  1. VoIP won't die, it will grow and change on Australia Trials Phone To IP Service · · Score: 1

The important thing to remember when switching from PTSN to VoIP is to not rely on VoIP as your main means of communication to the outside world. Always have a backup (at least a pre-paid cell phone) in case of emergency. The reliability compared to PTSN isn't there, and I have no problem accepting that. I try to explain to everyone to be aware of the risks, that VoIP is not regulated the same way (if at all) as PTSN, and to think of VoIP as a cell phone; you're not always going to be able to use it.

I can see where 911 calling could be an issue, though. VoIP will grow and change as needed. When security becomes an issue, it will change one way or another.

I was going to mod you down for acting a bit like a troll, but I'll reply instead.

The first sentence was arrogant. While it does give me a certain amount a pride to be able to do something most people can't, I don't flaunt it, simply because there are a billion other things people can do better than me (like stay in shape).

The second sentence is insightful. I've gone through several Gentoo installs; it has taken me 4 tries to get a good Gentoo install on my server (i.e., when I reboot the system doesn't fail). Fortunately, after I finished the third, I was able to get Gentoo running on my desktop, too. To say it was a learning experience is a definite understatement; it changed the whole way I think about computers. Above all, what has helped me most in installing Gentoo is having 2 PCs and a kvm switch.

The third sentence is an opinion. The docs do not work for every setup; in fact, they are a guideline, and will absolutely work for most setups.

    Insightful eh?

Opera may be smaller, and better in some respects, but your gripe about the adblocker in Forefox is unfounded. The right regular expression (per website of course) for the 'adblock' extension will block ads but not images. Hell, even "*ad*" would block nearly all ads but block almost no images (assuming you never came across 'ad' anywhere in a legimiate image url).

You might be thinking of the built-in function of Firefox, "Block images from [site]". Besides, even if you were to use said built-in function, it would block the site serving the ads, like doubleclick, mediaplex, etc., and not images originating on the site you're looking at. There's also this neat little function that will only load images for originating site (in Options/Preference, under Web Features, check "for the originating site only").

Let's take your "local newspaper" as an example since you seem to use it. Say "Pittsburgh Business Times" (which is where you live according to your website). Here's a url titled "Sales Power":
    http://www.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/salespower/? jst=s_ep_lk
Now of course, if you were to block http://*bizjournals* then you would block all images coming from that site (don't want that), although that still wouldn't block any ads that didn't originate on the site anyways. Let's take a look at a doubeclick url:
    http://ad.doubleclick.net/click;h=v3|325f|c|19c|%2 a|f;14707869;0-0;0;11022531;4252-336|280;9249835|9 267731|1;;~sscs=%3fhttp://dc.bizjournals.com/event .ng/Type=click&FlightID=8876&AdID=12748&TargetID=2 367&Segments=1,11,16,438,1861,2032,2519,2554,2622, 2665&Targets=42,61,396,1708,1871,2336,2367,2439,24 73&Values=25,30,46,50,60,72,82,91,100,110,150,155, 202,305,341,473,565,730,751,830,872,933,949,951,95 9,960,961,962,980,994,996,997,1009&RawValues=GEOMA JORMETRO%2C%2CDOMAINTYPE%2C25%2CST_VERT_TOPIC%2Cbu siness_services__legal_services&Redirect=http%3a%2 f%2fwww.hp.com/sbso/solutions/legal/ad/tablet1100. html%3Fjumpid%3Dex_r295_link/kimsmbvertical/2Qlega l/default
Long url, eh? Doubleclick is one of the most comment advertising hosts, but you can block anything with "doubleclick" in the url by using this expression: http://*doubleclick* Voila. That blocks nearly all ads on the page.

So before you speak of adblocking features built into Firefox or available as addons, do a bit of research first, and don't discount Firefox simply because you're not experienced with it.

    http://firingsquad.com/hardware/budget_lcd_roundup _0405/page3.asp
It makes sense for DVI to be better. With DVI, images are inherently sharp because each pixel on the monitor reflects one pixel from the computer. In fact, there is no reason why non-DVI LCD panels should still exist since all LCD panels are inherently digital. An analog-only LCD panel actually requires additional circuitry to convert the information back to the digital format - with DVI, there's a direct connection. More importantly for you, there's no meaningful price difference. The cheapest 17" non-DVI monitor is $205 and the cheapest 17" DVI monitor is $220. If your budget is so tight that you cannot afford the $15 difference, you shouldn't be spending your money on computer equipment in the first place. If there's one absolute of buying an LCD monitor, it is to get a monitor with DVI support. As long as you stick with a DVI panel, your monitor will be sharp.

The difficultness is overstated, if you just RTFA. Really. I setup a Gentoo router over my week-day weekend (Tues-Thur). The hardest part was loading the correct driver for one of my NICs (I have two mobos, A7N8X-E Deluxe and A7N8X Deluxe (rev 2.0)). The problem with that was I was loading the right driver, but for the wrong mobo (was loading sk98lin which is for the A7N8X-E Deluxe instead of 3c59x for the A7N8X Deluxe). I spent 3 hours trying to figure out what I did wrong. After that, it's simply a matter of following the easy-to-read Gentoo handbook, sysadmin guides (which guided me through how to set up the actual router), and Gentoo wiki.

What helped me best in setting it up is after having sshd running so I could ssh into the server from my main PC. Have that running in putty on one side of the screen (or another screen if you have 2 monitors) and the handbook on the other, it was dead easy.
