It's often commented that the additional steps required to execute a file on Linux would likely prevent a Linux virus from taking off in the way Windows viruses often do. However, if Linux is ever widely adopted on the desktop, given the proven stupidity of the majority of computer users, I wouldn't be too surprised to see that happen.

Although Patriot has plans to move forward with its 32-bit processors and application-specific integrated circuits, Wallin said that product revenues were currently "negligible."
"Our main focus is the IP [intellectual property] business now," he said.
Gee, this really reminds me of someone... can't think of the name...
Most of the replies on this page are saying to stay away from IT. I sort of expected that, but not quite to this degree, which leads me to ask -- what should I do? I'm in my third year of college (in Ohio) majoring in computer science. I chose the major because I really love working with computers, and I've certainly never had wild dreams of making millions of dollars overnight; however, I've been closely following the discussions on offshoring here on Slashdot for a while, and I'm wondering if I should switch to a different field while I can. I've had internships in the electrical utility field, so maybe there's something there. Anyway, I'd appreciate some advice from those of you in the business. Is there a decent future in IT for a current college student? If so, what would be a good area to specialize in?
Try to familiarize yourself with a variety of editors and game engines from the beginning. I had used only UnrealEd for several years, and when I finally tried the Quake 3 editor, everything felt so different that I gave up on it pretty quickly. Also, make sure you know how to do all that "advanced" stuff I never bothered to learn: make textures, write scripts, import 3D models from other programs like Maya, set up sounds, atmospheric effects like fog, etc.
And if you're new to the Unreal Editor, the Unrealed Reference is a great place to start.
"The message cannot be represented in 7-bit ASCII encoding and has been sent as a binary attachment."
Clever message, I must say - I'm sure this will catch a lot of people. The attachment name is "text.zip." Norton caught it immediately, even without the latest definitions, deleting the file "text.pif" from the zip file. They seem to have updated their virus definitions in the last few hours, by the way.
My late grandfather, my mother tells me, had the ability to lie down and go to sleep instantly, and wake up after a predetermined amount of time, like he had an internal alarm clock. I've heard of other people being able to do this too. I wonder if that is an ability that can be learned or if you're just born with it. Anyone know?
I'm listening to Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" on my Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers as I type this, and I highly recommend them. Two desktop speakers and a subwoofer; one of the two speakers has a headphones jack, auxiliary plug, main volume control and subwoofer level control. The system has loads of power but sounds great at low volume. It is THX certified. It's built pretty solidly - each desktop speaker is mounted on a metal stand and the subwoofer has a nice, heavy enclosure. Only downside I can see is the price, though it's come down a bit since I bought it. Specs are here.
She theorized that some of the people who cast nonvotes were among the county's true-blue Democrats who were appalled to find a ballot with only Republicans.
How hard is it to have "None of the above" as an option?
One thing that concerns me is that the judge will not know anything about source code or software development and will not be able to make a fair determination of what constitutes derivative works in this case. Please correct me if I am missing something.
"Dell Computers - PC Dreams" TV Commercial (May 2003)
One of the Dell Interns is repeatedly dropped through a trap door in a dream about how Dell computers are tested.
There's a joke waiting to be told, I just can't think of it.
The average idiot couldn't figure out how to use vi or tex. However, anyone and his dog can throw together a PowerPoint presentation. Stupid people will make stupid presentations using any medium they can figure out how to use. This includes certain computer science professors I've had.
I have some broken ones that are perfectly silent that I'd be delighted to sell you... and more on topic, I have a Mitsumi mouse that fell down a flight of stairs which still works fine but now clicks silently.

And, to complete the poem:
Roses are #FF0000
Violets are #0000FF
chown -R you ~/base
Not exactly front page material, if you ask me.

can you play Duck Hunt on it?
Would that include the free Solaris license you can get by downloading it from Sun, or just a license for SCO's own Unix?

That's a field where everyone says you're wrong about everything.

And even if you were interested, you probably still wouldn't read the article. This is Slashdot, after all.

Yeah, it's called the Ford Probe.
In hexadecimal, that's only 39784.
Maybe this version will make me popular with women.

Next question please.
Does anyone sell silent soundcards and speakers?

With it being a middle school, there could be kids there who are sex offenders, though I would expect that more from a high school.
Sorry if I made any incorrect assumptions about you. I really need to stop getting involved in these useless debates on Slashdot.
