"Where do microprocessors come from, Daddy?" That's an awkward question we all must answer at some stage in our careers. What mysterious process converts elemental silicon into elemental forces like Intel's Itanium or Motorola's PowerPC? Let us explore the wonder that is semiconductor creation.
Sounds like you haven't seen Minority Report. Now you too can be greated with a personalised message telling you exactly what you want to buy when you walk into a shop. You don't even have to choose!
You know what could happen? (Crazy conspiracy theory time!)
MS could release Longhorn and once everyone who would pay for an upgrade has done so, they could release XP for free to existing Win98/95 users. Make a special version which only works by upgrading existing 95/98 installs. Send 'em out. Surely by doing this they can morally drop 98 support like a dirty rag and claim everyone has no reason not to be running 2k or better (2k users not getting a free upgrade).
Stay with me now, this would stop lots of users considering a non-MS OS and also drop MS's support costs considerably. Now they only have to support 2k and better and they have also won a moral victory by giving their users a free upgrade. Let's see Linux compete with that! -- Seriously, in the 5 minutes I've been toying with this idea I don't see why this couldn't/wouldn't work for them...
Because of the absolutely phenomenal number of requests for this site (due to its being listed on Slashdot), we have had to take the unusual step of temporarily disabling the content of the site until things calm down:-) We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause.
It already is to a large extent. Example
Personally, my Thinkpad has everything working except:
Wireless Networking - Intel to release driver Q2 this year I believe
Modem - Never tried it
Power Management - Troulbe with suspend to RAM
Other than the above which I'm confidant will be worked out sooner rather than later it works fine with Linux (Gentoo to be specific).
I just had a look at some of the screenshots for Mepis. I gotta say that Xandros looks a lot more polished and for people switching from Windows (it's target audience I'm guessing) that's what they expect and need. N00bs need a bit of eye candy to make them feel at home sometimes;)
That said I haven't used either, only checked the screenshots but there you go. *grain of salt*
Ermmmm... Who exactly is bashing it?
From my view the posts above you are either praising it or asking legit questions like why can't you download the whole thing (followed by a reasonable answer, but then I have them sorted by score).
Maybe you should post this in reply to someone who is bashing it rather than starting a new comment all out of context?
Have to agree with your other points tho. Xandros is looking pretty swish. I'd like to see a review of some of the laptops that come with it preinstalled.
The National Health Service, Britain's biggest employer, is considering ditching Microsoft software after a row over mounting licensing costs.
What's the chance that MS will be offering them a heavily discounted plan after this.
I might be a little cynical but could it just be the NHS trying to get a better deal from MS?
Most (if not all waiting) are waiting for the parade not the movie. The premiere isn't something you wake up and decide to get some tickets for:P
Go you for getting it before everyone else tho.
Weather couldn't be nicer for those of us here in Welly.
I'm gonna go get me a good seat now, somewhere near the fellbeast on top of the Embassy Theatre.
And they do it by hacking with a Linux box so SCO decides to sue right back!
Good luck flying it back :D
I can see the US air authorities having no problems with a MiG-29 just popping up on the radar coming towards them

Shouldn't that include IBM?
It's not a version jump.
It's Winamp 2 + Winamp 3 = Winamp 5!
Crazy but true.

So hopefully it won't go to far before then

Novell brought Suse for $210Million.
That's a lot of upgrades!

some equipment on the ISS is only certified to operate above a certain air pressure.

It's been /.'d so here's a copy for everyone:

You should be able to turn the touchpad off in the BIOS. (Done it myself on my R40 so yours should be no different)

So soon you won't just be able to /. a site but a whole city if you play your cards right?

I just did. They said I'd have to buy a XP license and use that but I'd also have to supply my own DOS as they don't make it anymore :/
Intel are working on linux drivers. They estimate them to be out around the first 1/2 of 2004.
Yeah but 1999 of them were bug fixes for the previous versions ;)
Yeah but that's a dime a dozem compared to their cars. Porsche equivilent of a civic that can do 9 sec quater mile
