers the same thing every year with barely cosmetic changes.

A vast majority of Spain's population was against the war to begin with. Of course they were going to vote out the government that didn't listen to anything they said. Not fighting a war that has nothing to do with you and is supported by shaky, constantly changing rationales is not "cowering in fear". It's sensible.

  12. Too much available online to go with PC Mags on What Magazines Do You Read? · · Score: 1

As far as PC Mags go... hmm. I don't really buy them anymore. I'll flip through PC World and whatnot, but honestly, most of the reasons I'd buy a PC Magazine are now addressed online- from product reviews to software help to what have you.

  13. Um, AP stories can be edited. on Supreme Court Rules Against Anti-Porn Law · · Score: 1

AP stories are given to papers and can then be edited for phrasing and the like. I've actually compared several Fox ap stories to their counterparts in other sources- fox routinely edits the language and omits quotations. Changing "suicide bomber" to "homicide bomber" is one glaring example. I've also seen them remove quotes critical to certain people that were in the original AP report.

  17. Price dropped on Yahoo Boosts Email Space in response to Gmail · · Score: 1

as well. I'd been paying 29.99 per year for Yahoo Plus, with their huge half page blinking ads and 25 meg storage. The price dropped to 19.99 and now there's 2 gigs worth of space on there. They also added a "search email" button. So, if nothing else good comes from Gmail, at least the other providers are on the track to giving up more services. Hotmail hasn't followed suit yet, but I'm sure it's coming.

  19. If he doesn't, someone will- on What Keeps You Off of Windows? · · Score: 1

One of the problems, in my opinion, is that when a business goes public, "mission statements" and all of that go right out the window. It becomes soley and entirely about money. That's just the way it is. After that point, it's almost futile to blame the CEO for the way the business is run. Think of Nike's experience with sweatshops. Yes, Phil Knight let it happen. But could he stop it now, even if he wanted to? No. If he suddenly "got ethics", he would be replaced within 24 hours with someone who didn't. It 's a slippery slope- when you start down the road with something like what Microsoft has done, nothing on Earth is going to stop it. People will be put in place to do what has to be done to make money, pure and simple. Bill Gates doesn't answer to Bill Gates. He answers to extremely wealthy, powerful men and women who want to stay that way. His involvement is inconsequential as long as the money keeps flowing.

  21. Regulate what? on Should The FCC Be Abolished? · · Score: 2, Insightful

The FCC, like the Environmental Protection Agency, are ostensibly designed for the benefit of the citizens. This, obviously, has not been the case. Both of these agencies have been used to further very distinct agendas- from excising passages on global warming from its year end reports to giving Rupert Murdorch Carte Blanche while attacking XM Radio and Howard Stern... Would that the FCC actually regulated the market. That could prove useful. What it's doing now, however, is tilting scales with gold. Get rid of it.

  23. Stop with the hyperbole, please on How The Government Spies On Your Internet Use · · Score: 1

Sadaam murdered his own people with our knowledge and consent, so don't go looking for the high ground there. There is also absolutely no proof or evidence he offered any assistance to other countries for actions against the united states- much less terrorist groups. So say he was a bad guy, fine- but we're talking about a premptive war. About acting a nation that did not carry out any agressive act against us. That is fact. I would imagine a lot of countries could use that same justification to launch a "preemptive attack" against us. What would we call, though? Terrorism. The sanctions against Iraq killed more civilians than Sadaam could ever dream about. And no, he wasn't a threat to us. It feels good to think that he was- that this was justified- but he wasn't, and it isn't.

  24. Handwriting to Digital Tablet on Device for Taking Travel Notes? · · Score: 1

I don't know if this fits the bill- I never used one myself, though I thought it was an intriguing idea. It was a legal tablet, small and large size, that sat on a half-inch thick black "clipboard". This clipboard recorded all the handwriting done on the paper and saved it to its memory, where you could transfer it to your computer later. It had a row of buttons across the top- when you ripped a page off or started a new one, you pushed the "new page" button and the device bookmarked where your page started and ended. You could use any legal pad on the device, and it could hold a lot of pages before you uploaded your writing to your computer. Don't know if this is something you'd be interested in- I haven't seen one in a awhile, but I'm sure Ebay has a couple.
